To ask for tips to get up earlier in the morning?

I find that I ignore my alarm and fall back asleep, then spend the rest of the day feeling annoyed with myself for waking up late.
Any tips? What time do you get up at?

I'd second the sleep monitoring apps that wake you when you're in a light sleep part of your sleep cycle.

I also have an alarm in the bathroom. By the time I've got there to switch it off, I may as well go to the toilet and brush my teeth to start feeling alive again.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 11/01/2020 21:19

Set one alarm for 30-40 minutes earlier than your actual alarm , switch that off and go back to sleep then when your proper alarm goes off you’ve had your lie in already

DH does this. If we ever get divorced this will be why.

Oysterbabe · 11/01/2020 21:19

Do you need to get up by a specific time? If not then don't worry about it. If you do then you can borrow my adorable 2 year old.

NewName54321 · 11/01/2020 21:19

Longer term, if you hate getting up because you hate your job make this the year you do something about it.

StudentMummy92 · 11/01/2020 21:19

I do the same as @Floralnomad

SanFrancisco49er · 11/01/2020 21:20

Natural light. Even if its dark. I always open the curtains before anything else and look outside, really works.
Also, however much i want to stay in bed i always think what ill be doing in an hour or two and that I won't even be thinking about bed by that point! Makes leaving the bed a lot easier.

bumblingbovine49 · 11/01/2020 21:23

I have tried all these.I have been known to get up, cross the room, turn the alarm off, go to the loo, shower and then get back into bed, particularly if I have managed to get up earlier than usual and having showered am ahead of myself. Blush

It is a regular occurrence that I get up , go to the loo, brush my teeth and get back into bed again. My years with a very early waking child were torture for me in the mornings ( thankfully over now DS is 15).

StudentMummy92 · 11/01/2020 21:24

@BiscuitBarrels aren't you a delight Hmm

Jomarchsburntskirt · 11/01/2020 21:29

Get your lazy arse out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off 😜

Dawlish · 11/01/2020 21:34

I'm doing Dry January and my sleep quality is vastly improved, and I get out of bed in the mornings no problem. So maybe cut out alcohol, if you do drink, on the evenings when you need to sleep well.

elpth · 11/01/2020 21:43

I've tried most of these methods over the years and always been terrible at mornings. But last Christmas I gave DH a Lumie daylight alarm clock and it is totally life changing. I actually feel properly refreshed and awake now whatever time it wakes us up. They're SO worth getting.

PretendNothing · 11/01/2020 21:44

I used an alarm app which you could set to only stop sounding once you'd taken a photo of a preset object. I used my kettle, so I had to get up, go to the kitchen and take a photo of the kettle to turn the alarm off. Once I was there it made sense to make myself a coffee, by which time I was awake. I think it was called Alarmy? You must remember to turn it off in advance if you're going to stay somewhere else though!

speakout · 11/01/2020 21:47

Early nights.

No other sensible answer.
I am up always by 6.30am. even on a Sunday. I love early mornings.

But asleep no later than 10.30pm, often by 9.30.

Alpacathebag · 11/01/2020 21:50

I have a timer on the bed side lamp so that it comes on half an hour before my alarm goes off so I’m not trying to wake up in the dark. It’s my cheap version of one of those lumie sunrise lamps. I think the light readjusts me in to a lighter sleep which makes it better waking up.

Then I have a smart alarm on my Fitbit that is set for 7am but if it thinks I’m in a light sleep will wake me up within the 30 mins before the 7am alarm. As back up I have a normal alarm clock set for 7.10am.

BertieBotts · 11/01/2020 21:52

I use an app called Alarmy. You can't turn it off until you scan a barcode, so I set it up to my toothpaste and that forces me to go into the bathroom. When I'm in the bathroom, I think oh I might as well do a wee and brush my teeth while I'm here, and by the time I've done that, I'm awake enough to have the discipline not to just crawl back into bed!

I do allow myself 2x 10 minute snoozes. DH doesn't mind :o He also snoozes his alarm the first time or two.

Also I love coffee, so having the means to make really nice coffee is a nice motivator to get up in the mornings. Get something for breakfast that you really look forward to.

I am not a morning person at all.

TheTruthAboutLove · 11/01/2020 21:54

We had a sleep specialist in at work and she was giving tips in regards to sleeping and how to wake up and be productive.

She said, keep a glass of water by your bedside and the second you wake up, before stretching or looking at your phone - to have a sip of water. Apparently it does something and wakes you up. I have to say it works for me!

BertieBotts · 11/01/2020 21:56

Oh, also, one thing I hate about mornings is getting out of the nice warm duvet into the cold - so several pairs of warm fluffy socks/flexible slip on slipper things and a warm fluffy dressing gown (or preferably two so one can be in the wash) is a must for me. I can immediately wrap myself in my warm cosy things and it doesn't feel as awful leaving the duvet.

Alpacathebag · 11/01/2020 21:57

Also don’t have a phone or iPad in the bedroom, it removes that temptation to scroll through social media or the news for “just five minutes” which turn into ages sat in bed and not having the blue light just before bed will help you sleep too.

JuniperBeer · 11/01/2020 21:58

Get the sleep cycle app. It will wake you up at your lightest point of your sleep cycle. So instead of you feeling bleary eyed at 6.15, it might go off at 6.05 but you'll feel more awake!
It's brilliant

Get up immediately, no snoozing

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 11/01/2020 21:58

Go to sleep earlier. To aid this do not use any blue light devices (phones, tablets etc) in the evening, TV is fine. Have a hot bath before you go to bed as it lowers your core temperature which aids sleep. Dim lights of an evening, read a book.

BertieBotts · 11/01/2020 21:58

Lastly, I've found I can't get up before 8 and feel rested. That seems to be the earliest wake up time which works for me. That's too late for most jobs, and German schools, unfortunately. Pesky kids... But finding this natural time is useful as you can use it for weekends and if possible/practical, actually work your working life around it too.

speakout · 11/01/2020 22:00

Lastly, I've found I can't get up before 8 and feel rested.

What time do you go to sleep though?
