Not AIBU but posting for traffic.

Has anyone had nail surgery and if so how did you recover from it?

The bandages are so big in proportion of my toes and I'm unable to wear trainers.

I'm back in work on Thursday and need to find some footwear I can wear and walk in and also drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions or links to what I can possibly wear? I work in an office environment, but will need to be able to walk there and back.

I'm due to get my dressing changed on Friday where I'm hoping the bandages will be smaller and I'll be able to wear trainers.

Feeling very sorry for myself at the moment. Can't get comfy as the numbness has fully worn off now so toes are painful and throbbing along with where the needles went in.

You're back on Thursday? With bloody big bandages like that? You poor sod, can you not stay off til after you get the dressings changed?

Anyhow, I'd suggest Adilettes/shower shoes but it won't be safe to drive in them.

Knittedfairies · 07/01/2020 18:14

Ouch! I doubt you'll be able to drive on Thursday.

ToeTroubles · 07/01/2020 18:16

Yup. I cannot afford to take 4 days off work plus I'm needed as no one can cover my role. Been told I can drive from tomorrow, but not sure how if I can't wear trainers or similar?

Could do with something like trainers but that will somehow fit.

Hoping the pain is much less by the time I'm back in work.

Velcro strap sandals - the only things i could wear when i had mine done, with loose socks over it all to keep the bandages clean

Not ideal this time of year, but i can almost guarantee that you won't be able to wear trainers - the bandages may be smaller but not that much smaller...

Ime anyway..

TheDarkPassenger · 07/01/2020 18:18

Sounds silly, but my friend bought some ‘loafers’ from primark.. they turned out to be slippers and he’d been wearing them out and about for ages 😂😂😂

Would something like that work? Slippers tend to be comfy inside and big fitting and you can easily slip them off once tucked behind your desk?

AllideasAndNoAction · 07/01/2020 18:18

Speak to your boss, explain the problem, ask if they’ll pay for a taxi for if you are needed back that badly. If you can’t drive or wear shoes then you can’t drive or wear shoes. 🤷‍♀️

I had nail surgery last year. My bandage was just a big plaster after the first appointment to change it. You should be able wear regular shoes afterwards.

DisasterMagnet · 07/01/2020 18:21

I just wore flip flops after my nail surgery xx

Elieza · 07/01/2020 18:22

Crocs? You can get cheap copies. Buy a couple of sizes too big so you can keep your heel right back and your toes have plenty of room?

notangelinajolie · 07/01/2020 18:24

Black Crocs?

PurpleBee39 · 07/01/2020 18:24

As another poster has mentioned try some velcro sandals as a temporary measure. I know they are not fashionable or ideal in winter but what about these?

LoudBatPerson · 07/01/2020 18:26

After your appointment on Friday you should be in normal plaster sized dressings.

I wouldn't drive until after you have the big bandages removed as they will get in the way when driving even if you wear sandals.

If you really have to go to work on Thursday I would speak to your company about them paying for a can. My company had done on occasion when they needed people in the physical office who can't drive (for eg a broken foot etc) and no reasonable public transport.

MapMyMum · 07/01/2020 18:28

Ill just point out that just because the drs have said youre safe to drive, if you are in too much pain to do a proper emergency stop then you may not be covered by your insurance if something happens...
As for the shoe issue...I think anything that goes over the toe might hurt as itll be putting weight on the toe if you see what I mean. Maybe the awful sandals are the best option, sorry!

ToeTroubles · 07/01/2020 18:32

Thank you all.

The taxi isn't an option as I can't afford them and work will not pay. I can walk there and back until Friday. I'll need to drive to my appointment for the change of bandages and then in the evening I have a hour drive to collect my son from childcare. Although I'm going to see if I can find someone to possibly help as a one off for that.

Im not happy about the size of the bandages. I'm under strict instructions not to touch them and to keep them on until my appointment on Friday.

Also, how the heck do I shower when I can't get it wet? Can't stick a foot out because it's both of them. Can't not shower for 4 days.

OP posts:
PotteringAlong · 07/01/2020 18:46

Of course you can not shower for 4 days! What do you think will happen? Have a wash and you will be fine.

ActualHornist · 07/01/2020 18:47

You’ll have to strip wash.

Have you got wellies you can wear? Maybe go to a charity shop and get some huge ones, they’ll be fine to walk to work in with big socks and wear slippers at work.

I had mine done as a teen but it was summer so I just wore flip flops. The massive bandages won’t stay on too long.

Almostfifty · 07/01/2020 18:47

You'll have to strip wash for a few days. They should have given you velcro shoes, they did when I had my feet done.

Try flip flops.

Macandcheeseplease · 07/01/2020 18:47

I had surgery on my toe and wore ugg-style boots for the recovery period after. They were so comfy. Think I bought primark cheapies a size bigger than normal.

ToeTroubles · 07/01/2020 18:49

I can't go to work with greasy hair and smelly pits haha. I can wash my hair over the bath and have a sink wash I suppose.

I'm hoping the procedure works and I don't have to go through this again. Didn't even consider recovery on toes would be this frustrating.

OP posts:
DorisDances · 07/01/2020 18:49

I had both mine done - plasticfreezer bag secured with an elastic band sorts the showering issue. I bought cheap slip ons (spa type white slide ons) and used those until the big bandage came off. Sounds like you didn't get clear advice before having the OP unfortunately. Hope you recover fully soon OP.

SpoonBlender · 07/01/2020 18:51

Work can't do without you but won't spare a few quid for a taxi? They're taking the piss. Take thursday and friday off.

Serin · 07/01/2020 18:52

What is your job OP?
I'm hoping you get to sit down for most of your day.

ToeTroubles · 07/01/2020 18:56

I work in an office so once there I can stay out apart from loo breaks and lunch time.
