To think that actually most adults need more than the recommended 7-8 hours sleep a night?

I can cope fairly well on minimal sleep, having 3 no sleeping kids helped with that. But I tend to find if I can get 9-10 hours that's when I'm best refreshed.

I know advice is 7-8 hours for adults (and that lie ins are not recommended, that's it better to keep the exact same bedtimes & waking times), but I also know 7 hours just feels like I've not slept enough.

My children all live happily and energetically on around 5 hours a night. They're 10, 8 & 7.

So, who are these adults that are full of beans on 7-8 hours?

Sleep 6 hours. Naturally wake after 6.
Once awake I can not go back to sleep or laze.

I couldn't cope on seven hours for more than a few nights...I'd flake out. I slept for 11 hours last night! I've always needed a lot of sleep.

YABU to assume everyone is like you.

I need around 7 hours of sleep a night. Can cope on 6 if I have to, but any less and I struggle. However I am (and always have been) physically incapable of sleeping more than 8 hours. Literally- I will wake up after 8 hours. Doesn't matter what time I go to bed. If I go to bed really early I wake up really early.

I felt refreshed and totally fine on 7 hours of sleep, and have never needed lots of sleep, nor enjoyed it.

Personally I know people who say they need at least 8 hours to function, and others like me who need less.

I've always needed a lot of sleep. Usually get 6-8 hours and still have a nap most weekdays when DD is at school. I notice that according to my Fitbit I dont get much deep sleep, maybe that's why. I could easily sleep for 12+ hours if I didnt have to get up. Hasn't happened for 8 years now though

@AgathaVanHelsing just free time! Reading, watching tv - whatever. Totally illogical I know.

feelingverylazytoday · 11/01/2020 18:02

It's about 5-6 hours for me. I wake up naturally without an alarm. I don't understand how people sleep for 9-10 hours without waking up.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 11/01/2020 18:02

I'm pretty good on about 8 hours sleep. It never happens though!
Anything over 9 and I feel so groggy, it's worse than not enough sleep. Anything under 7 is not enough and I'm tired all day. I tend to get about 6...
I stay up too late, about 12/1, and get up too early 6/7.

I'm literally always tired.

ChocolateCoins19 · 11/01/2020 18:09

I get by on very little. Dd doesn't sleep brilliantly and being pregnant hasn't helped.. In 2 weeks baby should be here so be less.
I can. Last ages but every so often I just crash and burn.
Today dd was with family. Ds was out. Dh at work. Crashed on sofa for 2 hours.
I did feel shit after for a while until had another shower to wake me.

ASatisfyingThump · 11/01/2020 18:22

I find broken sleep is worse than lack of sleep, I can manage (not well, but functioning) on 6 hours as long as it's a solid chunk, but if my sleeps broken it doesn't matter how much I get, I'll feel like shit. Can't nap without waking up groggy either, no matter how tired I am. It really annoys me because I need a lot more sleep than DH does, but he can nap and I can't Sad

I love sleeping. Ideally on a work night I would go to bed at 9 to get up at 6:30!! Usually it's around 10 and I hate getting up.

I do sleep in on the weekend. Have had a super busy week back at work and went to bed at 11 last night. Woke up at 9 this morning feeling great Grin

mizu · 11/01/2020 18:26

DDs are teens now butwhen they were little I really struggled on so little sleep, in fact I can barely remember the first 5 years!!

CloudyVanilla · 11/01/2020 18:27

I have timed that I need 9.5 hours sleep a night for optimal function Blush

Hope it lessens as I get older, that's what my parents said will happen.

notangelinajolie · 11/01/2020 18:42

6-7 hours a night for most of my adult life but now it's more like 11-12 hours a night. Now that our children are grown up and DH doesn't start work till 2pm - I don't have any need to get up early. It's not unusual for us to go to bed at 10-11pm and not wake until 10am. TBH I actually feel better on less sleep but while it's still dark in the mornings I'm staying snuggled up in bed Smile

BadMoon · 11/01/2020 19:19

I would love to get 8 hours! I'm lucky if I get 6.5. No problem getting to sleep, it's just staying asleep is the challenge. I wake up frequently during the night to get up for the loo and then can't sleep again. It's particularly bad before my period. I've always been like this. I recently found out that my iron levels are incredibly low. So basically I feel like a zombie!

GhostsToMonsoon · 11/01/2020 19:23

I think ideally I need 9 hours sleep and I even got 10 some nights in the Christmas holidays. I can manage the odd night with 6 or 7 but not several in a row. Some nights I sleep very well. Other nights I have great trouble falling asleep, or wake up in the night and can't get back to sleep.
