Not AIBU but posting for traffic.

Has anyone had nail surgery and if so how did you recover from it?

The bandages are so big in proportion of my toes and I'm unable to wear trainers.

I'm back in work on Thursday and need to find some footwear I can wear and walk in and also drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions or links to what I can possibly wear? I work in an office environment, but will need to be able to walk there and back.

I'm due to get my dressing changed on Friday where I'm hoping the bandages will be smaller and I'll be able to wear trainers.

Feeling very sorry for myself at the moment. Can't get comfy as the numbness has fully worn off now so toes are painful and throbbing along with where the needles went in.

I can't sleep! My toes are throbbing and I just can't find a comfy position to put them in.

I do nail surgery. I've had three toe nail surgeries myself as well, my student did them for me. You need those bandages on as toes bleed a LOT and you need the compression and padding.
You can wear flip flops or open toes sandals, I'm sure your boss will understand.
The follow up dressing will be very small and you'll be able to get normal shoes on.
You can get waterproof shower boots off Amazon as you musn't get them wet until they heal which could be up to 6 weeks but hopefully sooner.

Have you tried paramol for the pain, it's very good and you can buy it over the counter.

madcatladyforever · 08/01/2020 01:22

Or cheaper option large freezer bags with elastic bands round the ankle. Don't use carrier bags as they have holes in to stop kids suffocating.

sazzle27 · 08/01/2020 11:22

I'd try to avoid ibuprofen/aspirin/nurofen for the moment OP - stick to paracetamol or cocodamol for the pain 👍🏻

YasssKween · 08/01/2020 13:50

How are you doing today @ToeTroubles? Did you manage to get any sleep at all?

ToeTroubles · 08/01/2020 14:15

I did manage sleep at around 3am and slept quite well after that. My over sized trainers arrived and are wearable but only for short amounts.
I'm going to wear them for driving and any outdoor walking and then change into slip ons.

The pain is much less today and I've not needed any pain relief so far.

The bandages at the bottom seem to be becoming a bit loose so I'm hoping they stay put until Friday.

Quite worried about being in work tomorrow. I'm going to have to sit and move very carefully around the office I think. Shame I don't have big fluffy slippers. My feet feel quite vulnerable in slip ons I am so worried about knocking my toes.

Back in work tomorrow and I can't sleep.

Can't get comfortable with my throbbing toes.

That tells you that you shouldn't be going to work. You're not safe to drive. If they want you in then they'll have to pay for a taxi. Are you able to properly use the brake pedal incase of an emergency??

pinkdelight · 08/01/2020 23:28

Just because they said you can work/drive from X date doesn't mean you should. It really sounds like you need to be off until next Monday. People take different lengths of time to heal and you could very much regret rushing your recovery. The office will cope without you. Madness to go in and definitely to drive in too big shoes and in pain. Literally put your feet up, get better, get the dressing changed and don't stress. It's two days of work. Your health is more important.

YasssKween · 09/01/2020 08:14

Oh god are you going to drive today OP?! You are not safe to based on your description of how it's feeling.

I know people will come on thread and say they drove just fine after the same amount of time as you but you know your body and it doesn't sound like you should be.

Also if it was that painful overnight then think how painful it will be tonight after a day of using it intermittently.

Best to have today, tomorrow and the weekend to properly recover and go back Monday otherwise it'll drag on and on in the long run.

I know in reality though work can be dicks about this stuff - is there any way you could stay off til monday?

Knittedfairies · 09/01/2020 08:50

If your toes are painful after keeping your feet up, you're going to be in agony after walking about or, God forbid, driving. Stay at home.

Yeahnah2020 · 09/01/2020 09:17

Plastic bags and duct tape. Works well!

ToeTroubles · 09/01/2020 13:37

I'm not in pain it's just very uncomfortable. I've come into work today and pottered around in my socks.
Currently spending my lunch in the chill out room with my feet up.
So looking forward to getting the bandages changed tomorrow!

My colleagues are find it rather amusing watching me hobble around the office like a 90 year old.

OP posts:
ToeTroubles · 09/01/2020 13:39

Also, the reason I'm in work is because I can't afford unpaid time off and I've already used 2 days holiday. If I use it more this causes issues later on in the year.

OP posts:
safariboot · 09/01/2020 15:02

Hope you recover well. And hope it's safe to walk in socks in your office.

I would have opted for some walking/hiking sandals, though it might be hard to find them at this time of year.

No paid sick leave I take it?

ToeTroubles · 09/01/2020 20:14

No paid sick leave.

I do have flip flops but they press on top of the bandages so not comfy.

The office is carpeted so safe and when using the stairs I wear the flip flops.

People may be giggling at me hobbling about but they have been very careful when near not to get close to my feet and have made sure I don't have to walk more than I have to. One of the girls even went out and got me lunch today whilst I sat with my feet up.

WaggleWiggle · 09/01/2020 21:41

I’ve had this done. I wore Uggs after but the podiatrist recommended trainers so that the foot doesn’t move around as much as this creates friction on the repairing skin. For showers, I had a pair of these beauties amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Bandage-Protector-Surgery-Recover/dp/B07M7P3NT1]]

Dixiechickonhols · 09/01/2020 21:52

I had surgery and a tracheotomy. No shower for just over 2 weeks. Strip wash and dry shampoo.

ToeTroubles · 10/01/2020 01:24

After a few hours sleep I have woken up so uncomfortable.

The pain seems to have kicked in. Not sure if I've been moving in my sleep and put pressure on them.

Now can't sleep.

Knittedfairies · 10/01/2020 12:22

Perhaps your pain was caused by hobbling about the office? Today is the day the dressings are changed I think; I hope that goes well and your toes are healing.

ToeTroubles · 10/01/2020 13:06

Half an hour until my appointment. I really cannot wait lol. Not sure I want to see under the dressings though!!

OP posts:
ToeTroubles · 10/01/2020 18:15

Hurts much more because she's cleaned the wounds and changed the dressing but I can now get my trainers on and walk much easier.
