To ask for tips to get up earlier in the morning?

I find that I ignore my alarm and fall back asleep, then spend the rest of the day feeling annoyed with myself for waking up late.
Any tips? What time do you get up at?

I find going to bed early enough that I've had enough sleep is really key to getting up not being so painful.

Mainly it's a bit crap, but I hit my alarm and up I get, because it won't be better after I've snoozed my alarm. I also tend to set my alarm to latest time I can risk without being late, so there's no time to snooze it. All snoozing does is mean you have an extra 20 minutes or whatever of interrupted sleep instead of high quality uninterrupted sleep.

If I'm really tired I can't resist the temptation to snooze. So then I have to make a real effort, catch up on sleep properly even if that means going to bed at 8:30 and then everything else is better.

ImGoingSlightlyBrad · 11/01/2020 22:09

Get a dog and train it to understand that alarm = walkies. It won't let you fall back to sleep Smile

Alternatively, get your main bedroom light under remote control (eg Philips Hue) and make sure it has a harsh bright light.

Keep the remote next to the alarm.

Alarm goes off, you switch it off and switch the light on. The brightness will force you awake.

Go to bed earlier.

BertieBotts · 11/01/2020 22:11

Speakout it's immaterial at the moment because I'm up half the night dealing with a toddler who has never slept much more than 2-3 hours in a row, so am pretty exhausted and sometimes go to bed at about 7, but generally about 11pm. And I don't have problems falling asleep. Ideally I would go to bed around 2/3am but that isn't sustainable. It's like my body just wants to be in a slightly different time zone. I do better in the winter, even though the mornings are colder. When the clocks go forward I struggle with the extra hour I feel I am "out" by.

I do have ADHD and I am better when I am on my medication - I actually get tired by around 10.30 rather than feeling awake until the middle of the night (unless I make myself go to bed). I also have to have a little bedtime routine Blush I think it helps my body understand it's time to sleep.

Which on that note I should get going. I'm an hour ahead of the UK due to where I live.

ultrablue · 11/01/2020 22:11

Man I'm so jealous of you lot, I start work at 6am so have to leave the house at 5.30am.. it never gets easier as a lot of the time "we" (my collegues) don't sleep well as we are scared of oversleeping.

I set my alarm early and snooze it for 45 mins at the moment, then get up. Go to the bathroom and sit in there trying to come round for ten minutes

I really want to get up earlier so I have time to actually do normal things like enjoy a coffee watching the world go by so going to try some of these tips. I like the idea of using my "snooze" time to go for a run x

annualleavepurchase · 11/01/2020 22:12

@Meggymoo777 I have that too. Love the sunset option, it stops me fiddling on my phone in bed. I find that my 3yo often wakes me before the sunrise does but I still like the light in the morning.

BertieBotts · 11/01/2020 22:15

Teething toddlers aside - I have tried having my "bedtime" as earlier than 11 before and it feels like I'm trying to go to bed in the middle of the afternoon! As well as not being enough time to actually do anything to relax in the evening, which is important to me.

OldTownRoadHome · 11/01/2020 22:17

I want a Lumie now but they are £170 Shock

howdoesthisworkagain · 11/01/2020 22:17

I use Alarmy, its an app where you set it so you have to get up a take a photograph of something in your home to turn it off. Its great Grin. Currently I have to photograph the kettle, which then leads me to make a drink and bingo.

I also have a bedtime alarm- it literally just went off to remind me to stop faffing and go to bed - again where I physically have to go and take a photo.

It also has maths problems you have to solve etc.

InsertFunnyUsername · 11/01/2020 22:19

Following for ideas. It should be as simple as getting up with your alarm but I fail at that simple task. Doesn't help my toddler sleeps until 8.30 9 most days so I know i can get an extra, say 2 hours sleep! Also I'm deaf in one ear so when I tried to put my phone in the hallway, I slept through it Blush

annualleavepurchase · 11/01/2020 22:20

@ultrablue what time do you go to bed? Try a lumie body clock 150 to 'reset' your day until you're going to sleep at 8.30 and getting up at 4.30.
Move your bedtime forward by 10-30 minutes each day and use the sunset option to help you get to sleep then sunrise option for the dark mornings. By snoozing for 45 miniutes you're essentially losing that sleep.
It must be so hard getting up at that time though.

Bipbipbipbip · 11/01/2020 22:22

I find the toddler "alarm" pretty effective though he does have the annoying habit of sleeping late on the day that you need to be out early.

I used to be up at 5.45 for work and the only thing that did it was an early night and forcing myself out of bed every day through bribery - if you get up after the count of ten you can have a latte from the cafe!

annualleavepurchase · 11/01/2020 22:22

@OldTownRoadHome the one I have is currently for sale for £80 on amazon

Ironmanrocks · 11/01/2020 22:24

I have been struggling with my sleep - and then obviously I struggle to get up. I cannot bear the apps that monitor your sleep - they seem to wake me an hour to 90 minutes earlier than my alarm is set which is really upsetting! I have started to use a thing on my iPhone which is free. I think it's the 'bedtime' function. Basically it reminds me to go to bed (don't always follow this) but the alarm in the morning is so gentle....it starts like a tiny tinkling and over several minutes builds up to a proper sound. I feel like I am not abruptly awoken which I hate. It is a gentle sound which you hear but don't wake up immediately. It has made my mornings so much more pleasant. Also the lovely coffee waiting downstairs. x

Livpool · 11/01/2020 22:34

I get up at 6 during the week and am not a natural early bird.

I need a routine - and am in by 10. I eat by 6 and do nothing after 7. My DH sets the alarm though, as I have been known to wake up, turn the alarm off and go back to sleep

KatherineJaneway · 11/01/2020 22:53

Oh, and get a cat. They wake you up early.

TheSubtleArt · 11/01/2020 22:55

Look on amazon for the best rated thermos flask, (12 hour ones) make yourself your favourite hot beverage before bed and give yourself five minutes drinking it in bed in the morning in comfort- obviously caffeinated drinks will help you get up too!

Glitteryone · 11/01/2020 23:02

The only thing that works for me is putting my phone at the other end of the room and jumping out of bed the second my alarm goes off.

My dressing gown is beside my alarm and I put it straight on which helps ease the sudden move from bed.

My bladder usually gets me up so I'd say drink plenty 😂

FusionChefGeoff · 11/01/2020 23:33

Get a teasmaid. Yes, they still exist and I love mine more than DH and both DC Grin

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 12/01/2020 07:13

Get a 5 year old and or a dog.

Retroflex · 12/01/2020 07:33

Yet again I've had no sleep at all, so insomnia guarantees that you're up early in the morning... Hmm

wheresmymojo · 12/01/2020 10:21

If anyone has smart lights/bulbs you can set up routines that do the same thing as Lumie

This is the Philips Hue app - we have a Hue bulb in the bedroom lamp.
