Potty in pub

Went out for lunch with a friend today, went to a family friendly pub for lunch as has a new baby and i have a toddler.

A group were sat on the next table with older toddlers who were pottering around a little play area.

Anyway one of the toddlers went over to their mum and said she needed a wee. The mother then got a potty out from under the pram and popped it on the floor where the toddler promptly sat on it and had a wee! We were eating at the time!

I couldn't help myself saying "you know there's a toilet right there and they have a little seat for toddlers?" She looked at me and said "oh do they? Well I've got this as this is what she is used to!". I wish I'd said something about people eating but I was just astounded! She then went to the toilet to empty the potty!

I'm just shocked that someone would let their child use a potty where people are eating!! No one else in the group batted an eyelid!

Is this a thing? When I potty trained my eldest we stayed in a few days until he could hold it in enough to make it to an actual toilet! I certainly never carted a potty round with me!

I could understand taking a potty to use in the actual toilets but to use it in the middle of the pub!!Shock

Anyone else experienced this? I wouldn't change a nappy in the middle of a pub so definitely wouldn't let my child use a potty!

@PixieDustt
What is rude about saying "you know there's a toilet right there and they have a little seat for toddlers?"

Clearly you don't understand what the word 'rude' means.

No need for it. What if the wain decided she wanted a poo.

revolting - well done for pulling her up on it.
I'd have complained to the manager and/or bar and restaurant staff.

I certainly wouldn't have finished my meal and would not expected to pay for it. And probably put bad reviews on tripadvisor, etc - depending on the actions of the manager. I would not pay to eat in a toilet, which is effectively what the entitled cow has turned the restaurant into.

No, honest question, what is right to do in that stage? The museum thing was a split second decision but I'm 90% sure there would have been a wee on the floor if I'd tried to zoom her to toilet

Training pants, and a change of clothes. Not the disposable ones that are just like a nappy. The ones that are just ordinary pants but a bit thicker and with a waterproof layer. They'll feel much like pants to the child, but will contain the pee for a few moments to allow you to get to the toilets for a change of clothes.

We uswd to go to a sort of soft play mat session at oit local gym and there was a woman who always brought two potties with her for the two children she brought why one wouldn't suffice i dont know. Toilet were available immediately outside the room . She used to let the children use the potty in front of everyone then leave the contents there. The final straw came when my little boy aged 18 months at the time kicked the full potty as he was playing and kicked it on the floor all over himself. I quietly nuts at her and told her to sort it out and that her behaviour was awful. It is really entitled behaviour.grim grim grim.

This is just nasty! How about wiping and hand washing? I would have told the woman she as gross/revolting.

When my son was two, because we live many miles from a town we'd take his potty in our mini van and always made sure he had a chance to use it before going into shops, businesses, restaurants etc. He fell asleep on it once - leaned against the car seat and nodded off - I still have the photo.

I can't think of a single time when this would be ok. Good grief, some people really do think that just their and their children's needs matter. It is hideously rude to encourage your child to do that. It doesn't take much to knock over a potty, what would she have done then I wonder? Some parents have excuses such as additional needs, etc and I know all too well about the difficulties of toilet training (why call it potty training when it should be training them how to use a toilet correctly, respectfully and hygienically) a child with additional needs. I just never thought that my child's needs come before the rest of the population's. There are pull ups or toilet training pants that can be used. Although it sounds horrid, it wasn't until my child wet themselves and it felt a bit ick that it really sunk in about using the toilet when encouraged to do so. I'd go so far as to say every child wets themselves when toilet training, it happens. It's hardly a flood of wee, it usually just makes a damp patch on the front of their clothes. In which case you clean and change them into clean ones in the changing area.
When did we, as a population, become so unaware of others and so selfish?

@DisappearingGirl

You can get these pants. That are essential like pants. But also like a pull up. That isn’t a pull up.

Other than that. As others have suggested. You take multiple sets of clothes. And yes. If there’s a wet spot in the toilet. It’s better than sitting your child down In a potty. In public.

Would it of been ok if they’d of taken a photo of your child? On the potty? Because being in a museum means your in a public place. So people are more than legally able to do so (morally probably on the fine line). But your of been ok if someone came up and took a photo?

That’s the other thing. These places have cctv. Do people really not care if someone somewhere has a film of their kids going to the toilet? Some places they keep it for years??

YANBU . Glad you called the mother out!

Momniscient · 07/01/2020 21:52

Yanbu. I once saw someone whip out a potty for their child to use in a busy shopping centre atrium (as I was coming out the loos myself, so it really wasn't far!) and the image has stuck with me since. I don't get it.

Nicknacky · 07/01/2020 21:55

It never crossed my mind to take a potty out with us, am I unusual in that?
