To think that actually most adults need more than the recommended 7-8 hours sleep a night?

I can cope fairly well on minimal sleep, having 3 no sleeping kids helped with that. But I tend to find if I can get 9-10 hours that's when I'm best refreshed.

I know advice is 7-8 hours for adults (and that lie ins are not recommended, that's it better to keep the exact same bedtimes & waking times), but I also know 7 hours just feels like I've not slept enough.

My children all live happily and energetically on around 5 hours a night. They're 10, 8 & 7.

So, who are these adults that are full of beans on 7-8 hours?

I need more to feel decent.

I think it varies a lot between different people tbh. That's an average but some prob need more some less.

Arrowfanatic · 10/01/2020 22:20

I should point out my kids go to bed at reasonable times, just take ages to fall asleep & are up between 4 & 5am despite much begging from me not to. They just have never seemed to need sleep.

I have heard you need less sleep as you get older, not sure if that's true.

FrogsFrogs · 10/01/2020 22:21

One of my kids needs a lot more sleep than the other. One gets 7 hours the other needs 8 or 9.

Sparklesocks · 10/01/2020 22:21

I think it’s a very individual thing and varies. Some people are great on 6, others 7-8, and then others 9+ hours.

SnorkMaiden81 · 10/01/2020 22:23

I need so much sleep I find being awake inconvenient.

Arrowfanatic · 10/01/2020 22:23

My sil lived with us for a while & once slept for 48 hours straight, I was ShockHmm

I definitely need at least 8, preferably 9 or 10. Always have. I really struggle with less.

Coldilox · 10/01/2020 22:25

I average 5 hours. Less on a bad night. Maybe 6 on a good night.

I’m always tired. I work shifts so can’t have a healthy sleep routine, I struggle to get to sleep as I find it hard to switch my brain off, i often wake up in the night. I have to get up at 5:30 if I’m on an early shift. If I’m not my 5 year old usually wakes me at 6.

I would love 7-8 hours a night.

MrsJBaptiste · 10/01/2020 22:26

7-8 hours sleep a night is loads! If i had that, I'd be flying the next day.

As it is, I go to bed too and late and get up too early so often have around 6.5 hours of (broken) sleep a night. However it's my own fault, I like reading before bed and going to the gym before work so I'll put up with it!

FruityWidow · 10/01/2020 22:26

I feel groggy and totally unproductive if I have more than 8 hrs sleep.

Fruityb · 10/01/2020 22:26

I usually get just shy of 7 according to my Fitbit. My sleep is good quality but not long enough. At a weekend I might get nearer 8 if my son sleeps in a bit. I manage but I do end up in bed by 10 ish. One night a week I usually have a wee nap in the evenings. I crave the days of 9-10 hours!!

Goawayquickly · 10/01/2020 22:26

I get 5 or 6 these days and its fine but one time I slept 9 hours and felt brand new when I woke up.

doadeer · 10/01/2020 22:27

No I would feel really groggy and heavy headed after 10 hours. I think 7-8 hours is good for me. I have an insomniac baby so I haven't had that in over a year mind!

DH only sleeps 4-5 hours a night. He says he has always been like that

Mistymonday · 10/01/2020 22:27

9 hours for me is ideal but 7-8 Hrs is really a minimum. I don’t have kids though! Wink

ToLiveInPeace · 10/01/2020 22:27

I can't sleep more than six hours most nights, often less. My mind wakes my body far too early to fret about shit that doesn't matter. I'd bloody love ten hours sleep at once.

Snowmonster · 10/01/2020 22:29

Throughout my adult life I have had long periods of time when I don't need more than 5 hours sleep (and this is broken) a night. I am currently having a bout of insomnia which has lasted 6 weeks where I go to bed around 12 , wake up 2 or 3 times and get up at 5.15 (no alarm, just wake up buzzing and full of beans).
I work, do a uni degree and have kids so it may be just the way my body copes when there aren't enough hours in the day!
If I sleep 8 hours I end up feeling like crap with a raging headache.

VestaTilley · 10/01/2020 22:30

Definitely - I always feel better after more like 9/10 years.

ActualHornist · 10/01/2020 22:31

I feel best on 9-10 hours of sleep. I could easily get that if I went to bed as I don’t have to get up early, but I have major FOMO if I go to bed before midnight!

VestaTilley · 10/01/2020 22:31

*hours!! Not years! Not sleeping beauty...

WorraLiberty · 10/01/2020 22:31

I need 6 and I'm good to go.

alibongo5 · 10/01/2020 22:32

I usually have about 6 1/2 to 7 hours sleep. I am often surprised when people say they go to bed at 10 or earlier - I usually go to bed at 12 ish if I'm working the next day, wake up at 6.30 and doze for a while before getting up.

I like a lie in at the weekend but not because I'm tired, I just like lying in bed snuggling, listening to the radio and reading before getting up.

greathat · 10/01/2020 22:33

If I was to sleep until I naturally woke I'd have about 10 hours. I feel so much better and happier if I get that much. When working I fit in 7-8 and I feel shit

clevername · 10/01/2020 22:33

I had a monster lie in over Christmas (until about 1pm!) and when I woke up I felt like a new woman. Honestly, I felt awesome. I was sashaying around the house in my new Christmas PJs all afternoon (there didn't seem much point in getting dressed), all serene and calm and well-rested. It was like my batteries had been fully charged for the first time in ages.

So, yeah... I think I need more sleep than 8 hours a night. Or, at least, I need a lie in like that a few times a year...

FunnysInLaJardin · 10/01/2020 22:34

I can cope on 8 hours but 10 hours is my ideal to feel properly relaxed. 10 hours is my holiday sleep, 8 is workday sleep.
