AIBU to think there’s no justification for eating meat and dairy any more?

People are educated now. People know that eating meat and dairy is disastrous for the planet. People know it’s causing an unprecedented climate crisis. People know it causes untold cruelty to animals.

So why are people still doing it? There is a vegan substitute for virtually every meat and dairy product you can think of. What is going on here?

The number of people I’ve seen on social media breaking their hearts over Australia shooting wild camels and horses because they drink too much water while still eating beef blows my mind.

You can't really be angry at people on MN for levels of meat consumption though.
1 chicken lasts everyone here at least a week to feed their family, so...

Op, maybe you hadn't considered that there are reasons that people can't or shouldn't just cut entire food groups out. People with health conditions, and also people with eating disorders. I am an animal lover and tried to go vegan for a while but it triggered my binge episodes very badly. Also, I am pretty poor currently and can only afford basics ranges from the supermarket, meaning that I probably consume the lowest welfare meat and dairy available. That's the situation I'm in. When I have more money I may choose to buy higher welfare meat, but I also may not. Nobody should be judging anyone for how they live their lives.

Lifecraft · 10/01/2020 16:59

The awful circumstances in Australia do not in anyway negate the suffering that trillions of animals go through every day all over the world.

A billion is a thousand million. And a trillion is a thousand billion. I'm interest how you arrive at trillions (so at least 2 trillion) suffering daily? That's 285 animals for every person on the planet!

Bitchbadgerplease · 10/01/2020 17:00

I'm laughing at the I'm a low cadaver so cant go vegan. Utter bollocks. All the people saying do you drive a car or have kids etc, it isnt a race to the bottom. If you do those things AND eat meat/dairy, you are causing more damage than if you don't.

AllergicToAMop · 10/01/2020 17:16

I'm laughing at the I'm a low cadaver so cant go vegan.

Cadaver really can't go vegan though. Like really can't

Goingunderground2 · 10/01/2020 17:19

Eating veg out of season flown around the world, broccoli from Kenya etc. I like the idea of Veganuary and people trying something new but why promote it when all the veg is out of season!

PorpentinaScamander · 10/01/2020 17:19

Haven't RTFT but in answer to So why are people still doing it?
Because I want to. Because I like the taste of it.

If you don't want to then great. Good for you. Have a shiny gold star. Star But don't tell others what they should/shouldn't eat.

GoldfishGirl · 10/01/2020 17:31

My money is on them growing meat in a lab in future.

ittakes2 · 10/01/2020 17:35

Because I have ceoliacs disease and can’t eat all those vegan substitutes you are telling me I should eat or I will get very sick. You sound bonkers thinking one solution suits everyone.

BlaueLagune · 10/01/2020 17:35

My latte says NO

Oh dear. I'll try it and report back!

MaxNormal · 10/01/2020 17:36

I see OP hasn't ventured back to talk to us bloodmouths today then.

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 10/01/2020 17:36

Why on earth would artifically mass manufacturing a product be less damaging to the planet than using the natural ecosystem, i.e. farm animals? It needs ingredients, factories, waste management, energy.

Plastic is made in a lab, it hasn't exactly been good for the environment has it?

ffswhatnext · 10/01/2020 17:53

If every single vitamin and mineral could be kept at a normal level when being a vegan, it would be fine.
There are lots of people out there such as @Lucietigger and myself who cannot have a healthy life being a vegan.
And just like the militant bf's years ago, there's a lot of Vegans out there who will not accept that it doesn't suit everyone for their own health reasons.

If anyone wants to have a go and create a month meal plan that caters to:
High iron, low fibre, low carbs, low sugar, high phosphates, low calcium, no legumes so no tofu, beans etc, low grains, high zinc and magnesium. There's more but those are the main ones.

That will require just a monthly B12 injection and iron infusion unless I'm ill and everything fucks up, then go for it. Even with eating fish and meat it's bloody hard to balance.

RibenaMonsoon · 10/01/2020 18:06

You don’t have to eat soya to be vegan. I literally never do.

There are 9 of the 22 amino acids your body utilises that it can only get from eating "complete proteins". Most of which come from eating meat, fish and dairy.
There are 2 plant based products that will also give your body complete proteins. One of which you have said you don't eat.
That doesn't sound like a healthy diet at all.

I don't personally have any issues with vegans and think it's great that they are doing what they feel passionate about however, when you start preaching to me you can bugger off.

My grandparents have a farm and yes I could slaughter an animal if I needed to eat one. I don't personally think that a vegan diet is healthy.

They were queuing outside the door of 'Greggs' today to buy their new 'vegan bakes'....healthier lifestyle choice...HmmConfused

FeckOffGraham · 10/01/2020 18:17

I also don't think many vegans have a healthy diet and it's definitely easier to get more protein and b vitamins from animals. I also hate palm oil and trans fats, which are vegan. I know many vegans don't eat either, but again, it's easier to avoid them if you eat non vegan food.

I say all this as a former vegan going way back. I wasnt healthy as a vegan and felt hungry all the time. I definitely eat less, now that I eat some meat, eggs and dairy. I was always scoffing as a vegan and got quite fat Blush. Worst vegan ever.

I think it's like any WOE where you cut out a lot of food; some people take to it like a duck to water and others don't.

ZebrasAreHorsesInPyjamas · 10/01/2020 18:17

Haven't RTFT because I've read dozens similar but:

Bacon and cheese toastie.

And that's all I am going to say about that! Grin

RibenaMonsoon · 10/01/2020 18:20

Sorry I meant 20 not 22 and 4, not 2.
That's what you get BF a squirming baby with a new phone.

Also. Bacon.

ArchieStar · 10/01/2020 18:24

I can’t eat soy products. It’s not that I don’t like the taste (I don’t but that’s besides the point) but soy products, even soy based products, really aggravate one of my health conditions to the point I can be hospitalised. So I avoid those with my life :)

Barbie222 · 10/01/2020 18:25

I once heard someone trying to argue this point in the Yorkshire Dales. It didn't go well. To be fair, she did come to see the irony of transporting in tons of Mediterranean veg amongst the lambs. Like everything else in life, eating sustainably really depends on so many factors that hard and fast rules don't always work.

beautifulstranger101 · 10/01/2020 18:25

I agree 100%. I never ever comment on what anyone else eats and if people choose to be vegan then great- I'm glad they found something that works for them and they are passionate about.

HOWEVER, the second people start lecturing me about what I should be eating (according to them), all bets are off. I was vegetarian for a year and ended up anaemic. Heme iron is the only way my body properly absorbs iron so I will do whats right for MY body and it really is noone else's business what or how I choose to eat. I dont lecture anyone else about how they should be living so I expect the same respect from others. If you are unable to respect other people's lifestyle choices then you can't really expect others to be respectful about yours.

Oh, and soya does weird things to my periods so I would stay well away from it- I actually find it very disturbing that soya can affect hormones to such an extent and i dont think that is healthy at all.

derxa · 10/01/2020 18:27

What do vegans do when they can't breast feed? Surely they use formula.

bluenoir · 10/01/2020 18:34

Because I'm an omnivore?
