Egg and toast for dinner?

MaryPopppins · 08/01/2020 16:26

Settle an "argument" please.

Wednesday is roast dinner day at school so I know DC well fed today.

DH and I both had plenty of veg at lunch. (Soup/salad/noodles)

I'm proposing that Wednesday is now beans/egg (both if you want) with toast day for dinner. As ever there's also plenty of fruit and yogurts for dessert if wanted.

Other people do this for an evening meal? Right? Or am I wrong?

You can vote. Person who shops and prepares food 20 votes, everyone else in the family 1 vote. That should sort it.

Weffiepops · 09/01/2020 04:52

Yes it's fine

riotlady · 09/01/2020 05:06

Sounds great to me!

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/01/2020 05:30

That’s fine by me. My dd often had eggs and toast for dinner when she was little. If my dh was having eggs and toast, he’d probably have 5 eggs or something.

Angie6868 · 09/01/2020 06:05

I had a beetroot sandwich for dinner last night, so it sounds fine to me

rottiemum88 · 09/01/2020 06:13

Consensus seems to be that it's fine, but I'd be really unhappy as an adult if that was my dinner and wouldn't feed it to DS either. Perfectly fine as a lunch I guess, but to me anything on toast as an evening meal just smacks of not being bothered to cook.

reefedsail · 09/01/2020 06:28

My DS goes into school for a full hotel style breakfast every day (boarding prep) and then has a big cooked lunch and an afternoon 'bun'. I just give him cereal/ toast and fruit at dinner time. If I didn't, he'd be spherical.

Clutterbugsmum · 09/01/2020 06:37

While on the surface egg on toast with or without beans is an perfectly adequate dinner, please don't think because they have school dinner that they are being having a good meal.

At the school I worked at the reception classes lunch was at 11.45, and their roast consisted of 1 slice of meat, 2 small roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding about the size of a walnut, and a dessert spoon of veg. And pudding was a cake about an inch square.

KS1 lunch was at 12 to 12.10 pm and they would get 2 slices of meat, KS2 was at 12.30 and they would get a 2 slices of meat and an extra potato.

DS2 9 was not amused when I said it was beans and/or egg on toast for tea yesterday. It was supposed to be curry but I had to change plans.
He said in a withering tone "beans or egg great, your children are hungry after a busy day of learning and all you give them is a small snack tea"
It was so out of character I snorted with laughter and I picked up some sausages and hash browns on the way home.

Cantdoleft · 09/01/2020 07:38

Surely portion size is the thing that matters here?

One slice of thin toast and a spoonful of beans - not a meal.

The big wads of doorstep toast and a tin of beans - a meal.

Tiny bit of chilli and rice - not a meal

Proper portion of chilli and rice - a meal

Etc etc

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/01/2020 10:23

Maybe this is why we have an obesity crisis in this country.

Beans on toast was considered an actual meal not a small snack

towers14 · 09/01/2020 15:08

YABU, I could serve egg & toast as long as it came with sausage, bacon and beans otherwise family would think I'd lost my mind, no obesity, teen dd size 6/8, ds 6'3" with a 26 inch waist.

I also think you're overestimating how much they would eat at school.

Bluerussian · 09/01/2020 17:39

I sometimes have snack meals but wouldn't have given a big growing school child a snack meal at dinner/supper time. They really burn up the calories! We always cooked dinner each evening, it was nice, something to look forward to. For the odd night off cooking we could have something like fish and chips or a lasagne from the freezer but not regularly. Eating together is part of home life.

doingmeheadin · 09/01/2020 22:21

No, my 7 year old would be so unimpressed with this for dinner. He'd eat it but then ask for more and more food to fill him up properly before bed. My husband would probably order a domino's if this was on offer for dinner after getting home after a long day! Grin

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/01/2020 13:51

I am shocked people think Eggs or beans on toast isn’t a proper meal.

We have this at least every other week

Lasagna and fish and chips (vegetarian/vegan version) are also proper meals to us.

Ragwort · 10/01/2020 13:54

Perfectly fine, people seem obsessed with ‘proper dinners’, if you are hungry just have some extra cheese, fruit, yogurt etc.

Ragwort · 10/01/2020 13:58

rottie but if you’d had a roast meal at lunch time surely you wouldn’t expect another ‘full evening meal’. Hmm.

And surely there’s actually nothing wrong with ‘not being bothered to cook occasionally’? There is so much pressure on (mainly) women to produce a fresh, cooked from scratch meal every single night, no wonder many people are exhausted. I frequently just do a simple sandwich/jacket potato/cheese on toast meal - no one has died of starvation in my family.

Poppinjay · 13/01/2020 16:50

And surely there’s actually nothing wrong with ‘not being bothered to cook occasionally’?

As long as there's enough food to fill you up, it's palatable and it's part of an overall balanced diet, it makes no difference whatsoever whether it's cooked, raw (fruit/veg, not meat/fish), hot, cold, toasted, roasted, grilled or boiled.

Grumbley · 13/01/2020 16:58

Beans on toast with a fried egg on top or boiled eggs with soldiers are great dinners.

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 13/01/2020 16:59

Now I really want beans and egg on toast for tea.

Which is a shame as I've already got bubble and squeak ready to fry up with poached eggs for tea.

Dozer · 13/01/2020 17:00

Like beans on toast, but school “roast lunch” isn’t like home roast and no different from other school lunches IME.

Duvetday8 · 13/01/2020 17:32

I often have 2x eggs scrambled on a slice of wholemeal toast for dinner. It's a lovely filling meal

Changedmyname1235677 · 13/01/2020 17:33

I think it's fine as long as you have something decent for lunch.

MerryDeath · 13/01/2020 17:34

definitely. eggs are a perfect food, beans not far off.

KatherineJaneway · 14/01/2020 08:08

I must admit I haven't had egg on toast or beans on toast for dinner for years. My main meal of the day is dinner and I want a proper meal. While it might be filling, I don't see it as a proper meal for myself. However I don't have kids so can understand it can be a quick easy dish for a busy family.
