Egg and toast for dinner?

MaryPopppins · 08/01/2020 16:26

Settle an "argument" please.

Wednesday is roast dinner day at school so I know DC well fed today.

DH and I both had plenty of veg at lunch. (Soup/salad/noodles)

I'm proposing that Wednesday is now beans/egg (both if you want) with toast day for dinner. As ever there's also plenty of fruit and yogurts for dessert if wanted.

Other people do this for an evening meal? Right? Or am I wrong?

If they have a hot lunch then everyday could be that sort of dinner. It’s just a reversed order. Totally fine

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/01/2020 20:45

My ridiculously hungry teenage boys LOVE 'something on toast' nights... You can have more or less toast (and extra toppings) depending on hunger.

CaptainPovey · 08/01/2020 20:46

I cannot imagine having 'a day' for a dinner, so egg on toast Wednesday

What if I didn't fancy it?

My husband is unwell and its enough to get him to eat. If I told him that every Wednesday was egg on toast day, we may have a lot of eggs and bread left

Stompythedinosaur · 08/01/2020 21:02

I think beans on toast/egg on toast is a fine evening meal. Surely if you are hungry you just eat more of it? I would have 2 slices of toast with 2 eggs or plenty of beans, surely that would fill most people?

MissB83 · 08/01/2020 22:12

Sounds yummy. My favourite "slutty housewife" (in the old fashioned sense) meal when I don't want a big dinner is tinned spaghetti hoops on toast with tinned rice pudding and jam to finish! Grin

Cherrysoup · 08/01/2020 22:33

A colleague had a roast at school today. It would have fitted almost on my hand, it was so small! I was loads happier with my tin of soup.

VestaTilley · 08/01/2020 22:41

Absolutely fine and a normal thing to do- though be prepared for it not to be enough as D.C grow.

PickAChew · 08/01/2020 22:43

It's fine but don't assume the roast dinner is big portions.

Ingridla · 08/01/2020 22:48

Hell yeh, we just have cheese and crackers and some fruit after a big lunch, no need for another big dish at all.

flirtygirl · 08/01/2020 22:50

Never understand these kinds of posts and why people feel the need to ask permission, to rest and watch TV (thread a few days ago) and to not cook a meal.

Just do it. Or don't do it...

Nope I wouldn’t but then I teach Performing Arts and regularly teach dance/drama classes from 12-6/7/8 at night, so I’m ready for a proper meal. Dh wouldn’t like this either, he’d be away to the take away if I gave him that. Dd (4) got eggs on toast at a friends house before Christmas and kept telling me about how her friends mum had gave her breakfast for dinner, she also was still hungry, and I know DDs school does very good dinner (private school) but I also know at of kids (most likely dd included) eat very little so they can just rush outside and play so are very likely hungry when they get home. Also I like vegetables with every meal and don’t like raw veg on the side of a dinner, so if I’m going to be cooking veg anyway may aswell do a proper dinner.

AlwaysThinkingOfNames · 08/01/2020 23:13

I have this often. It's quite filling.
Tonight I had dairy lea on toast for dinner out of choice.

Baileys4two · 08/01/2020 23:14

Sounds good to me 👍🏼

justjuggling · 09/01/2020 01:57

I had exactly that today! Two slices of toast, 2 poached eggs and baked beans. I added some grated cheddar too. Was delicious and the type of comfort food I needed!!

Bluerussian · 09/01/2020 02:10

Beans on cheese on toast is lovely - two slices of toast - or Welsh rarebit. They are my favourite standard quick meals. However I doubt the portion of school dinner roast is the same as you would cook at home, the size probably the same as any other meal and if they are used to having a decent meal in the evening, they might miss it. You need to canvass opinion.

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/01/2020 02:15

I think peoples consumption has changed

In the 60 and 70s growing up beans on toast or egg and chips was staple evening food.

Josette77 · 09/01/2020 02:19

I often have eggs and toast for dinner.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 09/01/2020 02:23

We have a toast dinner & everyone chooses beans, eggs , cheese or combinations thereof.
I don’t understand people saying it won’t be enough Confused you could serve 3 bits of toast with 6 eggs if they needed it...

BananaTaffy · 09/01/2020 02:52

I'd happily have that, but would probably need good wedges of toast, a full tin of beans and a couple of eggs to feel full.

Weenurse · 09/01/2020 02:59

We love breakfast for dinner

BarbaraofSeville · 09/01/2020 03:41

Who's 'arguing'? Eat what you want. I eat more food for breakfast and lunch because that's when I'm hungry.

Sod eating little or nothing and being starving all day in anticipation of a big dinner. So sometimes I'm not very hungry in the evening and egg on toast sounds perfect. As long as your overall food intake is balanced/healthy then what's the issue?

The content of the meal and the size/filling power are not related. People often say they'll 'just have a sandwich' in the evening if they're not very hungry but that sandwich could easily have more calories than a fairly substantial meal made up of lean meat and vegetables or salad. Similarly, a hot meal is not necessarily more filling, bigger or more nutritious than a cold one. It's all about the amount and type of food on the plate.

So of course you're not starving your DC or leaving them at risk of malnutrition so if anyone has a problem with it, that's their lookout.

Although I'm guessing that this might be a 'DH doesn't count it as a meal unless there's a great slab of meat on the plate but he's not willing to get off his arse and cook his own' issue?

Mmer · 09/01/2020 04:16

I can't believe people saying it wouldn't be enough. How much do people eat????

Downunderduchess · 09/01/2020 04:37

Often have eggs (2) on avocado toast for dinner, love it. Really dense seeded bread toasted makes it a sufficient meal.

sashh · 09/01/2020 04:49

One of my favorite meals is boiled egg and toast soldiers.

You can jazz up the beans with some crispy bacon and a bit of grated cheese to melt into the beans.

Also depending on the age of your children this is a perfect meal for them to cook

DragonUdders · 09/01/2020 04:50

Ah, reverse breakfast! Nowt wrong with it.
