Went to emergency dentist yesterday and I have an infection that's touching my nerve. I need a root canal which I will sort tomorrow. Antibiotics for now.

I'm taking ibuprofen and co codamol but they're not touching the sides, and they're the only painkillers I have. Any home remedies / old wives tales to ease my suffering?

Clove oil. Rub on the surrounding gum area.

Also swish salt water around your mouth, for around 30 seconds morning and night

FudgeBrownie2019 · 12/01/2020 19:40

Came on to say clove oil, too. It is miraculous.

Spoonsmum · 12/01/2020 19:47

Bread
I say this every time and people look at me like I’m mad but honestly. Put a bite of white bread on the tooth, slowly chew down keep biting down on it and then keep it there for a few minutes. Then repeat. Just keep it on the tooth. Takes a few mins to work. It took the edge off mine and was the only thing that did. I think I read it on here and I’m eternally grateful

newreality1 · 12/01/2020 19:50

I used (lots of) Orajel and Anbesol liquid over the tooth and gum. Also used Corsadyl mouthwash throughout the day.

newreality1 · 12/01/2020 19:52

*Corsodyl

I came on here to say clove oil too , it tastes rotten but does work , also the numbing sprays for sore throats works too

Davincitoad · 12/01/2020 19:59

If syndol is still around I found that a godsend for dental pain after a nasty wisdom tooth extraction

JorisBonson · 12/01/2020 20:07

Thanks all. Trip to the pharmacy / bakery tomorrow. I've taken a couple of sleeping tablets to try to get me to sleep and forget the pain.

Cheers @Lifecraft but not sure I'll be going down that road 😂

Warm salt water and keep rinsing for as long as you can...or Gin, lots of G+T!

AlmostAlwyn · 12/01/2020 20:26

Garlic! Crushed and put on with a cotton wool ball. It was the only thing that helped me get some sleep when I had bad toothache (impacted wisdom tooth needed removing) and paracetamol and ibuprofen did absolutely nothing!

BrokenWing · 12/01/2020 20:27

I had this recently and paracetamol, Ibruprofen, never touched it. Prescribed cocodamol (30/500) or slightly out of date tramadol took an edge off (I had these at home from previous pains) but still couldn't sleep with it. As soon as I laid down the pain increased so tried to sleep upright.

Anbesol liquid gave temporary relief but had to be reapplied every 30 mins-1hr or so. Anbesol gel and oragel were no use, think the liquid seeped in more to hit the spot. Clove oil, which I've used successfully in the past was no use.

Good news was the antibiotic worked quite quickly overnight

Dislocate your shoulder...you'll soon forget all about your toothache.

Might try this next time 🤣

Justonemoremojito · 12/01/2020 20:38

Just to say the dentist told me not to use any gel as if the gum is damaged it could end up causing more damage! I used ibuprofen & antibiotics it's horrible

JorisBonson · 12/01/2020 20:45

It really is, I've had root canal before but didn't feel this bad before, the pain is intense and it's making me feel knackered. I've recently moved and have no dentist, the NHS ones near me can't see me til February so I'm going to have to look further afield / rob a bank and go private

OP posts:
BrokenWing · 13/01/2020 05:59

How far have you moved? Can you go back to your old dentist?

Macake · 13/01/2020 06:05

Clove oil only thing that worked for me

sandgrown · 13/01/2020 06:10

Regular warm salt water mouth washes. I teaspoon of salt to a pint of boiled water . Let it cool a bit then swish round your mouth. Don't rinse out. It helps to kill infection.Hope you feel better soon x

lostsoulsunited · 13/01/2020 06:39

Clove oil but don't get it on your tongue

neverhadanymarblestolose · 13/01/2020 08:14

If it's not too far, I'd go back to your old dentist to sort it out quicker and cheaper than going private.

CarolinaPink · 13/01/2020 08:31

Oil of cloves. Get from chemist. Pour into saucer and dab on the site bit with soaked cotton wool bud. Worked like magic for me. Good luck Thanks

k1233 · 13/01/2020 09:40

If you don't have clove oil, you can tuck a whole clove or two between your cheek and gum. Works well IME

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 13/01/2020 10:02

Toothache is miserable, really feel for you. I had 2 teeth out last year and developed dry socket - the only thing that provided relief was a mouthful of vodka. Keep it in your mouth as long as you can and spit. Really good numbing effect.

Itsnotalwaysme · 13/01/2020 10:34

All that worked for me before was freezing cold water swirled around my mouth. It hurt like hell then stopped hurting completely. Didn't last long but i just kept doing it till dentist

easyandy101 · 13/01/2020 10:42

Is the nerve exposed?

If so packing it will help
