The tone of the coverage of the Reynhard Sinaga case. *Title edited by MNHQ*

Just watching tonight’s news. I do not wish to minimise the trauma suffered by the victims of Reynhard Sinaga, but I’m really struggling with the reporting of the case; even from female journalists. It seems so full of empathy and gravitas, when so many female victims go unheard.

I was amazed that someone is so off the rails they think you can have a legitimate grievance with rape victims because their court case doesn't send the right political message for your liking.

Then I saw that "fuck these rape victims, right?" gets 30% yanbu.

As someone who has consoled victims of all sorts, I think the idea of treating it like a competition is just madness.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 07/01/2020 00:15

Think that, I mean.

AutumnRose1 · 07/01/2020 00:20

Goldfish “Does anyone genuinely believe that if the victims had been female the media coverage would have been less than it would have been in this case?“

No. I think what most of us are saying is the tone would have been different. In fact, I think total media coverage of this will be less than other rapes in terms of air time, printed material etc because it is considered more unpleasant than the rape of women.

DesignedForLife · 07/01/2020 00:21

YABVU. Stop trying to make this appalling case into a feminist issue. Have some respect for the victims.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 07/01/2020 00:26

Does anyone genuinely believe that if the victims had been female the media coverage would have been less than it would have been in this case?

I genuinely believe that the media coverage would have been more disrespectful of the victims. I am delighted that the coverage has been respectful of the victims as it has been, but I would like the UK press to rise to these heights consistently from now on in all cases.

As it is, if the men raped had been universally gay, I think it would have been respectful than it has been.

The thing I noticed was that as a result of this case, Priti Patel is to investigate the classification of GHB - but this has never been suggested (or I've never head of it, happy to be corrected) after the John Worbuoys (black cab rapist) cases, or all the other single cases of women being given this drug and raped. Women have alway just been given a list of tips to "avoid getting your drink spiked" instead.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 07/01/2020 00:42

notagainnn

When in recent years has there been a rapist who has raped 190 women?

Wasn't there some cab driver who was thought to have raped that many?

aroundtheworldyet · 07/01/2020 00:44

John worboys didn’t use GHB

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 07/01/2020 00:47

I agree with OP's premise, although I think the thread title is unfortunate.

It's about the reporting.

There was no doubt about these rapes having occurred because the rapist recorded them.

I think part of the reason for the shock everyone feels, and a large part of the reason for so many victims having fallen foul of this man, is that men do not have this on their radar.

Heterosexual men, going out for a piss up, do not take account of potential rape .

Women and gay men do.

If this man had been targetting women I think he would have had a far lower success rate because most women, however drunk, would have said no thanks, I don't need a warm place to wait for a taxi, or somewhere to charge my phone, I'll just wait here for a cab.

Because we do take account of potential rape.

If that difference is taken on board, there could be a positive outcome to this .

I won't hold my breath.

aroundtheworldyet · 07/01/2020 00:47

@JamieVardysHavingAParty
Some cab driver. Really!!
Ffs.
Maybe if people took more notice of the news then there wouldn’t be idiotic threads like this

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/01/2020 00:49

I agree that the Big Men only take the problem seriously when its other men that are the victims. Suddenly its about how to rapists need to be less rapey, when we have been told for years how to make ourselves less rapable. "These men should not have been raped!" "I was raped too" "Yes but you were wearing a short skirt"

Its is, as we always knew, one rule for them and another for us.

Castoreum · 07/01/2020 00:50

It's not worse for the victims just because there were a lot of them who happened to have been raped by a single perpetrator. Rape is life-alteringly awful every single time for every single victim.

I'm being sarky. I think it's deserved, when Warboys is believed by the police to have been just as prolific.

theflushedzebra · 07/01/2020 00:54

What did John Worbuoys use, and why wasn't there an immediate Home Office investigation into the classification of that drug on his conviction, I wonder?

GHB has been being used to assault women for years - we had warnings go round when I was at University. Yet now it's classification is being investigated.

aroundtheworldyet · 07/01/2020 00:55

JamieVardysHavingAParty

sorry!! I get you.
My fault

aroundtheworldyet · 07/01/2020 00:58

John worboys used standard sedatives. Available from your doctors.

Priti Patel is just using this as some bullshit agenda. No one else had bothered in the past. She’d do the same if it were women.

One perpetrator and one drug is so much easier to deal with in media terms

If it’s thousands of perpetrators, thousands of causes then there is no SOUNDBITE

Disquieted1 · 07/01/2020 00:59

Some people on here have such a fucked up moral compass I'm amazed they find their way to the toilet.

theflushedzebra · 07/01/2020 01:00

I'm not so sure actually, but I admire your confidence.

theflushedzebra · 07/01/2020 01:00

What is the bullshit agenda you refer to btw?

aroundtheworldyet · 07/01/2020 01:02

People love easy solutions.
Man raped loads of men. Used ghb
Ban ghb EASY

men raping women on a semi regular basis is a really hard problem to solve. It’s so ingrained in our society. Our make up as humans. It’s almost an unsolvable problem.

Priti Patel isn’t clever enough to look at the bigger picture

theflushedzebra · 07/01/2020 01:03

John worboys used standard sedatives. Available from your doctors.

He raped over 100 women - women who weren't believed when they reported it to the Met Police.

On his conviction, perhaps there could have been a Home Office investigation into how easily he got hold of these sedatives?

aroundtheworldyet · 07/01/2020 01:05

@theflushedzebra
I would say her bullshit agenda is to look like she’s doing something when she’s doing nothing at all. And to do it at the point it’s the most popular with the public.

aroundtheworldyet · 07/01/2020 01:05

I think we are on the same side here. So let’s not argue.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 07/01/2020 01:06

Clarification, because it's important. The police have got 100-odd reports about Warboys. The police think there could be the same number again of women who aren't willing to come forward.
