Dd, 3 years old, was invited to a birthday party by a girl from nusery. All fine, responded she would like to come, asked for wishes and went with dd to get a gift from list. Thought I had frozen gift wrapping paper at home. Wanted to wrap this morning before party at 10am to realise that the only wrapping paper we had was Christmas inspired green with gold trees on so ofc wrapped the gift in that paper and took dd to party..
All went fine at the party, the birthday gift liked the gift and party was nice.
But just received a txt from the birthday girls mom where she is moaning about the paper and accusing me of regifting a Christmas gift that I clearly didn't even bother to rewrap.
I'm a bit gobsmacked by the txt.. I have a recipe that proves I bought it last weekend, but I really didnt anybody would care that much about the look of the wrapping paper?
AIBU?

As to what to do.

You could come out bitchy and tell everyone else at nursery what she's said.
You could tell her she's welcome to the receipt if the gift isn't up to her standards. That would throw a gauntlet down.
Definitely don't return an invite. No doubt she'd be disappointed in anything but a party bag from Tiffanys for her little darling anyway!

GooodMythicalMorning · 12/01/2020 15:57

They get what I've got! I wouldn't mind the paper at all. Yeah send the receipt but only to prove u bought it for her.

Luxplus · 12/01/2020 15:58

@SanAntonio why would I lie? Gift lists are quite the norm, and I dont mind at all.

I did apologise for the paper when giving the gift but it was the dad who managed gift table and he didn't mind.
I've sent her txt asking if she wants the receipt but not apologies for the paper

I am fucking gobsmacked that she texted you. What an entitled idiot. When you bought a present?? Pay it no mind at all.

Inmydaywe · 12/01/2020 16:03

"sorry your daughter didn't like her present. My daughter picked out last week. Luckily I still have the receipt. Would you like it so you can exchange it at your convenience?"

Aaaaand, who has a birthday party at 10am on a Sunday morning. Already very U.

Herts6789 · 12/01/2020 16:03

I thought this was going to be about 'boy' and 'girl' wrapping paper at the start or something like that. I really don't think it matters however, I have a birthday very close to Christmas and I often get Birthday presents wrapped in christmas paper and maybe it's stupid but its nice when people make the effort to give me birthday paper for my birthday.

That said, i'm a grown up, it really doesn't matter and i'm sure a three year old gives even less of a damn!

YANBU

DickDewy · 12/01/2020 16:05

You mean motif.

Of course you don't use Christmas paper for a birthday present but how rude to text.

SanAntonio · 12/01/2020 16:06

Gift lists are quite the norm, and I dont mind at all.

it was the dad who managed gift table

Where do you live? Both are totally weird . Managed the gift table? FFS

Mammyloveswine · 12/01/2020 16:07

How rude!! We got presents in Christmas paper last week, and some in unicorn paper and some just in tissue paper!

My 4 and 2 year olds didn't care!

Lllot5 · 12/01/2020 16:07

I’d message her saying you have the receipt if she wants to see it.
10am party, gift list, dad’managing’ gift table, stroppy texts. You’re better off out of it.
CF though.
One little word though my dgd has a birthday in January and we do try to separate it from Christmas as much as possible. So she was probably a bit miffed but shouldn’t have said anything.

ChilliandLemon · 12/01/2020 16:07

Gifts aren’t the norm where I live.

Jesus Christ she is a cheeky cow. I am gobsmacked that she text you.

SanAntonio · 12/01/2020 16:10

@SanAntonio Denmark

Then that would make sense and I apologise.

Luxplus · 12/01/2020 16:17

@SanAntonio thank you. I should perhaps have put it in my post Smile

There are a couple of children in our family and friendship circle who have late December and early January birthdays - I always make the point of ensuring that their wrapping paper is very clearly birthday paper as frankly they get a lot of stuff wrapped in left over xmas paper, 'joint' Xmas/Bday presents and their birthdays forgotten entirely by lots of family and friends. Their DP's have said on several occasions how much it means when people make the effort with little things like paper rather than it seeming like an afterthought but dont call those who dont out on it IYSWIM. You used the paper you had and the DM was rude for making a big deal our of it to you but it is probably a bit of a touchy subject for her as I bet it happens a lot. Slightly bonkers of her to think it's a re-gift though!

MonsterRehab23 · 12/01/2020 16:24

Nah YANBU. Can’t believe the cheek of her. I have a child born a week before XMas. I sometimes use Xmas wrapping paper for his birthday presents- he doesn’t care what is gifts are wrapped in. It doesn’t seem like her child did either

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 12/01/2020 16:25

You're both in the wrong.

Luxplus · 12/01/2020 16:29

So I think the mom might have sent the txt to others bc I just got a txt from another mom from nusery that birthday mom hace written to her to complain about the value of the gift she got the birthday girl Blush

OP posts:
Luxplus · 12/01/2020 16:31

Or what she wrote was she thought money must be missing from the card to accompany the small gift.

Text back the picture of the receipt and say you are not purchasing new wrapping paper until you use up existing stock because you are saving the planet. And don’t speak to her again. I wouldn’t even notice such a detail, let alone send a message about it, it is off the scale rude of here.

74NewStreet · 12/01/2020 16:32

She seriously sent you a message “accusing” you of regifting? Hmm. Hard to believe anyone is that short on social skills.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/01/2020 16:32

I rarely have appropriate birthday paper in. I buy it but then DP uses it for his GC and doesn't replace it. One friend's son had had presents wrapped in Xmas paper and rather girly paper - I apologize each time but his mum just laughs.

I don't think YWBU, especially at you pointed out our to the far at the time.

Branster · 12/01/2020 16:34

And sending a gift list for a 3year old is beyond belief as well. Unless you specifically asked for suggestions in which case she could have given you a couple of suggestions not a list.
