I’ll give you a pass for off white.

Please someone tell me they also remember when the woman posted her roast dinner on a clear see through plate? #wistful

Plates can be any colour or shape that a person wants.

mbosnz · 12/01/2020 19:56

I have white, very pale green, almost duck egg blue, and also a fabulous set of deep blue bowls that really make Asian food pop.

Straycatstrut · 12/01/2020 20:02

I like red plates.

NemophilistRebel · 12/01/2020 20:04

Some of the most fantastic restaurants I’ve had have had gorgeous coloured plates

AlCalavicci · 12/01/2020 20:05

@Soconfusedandlost
I have brown / amber glass set plates sauces , side plates and the set did have cups too but they were tiny and got broke .
I use the plates daily .

They were bought by my DM/DD probably in the late 70s/ early 80s , well before most people had microwaves and dish washers yet they can go in with no problems at all . unlike the expensive plates I bought a few years ago which create a very alarming light show cos I did not realise the silver pattern is metal Hmm

bananasplitsallround · 12/01/2020 20:10

It might depend on the food being served but most food looks unappealing on anything other than white.

glassplates · 12/01/2020 20:16

@Plugitinthen

Are orange glass plates acceptable ?

Royal Doulton Sherbrooke - there's plenty of white but imo the blue edge takes it to a different level.

I've been able to find replacements for my chipped and broken Blue Willow wedding china - it's a classic pattern and mixing different versions works very well.

Pawsandnoses · 12/01/2020 21:05

Mine are grey, hideous and really heavy. My DH purchased them from Next (can't stand the place) therefore in his eyes they're perfectly acceptable. I was secretly really happy when the first set arrived smashed, but they sent another 😤. The delivery company must have being playing football with them, because as much as I try, the damned things refuse to be accidentally broken!!

jillybeanclevertips · 12/01/2020 21:08

Only white ? How boring.
Would be OK for anyone with OCD I guess. But then it gets messed up with different coloured food- or just rice with a slice of white bread.

Catsinthecupboard · 12/01/2020 21:44

I have several sets (mostly charity shop, partial sets)bc I did not have a fancy wedding and nobody helped us purchase a set in our beginning.

DD usually sets big family dinners. Nobody minds if we mix and match or use the only set that I purchased new with a gold border. Mostly, everyone is happy with good food and good company.

I did purchase antique serving sets that compliment either warm weather holidays or winter dinners bc I was tired of searching for things that match.

Don't be judgey; enjoy the meal.

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 12/01/2020 21:49

I like white but I do have square plates. And some square “serving” bowls, it not bowls to eat from. I’ve got some white round plates but they are very big for everyday. Pasta bowls are off white, and I have some dark blue cereal bowls (I don’t think cereal bowls have to be white). Mugs are all kinds of colours.

Beamur · 12/01/2020 21:50

So so so bored of plain.
Have recently replaced my dull towels with lots of patterned coloured ones. Doing same gradually with bedding too.
My plates are a mix of white and blue and white.
Not much matches in my house.

caringcarer · 12/01/2020 22:01

You made me smile at the memory The glass you described was called Arcopol.
I had desert bowls and casserole dishes in it a fluted pie dish and a milk and sugar bowl!
It is a French version of Pyrex and scratched like mad.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 12/01/2020 22:21

We have 2x white on top red underneath (tesco), 2x white on top blue underneath (tesco), 2x blue with white polka dots (whittards courtesy of MIL), 1x huge white, 1x willow pattern & 1x beige with brown speckles (no idea where the latter 3 came from).

The beige one with speckles is detested by DH & DS, they refer to it as "the oatmeal plate" with disdainful looks. DD prefers the oatmeal plate and will request it for dinner if its available. I have no preference but I like the huge white one to be in use or in the dishwasher if possible because the cupboard doesn't shut properly if its in there.

Tattygran14 · 12/01/2020 22:44

I really like the plates in Wetherspoons.

Cherrysoup · 12/01/2020 22:52

Whittard spinwash, so pretty. I’m afraid most of mine have fallen foul to dc/my clumsiness over the years. Now we have TJ Hughes orange flowers and Asda white with a red ring round the edge. Strictly round. Square is so wrong.

3littlerabbits · 12/01/2020 23:14

Love this thread. My dinner plates are white with small pattern on the rim. Side plates are where I let loose on the mismatched patterns and colours. They all make me happy.

DustyMaiden · 12/01/2020 23:21

Everyday plates white, occasion plates white with a silver edge. Only drink from white cups.

Queenofeverything44 · 12/01/2020 23:41

I have light grey.. I'm not a restaurant 😂. Tbh I do hate square those wierd oval ones and anything with zigzags or black..

GirlDownUnder my mum has those white ones with blue splotches; I really like them!

I We couldn’t decide on which pattern we liked best so got all of them and now test chaos theory every day by seeing if we end up with a mug and plate that match Grin

Hotwaterbottle01 · 13/01/2020 01:50

White or white with a delicate pattern on the outside but I don’t like it where the food goes. Eating from a red plate would make me sick I just couldn’t 🤢🤢🤢

Oldishusernewname · 13/01/2020 02:24

This thread has brought back some memories!

I'm not matchy matchy as I've always been a bit too poor to bother about such things, run through a few Argos-type sets over the years when the children were small but nothing really lasted. I was given a big box of crockery when my lovely Nana died a decade ago and just get the most wonderful joy from using them everyday. Nothing fancy, lots of random blue willow pattern stuff and some BRILLIANT Pyrex Chelsea steak plates which we use for most meals (they are sturdy and massive and we are greedy Grin )

It's so comforting to suddenly remember that the plate in my hand was held and used by my Nana hundreds/thousands of times! All bog standard crockery to anyone else but full of memories and love for me. I've made myself snivel a bit now like a big idiot!
