AIBU to think there’s no justification for eating meat and dairy any more?

People are educated now. People know that eating meat and dairy is disastrous for the planet. People know it’s causing an unprecedented climate crisis. People know it causes untold cruelty to animals.

So why are people still doing it? There is a vegan substitute for virtually every meat and dairy product you can think of. What is going on here?

The number of people I’ve seen on social media breaking their hearts over Australia shooting wild camels and horses because they drink too much water while still eating beef blows my mind.

Yes, in the UK male chicks are killed the day they are born. They're sexed and then placed on a macerator conveyor belt. Which is exactly what it sounds like. It does sound preposterous, doesn't it?

AvaSnowdrop · 09/01/2020 22:13

Even if we don’t eat animals we’ll still have to kill them. Farmers will have to shoot rabbits and spray pests that eat their crops. Builders will have to destroy wildlife habitats to build houses. Homeowners will have to poison rats and insects that infest their homes. And I’m sure even a vegan would use medication if they had a tapeworm or headlice. It’s impossible to live without killing something else.

donquixotedelamancha · 09/01/2020 22:14

People pretend to hate vegans because we’re annoying and preachy

  1. Why is criticism and disagreement hatred? I've never met or heard of anyone genuinely hating vegans.
  1. Why not try being less preachy and annoying? If you get less criticism then clearly it was the cause.
AllergicToAMop · 09/01/2020 22:14

But!
What will happen if everyone turns vegan😱 It will then be the factory produced fake meat and substitutes which will be the highest emission thing. So then people will have to stop eating that, because emissions are high. And so on and so on.

I would ask op how old they are but they are just trolling here anyway

Trewser · 09/01/2020 22:14

I don't want the countryside covered in horrible plastic polytunnels thanks.

wishing4sun · 09/01/2020 22:14

I have a choice I choose to eat meat and dairy. I don't have to justify my choice, just as much as you don't have to justify yours.

Knittinglikemad · 09/01/2020 22:15

There are some of us that can’t eat vegetables, plant based alternatives & processed foods extra due to medical conditions, so are we to be condemned for eating meat !!

FriedasCarLoad · 09/01/2020 22:15

People are literally going to die because of the climate crisis and you’re like ‘but cheese tastes good

We don't need to become vegans for the sake of the planet. Cutting down on meat and dairy is sufficient.

And I fly and drive less than most of the vegans I know. OP, have you given up flying? And buying plastic? And buying new when second hand is available?

We don't have to be doing everything right to make any change worthwhile, but you'd better be doing well if you lecture and judge people like this Grin

AnyFucker · 09/01/2020 22:16

I don't need to justify myself to you

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 09/01/2020 22:16

Livestock are crucial to a regenerative soil health cycle.
We need them to capture carbon and be a crucial part of a healthy ecosystem. We can produce healthy food from livestock.
Livestock farming does not equal 'untold cruelty' - many if not most farms have very high standards of animal welfare, and it can be achieved across all farms with adequate support and enforcement.
Many pet owners cause untold cruelty & distress to their pets!
Besides, meat is nice and good to eat. I don't have a problem with animals being killed to feed me and my family.

Ated · 09/01/2020 22:18

What about nasty animals and birds that eat each other. Go tell a polar bear about fruit and tasty veg. Lets kill all the sheep, goats, pigs, donkeys, horses and cows as well because they pass wind. Turn off power stations, gas, oil, no fuel stations for petrol and diesel. No computers, internet, walking to work only. No tv, eat raw veg and berries. Live in caves and forests, no more than one child per family and only sailing boats , bicycles or walking for travel. No food shops, grow what you can eat and wonders above, climate change will slowly stop. Oh, and cull 50% of the population.

LittleAndOften · 09/01/2020 22:18

Veganism is a misnomer. Soil is decaying plant and animal matter. Vegetables are farmed using animal products - manure, fertiliser made from blood and bone meal. Organic farming even more so. It's naive to think you can avoid this in arable farming. As Mufasa said - it's the circle of life!

GnomeDePlume · 09/01/2020 22:19

I grow potatoes, peas, carrots, onions, rhubarb, chives, garlic, tomatoes (in a cabinet greenhouse). I also have a garden where I grow asparagus and strawberries and have an apple tree and a pear tree.

Not sure where you are but right now the bits of my allotment which arent actually under water have sprouts and leeks and that's your lot. The sprouts wont last much longer. Effective storage uses energy either canning or freezing.

Purpletigers · 09/01/2020 22:19

I’m all for reducing meat and dairy intake but I’m the daughter of a farmer married to a farmer. My family circle are mostly farmers .
Reducing our intakes of meat and dairy is the way forward . Locally produced grass fed meat and free range chicken , locally grown fruit and vegetables eaten in season . These are the things that will help . Farms are becoming too big because consumers want cheap food and lots of it.
It takes more acreage to provide 100 calories from plant protein than it does from meat . We have a population crisis on our hands not a farming one .

eminencegrise · 09/01/2020 22:20

Peat bogs and rocks are great for growing juicy veg and fruit indeed! Why didn't all those people over the thousands of years they are known to have been here waste their time with fishing, farming and piracy when they could have just planted crops? Idiots!

Starlight456 · 09/01/2020 22:20

People have known about the dangers of smoking for a very long time but many still do despite it having a direct impact on their own lives.

We do have free choice ...

Anonymummy19 · 09/01/2020 22:21

Seriously catch a grip you uneducated idiot! All you vegans are the same saying that farmers are cruel to their animals etc, they can't be cruel to their animals and expect to make a living off them, it just doesn't work like that. Absolute headcases you ones!

AgeLikeWine · 09/01/2020 22:21

Oh good, yet another sanctimonious, self-righteous preaching vegan.

I enjoy eating dead animals, I am going to continue to do so and I couldn’t possibly care less what you think about that. Your dietary choices are none of my business, and mine are none of yours.

Theredjellybean · 09/01/2020 22:22

Because my gorgeous lovely dsd developed anorexia following the rabbit hole down effing veganuary.. And there is no recovery without animal fats and high grade proteins
All this woke vegan cultist propoganda is ignoring the real dangers of orthrexia and subsequently anorexia.
The numbers of cases of young people with significant eating disorders has risen vastly in last few years.
These illnesses have the highest mortality rate of all the mental health illnesses.
A balance in the propoganda might be wise.. Vegan is not a good diet for many young people

donquixotedelamancha · 09/01/2020 22:23

Veganism is a misnomer. Soil is decaying plant and animal matter. Vegetables are farmed using animal products - manure, fertiliser made from blood and bone meal. Organic farming even more so.

Are you under the impression that plants consume soil?

Also how can vegan be a misnomer? It was specifically made up to describe vegans, it doesn't mean anything else.

Windyone · 09/01/2020 22:23

Very disappointed that you haven’t answered specific points made by posters.

  • economics for areas based on farming/fishing
  • organic fertilisers containing animal products
TrainspottingWelsh · 09/01/2020 22:24

Personally I've never met anyone that hates all vegans on principle. Just uninformed annoying knobheads. I've ended an animals life before, and held many in their last moments to put them out of their misery. Not surprisingly most of the vegan gobshites I know would never have the humanity to either end the suffering of an animal themselves or ask a vet to, instead preferring them to die a slow, agonising 'natural' death.

Trewser · 09/01/2020 22:24

Vegan is not a good diet for many young people

It's an awful diet. Loads of it is processed, it is low in vitamins and minerals and a lot is very expensive and flown in from thousands of miles away.
