To ask for tips to get up earlier in the morning?

I find that I ignore my alarm and fall back asleep, then spend the rest of the day feeling annoyed with myself for waking up late.
Any tips? What time do you get up at?

Set one alarm for 30-40 minutes earlier than your actual alarm , switch that off and go back to sleep then when your proper alarm goes off you’ve had your lie in already - works for me and I’m not a morning person at all

I second this!

1066vegan · 11/01/2020 20:12

You could do what my dp did and use an alarm on your phone that sounds like a homicidal cockerel bellowing in your ear. I defy anyone to sleep through that. It had me leaping out of bed in a panic at 4 in the morning last week. 😕

Jellybeansincognito · 11/01/2020 20:14

get one of those alarms that move around so you have to get up to turn it off.

Jellybeansincognito · 11/01/2020 20:14

Plan a nice breakfast so you have something to look forward to/ to entice you out of bef

DameofGnomes · 11/01/2020 20:22

Take some snuff. The sneeze will wake you up immediately. Worked for me.

redbullgivesyouflings · 11/01/2020 20:40

DP is not a morning person at all, and what he does is set alarms for 7, 7:02, 7:04,...,7:10, with the one at 7 being a gentle ring and the one at 7:10 being loud enough it makes you wonder if the speakers on his phone are going to explode any time soon.

ruthieness · 11/01/2020 20:43

Drink more water at bedtime to create a pressing need to get up in the morning!

Brefugee · 11/01/2020 20:44

Force yourself up. The first 5 minutes are the worst. After that, well ...you're up.

Ilovelblue · 11/01/2020 20:44

My clock alarm would go off about 10 mins in advance of the alarm on my mobile. The phone was always placed just slightly out of reach which meant I had to get up to turn it off.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/01/2020 20:51

I have an alarm on my Fitbit that vibrates, phone alarm goes off five minutes later. Our cat also tends to come and sit on me and boop me in the face, because she gets her breakfast once I’m out of the shower.

Per pp, I HAVE to get up immediately, or I would fall asleep again. My DP can snooze until the last possible minute, but I need time to get myself going more than an extra half hour in bed.

Dutch1e · 11/01/2020 20:53

I love the sleep app that monitors my snoring movements and figures out when I'm in a light stage of sleep to wake me. It's truly a game-changer, being pulled out of dream-state by an alarm leaves me groggy and exhausted all day.

RidgedPerfection · 11/01/2020 20:57

I force myself to get up immediately and do something - I get up from 0400 - 0430 before work every day to go for a run; all kit ready and everything ready for work the night before and a reason to get up. I just get up straight away and keep myself moving...run - coffee - shower - work so that I have no time to give in to being so tired!!

Di11y · 11/01/2020 20:58

go to bed earlier. if you're well rested it'll be easier.

TomatoSoupWithCheeseOnTop · 11/01/2020 21:00

You do not need anything but a change of mindset. Seriously.

I spoke to a "lark" friend of mine, jealous of their ability to get up early in the morning, compared to my hatred of getting up.

He said something which blew my mind and has changed my ability to get up. Which is:

"It doesn't matter what time you get up - whether it is the first alarm at 5.30am or after the 17th snooze button - those first few moments are always just shit. Expensive bird song alarm, across the room, the radio, whatever..the first few minutes are awful. You just need to stand up, go for a wee and generally by the time you start brushing your teeth then actually you feel OK."

So just get up. It is shit. But 3 snoozes later isn't any better. Just get up and remember that as soon as you have had a wee you will feel more alive.

It has been a total game change for me. Getting up is still shit - but it is easier/better if you like because I know the "awful" won't last.

c75kp0r · 11/01/2020 21:03

if you can afford to have the heating on early enough that the room is warm before you get up, there is less temptation to dive back under the warm duvet. or have warm dressing gown ready to put on straightaway

thunderthighsohwoe · 11/01/2020 21:04

Borrow a toddler for a few weeks. You’ll lose the ability to lie in bed fairly swiftly, and it’ll be permanent.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/01/2020 21:04

I loathe and despise mornings and all their evil work.

But I have a filter coffee machine with a timer. Knowing that if I get up, there will be freshly brewed coffee waiting for me, helps a lot!

ChilliMayo · 11/01/2020 21:07

I have my alarm on the windowsill, about seven paces from my bed.
When it goes off, I get up to turn it off with every intention of getting straight back into bed.
By the time I'm actually there and switch it off, I've woken enough to realise that I am a grown up and have to get up.

Fizzypoo · 11/01/2020 21:08

My fitbit alarm is ser for 6.45 but it has an option that wakes me up when my sleep cycle is lightest it usually vibrates around 6 30. I still don't get up, I'd rather lie in bed. I'm much better in summer.

Duckduckduck123 · 11/01/2020 21:08

@wombatstewfortea where do you get one of them?

covetingthepreciousthings · 11/01/2020 21:08

Set one alarm for 30-40 minutes earlier than your actual alarm , switch that off and go back to sleep then when your proper alarm goes off you’ve had your lie in already

I do this, and it drives my Dh insane, he hates it and can't understand it, but I like feeling like I've got a lie in. Grin

AriadnesFilament · 11/01/2020 21:08

Go to bed earlier, get out of bed when the alarm goes off.
It’s not rocket science.

BeccaG123 · 11/01/2020 21:10

Thanks everyone for your tips so far! Setting my alarm for 6:15 tomorrow and going to be using several of your tips!

@Duckduckduck123
I use a phone app called 'Alarm Clock Xtreme' but there's quite a few out there

DameFanny · 11/01/2020 21:16

Coffee machine in the bedroom with an inbuilt timer. Not that I have trouble waking these days, but I do have trouble moving and hot coffee first thing really helps.
