Not AIBU but posting for traffic.

Has anyone had nail surgery and if so how did you recover from it?

The bandages are so big in proportion of my toes and I'm unable to wear trainers.

I'm back in work on Thursday and need to find some footwear I can wear and walk in and also drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions or links to what I can possibly wear? I work in an office environment, but will need to be able to walk there and back.

I'm due to get my dressing changed on Friday where I'm hoping the bandages will be smaller and I'll be able to wear trainers.

Feeling very sorry for myself at the moment. Can't get comfy as the numbness has fully worn off now so toes are painful and throbbing along with where the needles went in.

I'm shocked that you drove after having this done, I'm sorry Op but personally I find that terrible. The lack of consideration for others (huge crash risk).

ToeTroubles · 11/01/2020 19:49

The top and heel of one sock for wet but the bandage was dry. I did have a pair of normal socks and then slipper socks on under the bag.

In regards to driving I was told it was safe to drive from Wednesday. Also, if I could not wear trainers I would not drive.

It is not dangerous as a driver to drive currently. The main risk is pain to myself. If I have to do an emergency brake this just means putting pressure on one foot which will hurt afterwards.

Also, I'm only driving when really necessary.

My 11 year old son has just sat on my feet :(

They were under a blanket on the sofa and he forgot so sat down. Oh. My. God. They hurt so much right now.

Dosing up to the eye balls with painkillers and hoping they feel better soon.

Oh they do look sore.

ToeTroubles · 12/01/2020 19:48

They are currently. I'm taking paracetamol and ibuprofen as often as I can. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I won't need that.

I got an infection after nail surgery. Do they feel hot or swollen or smelly? If so you may need antibiotics like I did.

ToeTroubles · 12/01/2020 19:59

They are throbbing at the moment but that's only started since they were sat on. I've cleaned them a little with a wipe but on Friday she scraped the dried blood off with a scalpel. I'm assuming I'm better leaving the scabs alone as that's part of the healing process?

I'm not sure what the sore red parts are just below my nail if I'm honest. Maybe where they injected to numb them?
They don't smell or anything and they were checked on Friday so I don't think there is infection there.

A tip I saw somewhere, was to puf your foot/feet in a box in bed, with the duvet over the box.
It stop the weight of the duvet aggravating sore feet.

You've got a "Phenol Burn" - it's a strong caustic which kills off the nail matrix and it will always get on the skin when it's applied ( that's the bit where they time the application and you might feel the pressure of the sticks )
It's neutralised to stop the action but you have a mascerated or red peeling skin .
As it's just behind the nail plate where you feel the pain it's more likely that . Injections are more to the base of the toe (I had them at College in practice for our Nail Surgery training. No fun but they wear off quickly depending on what is used . )
And don't forget there's a fair bit of effort taking a nail or nail section out . Thankfully you don't feel it but when your local wears off you do (like after dental treatment)

Your DS sitting on them.....ouch , usually it's dogs that do that !

ToeTroubles · 12/01/2020 20:57

Ah I didn't think of the acid. Just assumed it must have been caused by the injections.

She did time it. 3 x 1 minute per toe. No idea what the 3rd minute is for though.

May I just ask, was this due to ingrowing toenails? They look so sore.

ToeTroubles · 12/01/2020 23:37

Buster it was. Although I had them cut a few weeks before the surgery, so at the time of surgery they were not sore or infected.

I know if they are this can cause issues with healing. I've had issues with my toes since being a teenager. Spend every week cutting the corners to get and prevent it and had infections probably 6 or more times a year.

Actually excited by the prospect of a future with normal toes!

I'm sorry about the rant about you driving op, that was unnecessary of me.

Lifeoverhaul · 13/01/2020 05:38

I had this done when I was a teenager. The injections to numb it were horrifically painful but it never hurt after that. Recovery was very quick.

ToeTroubles · 13/01/2020 21:17

I'm going to try a shower without the bin bags. Hoping the shampoo doesn't sting too much but will then apply nice fresh dressings.

Wtf has happened to my toe!!!

OP posts:
eavers · 16/01/2020 16:26

Infected? Happened to my ds, very common.

ToeTroubles · 16/01/2020 21:26

It isn't hot to touch and there is no puss, so I don't really know.

Sidge · 16/01/2020 21:36

Doesn’t look infected, looks like a normal post op IGTN removal.

You have a phenol burn I think which has blistered. The sides are granulating which is good. Some dried blood which will come off in time.

Keep them covered, the blisters are vulnerable.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/01/2020 21:38

Looks normal post op to me too. Bathe it with salt water?

TurduckenFucken · 16/01/2020 21:38

Have you had the two sides of the nail removed, or had the skin each side removed? Did they do anything at the base of the nail? That looks so sore!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/01/2020 21:39

Perhaps don't bathe it yet. Just looks a bit soggy from being covered.
