Egg and toast for dinner?

MaryPopppins · 08/01/2020 16:26

Settle an "argument" please.

Wednesday is roast dinner day at school so I know DC well fed today.

DH and I both had plenty of veg at lunch. (Soup/salad/noodles)

I'm proposing that Wednesday is now beans/egg (both if you want) with toast day for dinner. As ever there's also plenty of fruit and yogurts for dessert if wanted.

Other people do this for an evening meal? Right? Or am I wrong?

Stuff on toast is my favourite!! Poached eggs; beans; sketty; meatballs.... anything out of a tin on toast lol!

Oh and cheese. Always the cheese. And apparently I’m weird because I’d eat the whole tin of beans on toast...

Treaclepie19 · 08/01/2020 17:59

We do too. Though our 4yo currently doesn't eat egg or beans so not so much at the moment 😂

peachgreen · 08/01/2020 18:09

I only had an apple for lunch and I'm having beans on toast for dinner! Might add some scrambled egg now you've mentioned it. Yum. Perfectly fine.

LouLou789 · 08/01/2020 18:11

When I was a kid (approx 3,000 years ago) this happened every day. A “dinner” at noon then a sandwich and fruit, or cold meat salad etc at 5. If you’ve all had plenty at lunchtime then a lighter tea is fine

MozzchopsThirty · 08/01/2020 18:12

Nothing wrong with that at all
I love egg & beans on toast

TooMinty · 08/01/2020 18:20

YANBU. We often have scrambled eggs or poached eggs or beans on toast. Or an omelette with salad.

MsChatterbox · 08/01/2020 19:02

I would be fine if I had the roast dinner but not the adult lunch! I love doing a full breakfast for dinner though so maybe you could do that if adults are hungry?

schoolcats · 08/01/2020 19:03

YABU, eggs are nicer with mashed potato.

Slighty runny, fried and upside down on top of a mash mountain.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 08/01/2020 19:41

School dinner portions are small, mine always had a cooked meal when home so I knew they had eaten well for breakfast and dinner then lunch didn’t matter so much if small or they didnt like it all.

Soup for lunch then toast and egg for tea isn’t enough food for most adults.

CherryPavlova · 08/01/2020 19:52

Beans on thick toast is a real treat. I don’t do it very often, because I’m the only person in the house who eats beans, but after a long day in London there is nothing better.

Paddingtonthebear · 08/01/2020 19:54

Depends how hungry everyone is. School dinners are usually very small portions, my DC have a roast at school every Wednesday and also eat a usual full size cooked dinner at home in the evening too

Bouncebacker · 08/01/2020 20:03

Sounds heavenly. My family do this quite often - I don’t eat carbs so I have my eggs with spinach or salad or something.

  • and cheese! Last night we had homemade soup and almond cheese scones, DCs favourite is bacon sarnies and tinned tomato soup day...

Lighter dinners are great for us, and usually less clearing up. Anyone who is still hungry can have fruit, yoghurt, slice of cheese, that sort of thing.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 08/01/2020 20:08

That is what I had tonight! Eggs on toast with beans I really enjoyed it .I had a yoghurt after and feel full. I had a sandwich for lunch . DS had an omelette with ham , a side salad and bread and butter with fruit after- weds is his roast dinner day at school . He did have a sandwich and crackers about 4pm though. We had our evening meal at 6pm .

Mummyshark2018 · 08/01/2020 20:15

It's fine. My dc8 had this today after also a roast dinner at school. If they've had school dinners it's beans on toast/ soup and a wrap/ egg on toast etc then fruit . I only give them a 'proper meal' if they've had packed lunch that day. I don't think most people need 2 big hot meals every day.

Thornhill58 · 08/01/2020 20:21

I eat eggs at any point of the day. I specially like egg tacos with salsa and guacamole.
So easy and delicious.

WindInTheWishing · 08/01/2020 20:21

I often have stuff on toast for dinner/main meal of the day. Usually a choice of egg/beans/cheese/sausage/smoked salmon.

I’m a grazer though and never really do ‘big meals’ if we eat out DH will usually finish 1/2 of my meal...but I’ll be snacking on fruit by the time we are home!

Trial it for a few weeks and see how you get on. If you get complaints of hunger then can the idea if not it’s a winner!

Whathappenedtothelego · 08/01/2020 20:25

surely soup or eggs can be enough for an adult if you eat enough of them?
3 eggs poached or scrambled, 2 thick wedges of buttered toast, perhaps spread with marmite too.

A bowl of thick lentil and chicken soup, with perhaps a cream cheese sandwich to dip in.

That would definitely be enough for anyone I ever cook for.

roiseandjim · 08/01/2020 20:25

I have this as a dinner If I'm not too hungry and cba to cook I love it!

Winifredgoose · 08/01/2020 20:29

I find people saying 'it wouldn't be enough for xxxxx' so strange. How can eggs beans and toast not be enough? How is it different to a 'proper meal'? Calorie wise you can simply eat as much as you like with yoghurt and fruit before(or whatever you like), and if the concern is fruit and veg, I will often give my kids raw carrot/pepper/cucumber while they are waiting, and fruit afterwards.
When my eldest was a toddler, if we were out at lunchtime, he would have a picnic with things like oatcakes/sandwich/cheese/humous/raw veg/fruit and yoghurt. I always remember a mum from my baby group, who always brought her child a 'proper meal' in a thermos, saying 'actually, when you look at what he(my child) is eating, it's not that unhealthy!' . It seemed such a rigid, old fashioned(meat and two veg) way of viewing it. She obviously pitied my poor child.
OP, there is nothing wrong with simple meals, even if they haven't had a roast at school.

Butterfly02 · 08/01/2020 20:30

I do just that - egg/beans/toast with fruit/yoghurt/rice pudding every Wednesday the kids love it.

AriadnesFilament · 08/01/2020 20:32

Nowt wrong with that! Chuck a sausage on and it’d be even better!

dudsville · 08/01/2020 20:33

I usually prefer small evening meals. A piece of with eggs, beans maybe mushrooms, Tom's, spinach, would be perfect for me!

Poppinjay · 08/01/2020 20:34

It doesn't make any difference whether their lunch was a roast dinner or a packed lunch.

It also depends heavily on how much toast and egg they eat in the evening and whether they have snacks.

Whether it's hot or cold when presented to them is irrelevant too.

It's the quantity of food and its nutritional make-up that determines whether it's enough for your children or not.

School roast dinners will only be filling if they like them and eat enough - the same as anything else they are given for their school lunch.

I think you should just provide them with enough healthy food for them to feel satisfied and stop worrying about what other people think.

NothingIsWrong · 08/01/2020 20:35

I had a wrap for lunch, and beans on toast for tea. Plenty filling enough

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 08/01/2020 20:40

Sounds fine! As others have said, just make plenty of it if people are hungry.

I was going to have that tonight but I had to use up some chicken which I actually didn’t fancy as much!
