Egg and toast for dinner?

MaryPopppins · 08/01/2020 16:26

Settle an "argument" please.

Wednesday is roast dinner day at school so I know DC well fed today.

DH and I both had plenty of veg at lunch. (Soup/salad/noodles)

I'm proposing that Wednesday is now beans/egg (both if you want) with toast day for dinner. As ever there's also plenty of fruit and yogurts for dessert if wanted.

Other people do this for an evening meal? Right? Or am I wrong?

I’d still be hungry if I only had that after having soup/salad/noodles for lunch.

InOtterNews · 08/01/2020 16:28

If they've had a big lunch I see nothing wrong with a small/lighter dinner. I often will just have a boiled egg and toast if I've had a good lunch

Teenagemaw · 08/01/2020 16:28

My 8 year old has this for dinner sometimes.

JKScot4 · 08/01/2020 16:28

When mine were young we had a snack n pudding day, beans & toast/ soup, hot pudding; cake & custard.
It was DC favourite dinner!

Whathappenedtothelego · 08/01/2020 16:28

I think it's fine, often do egg and toast (or cheese on toast, or soup and toast) in the evening.

PineappleTart · 08/01/2020 16:29

I have this often

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 08/01/2020 16:29

I eat that for dinner (beans and egg on toast) if ive had a big lunch. I really like it!

BigFatLiar · 08/01/2020 16:30

As long as they're not going hungry no problem.

SallyWD · 08/01/2020 16:31

I think it's absolutely fine! However, I have worked in a school canteen and have to say you'd be surprised how little many of the kids eat (like 1/4 of a tiny portion) and then they go out and run around for an hour - so your kids might still need a big dinner! You'll know if they're starving though.

Caspianberg · 08/01/2020 16:32

Its fine. You can have more eggs if hungrier one evening. And like you say yoghurt and fruit is available.

Its easy and quick, contains carbs, protein, fruit blah blah... whats not to like.

Showmeyourhero · 08/01/2020 16:32

Of course it's fine, if your DH / DC have a big appetite just serve larger portions or you could always make an omelette?

DH and I often have Boiled Egg and Soldiers for our Dinner! 😋

Smellbow · 08/01/2020 16:32

It's what I'm having for tea today. Beans are veg and protein - I consider them a superfood Grin

EmmaGellerGreen · 08/01/2020 16:32

That certainly wouldn’t ever have been enough for my DS and DH would assume that if lost the plot entirely if I suggested it to him. Neither are overweight, both just active and hungry.

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/01/2020 16:33

My DSC have a roast at school on a Wednesday and we’ve tried light dinners but by half 4 they’re famished and have a snack then manage to put away sausage and mash with veg, or pasta and sauce. I think it depends on your DC, how old they are, how much of their lunch they have. At weekends they’re more than happy with something on toast but on school nights they’re always starving.

ohprettybaby · 08/01/2020 16:34

Haven't done it in years but spaghetti hoops on toast was a great favourite of mine. (Getty hoops).

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/01/2020 16:34

Absolutely fine.

Ohyesiam · 08/01/2020 16:35

All you’re doing is swapping the meals around. How could it not be fine?

MoreSexPleaseImBritish · 08/01/2020 16:35

My 10 year old would have beans on toast with a side of Broccoli every single night if I let her. she is pretty active as she swims for the county.

I do it on seeded bread and she has half a tin of beans and 1/3 of a head of broccoli. She probably has it 1-2 times a week.

She has clubs 5 days a week and I work full time so we are rarely home before 7pm. Food has to be filling and quick

PineappleDanish · 08/01/2020 16:36

Exactly. At our primary school the same portion size is served to 4.5 year olds and 12 year olds. It's not nearly enough for my oldest child. When he was 5, school lunch was plenty.

Also as an adult, I'd be wanting more than an egg on toast if i'd just had soup for my lunch.

RoseMartha · 08/01/2020 16:36

I think its fine

speakout · 08/01/2020 16:36

Wouldn't work in our house.

School lunches at my kids school- even things like roast- were pretty dire and tiny portions.

Would work in an emergency or pushed for time- but not regularly.

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2020 16:36

Really it doesn't matter what others do. If they are saying they will be hungry and that's not enough them only their opinion counts. You can have only that if you wish.

Who cooks dinner is a different story. But I can't imagine having a food rule for a given day of the week. Eat what you all fancy and that fills you up, not it's Wednesday so we need to eat beans on toast.

notangelinajolie · 08/01/2020 16:40

Beans on Toast is food of the Gods. My favourite meal of the week. Scrambled egg and beans is also up there on my list. If they fill me up would either of those not fill up a hungry child? Plenty of protein & fibre and relatively low fat/sugar compared to other meals - I see nothing wrong with that.

Poppyfr33 · 08/01/2020 16:42

We have fish finger sandwiches regularly for dinner

ViciousJackdaw · 08/01/2020 16:46

YABU. You should give the option of grated cheese on the beans too. Seriously though, why not? Three thick slices of wholegrain toast, half a tin of beans and a bit of cheese, bloody lovely meal!
