To think we can move the Labour party back to the centre by registering on 14-16 Jan...

...if enough of us register to vote? The 48 hour window to register to vote in the leadership election has been announced as 14-16 January. I think it's worth £25 to join and have my say.

If enough of us do then perhaps we can actually get the centre left opposition that most people want and those who "reluctantly" voted Conservative can come back?

I don't know about bringing it right back to the centre, but certainly something needs to change, and I see no point in sitting around complaining about the lack of decent opposition to the Tories if you don't actually do anything about it.

I intend to join within the next few days - not 100% sure I understand the difference between joining and registering as a supporter, but I think that if I join before 20 Jan, I get a vote. Is this right?

Kotokoto · 06/01/2020 19:18

If you join between 14-16th Jan you can pay £25 to become a registered supporter and be entitled to vote.

clairethewitch70 · 06/01/2020 19:21

But who to vote for?

Justanotherlurker · 06/01/2020 19:24

Haven't they said you needed to be member before end of December.

It's quite ironic how it was just £3 to vote to flood it with pr corbyn entryism and they ramped up the price in the previous leader vote.

It's also ironic that adding restrictions onto voting (in this case via price) is something the majority of labour supporters are against in general, re following the rest of europe and proving ID.

Momentum have a firm hold on the party, from most of the momentum groups I lurk in no lessons have been learnt and they are just defaulting to at some point people will vote in labour because of x years of tories.

Cottagepieandpeas · 06/01/2020 19:27

I hope new joiners will be active members; attending branch meetings, contributing to discussions, delivering leaflets, canvassing etc. Political parties need volunteers and are always very grateful for new, enthusiastic members.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/01/2020 19:31

I have rejoined and shall vote for Keir Starmer

I did attend local meetings until Momentum took over

I hope to get involved again I feel positive about the party for the first time in years

Violetparis · 06/01/2020 19:31

New members can join and have a vote up until 20th Jan. If you don't want to join but still want a say in the leadership contest you can pay a one off fee of £25 next Tuesday/Wednesday. Who are you all planning to vote for ?

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 19:32

@clairethewitch70 well if you want Labour to move more centrally, appeal to moderate voters and be a stronger opposition then the answer could be Starmer, or Nandy... but absolutely NOT Long Bailey who is Corbyn & McDonnell's anointed successor.

OP posts:
Violetparis · 06/01/2020 19:32

I'll.be voting for Keir Starmer too, Lisa Nandy would be my second choice.

TheGoogleMum · 06/01/2020 19:33

I joined in December after the election. Want to do more next time. Who are we thinking? I am leaning towards Keir Starmer.

GinUnicorn · 06/01/2020 19:34

Keir Starmer seems the obvious choice

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 19:35

@justanotherlurker no, they held an executive meeting today and the news is supporters can join on 14-16 Jan window in order to vote.

Polling suggests Momentum's hold is not as strong as you may believe and that within the membership many previous Corbyn voters are looking to the more moderate candidates. If further new supporters join and boost the moderate vote then Corbynism and momentum could be wiped out in theory.

GeordieTerf · 06/01/2020 19:38

No thanks. Labour think that women have lady brains, so I'll go elsewhere.

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 19:38

Yes I think Kier Starmer with Nandy as second choice is the best choice.

Deputy leader election-wise I'd say Angela Rayner.

OP posts:
BaolFan · 06/01/2020 19:38

I like Jess but I think Keir will win it. Dream team would be Keir as leader and Jess as deputy.

Joined just prior to Xmas. First time I have ever joined a political party, but I was so pissed off about the poor show and this bloody pearl clutching about ideology. Arguing about who is more morally left wing doesn't help the millions of people currently suffering under Tory rule. The duty of any opposition party is to get into bloody government.

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 19:39

@baolfan unfortunately Phillips won't be eligible for deputy as they are two separate elections with two separate groups of candidates.

OP posts:
BaolFan · 06/01/2020 19:40

And I am not a fan (understatement) of Labour's position on AWS, but step one is trying to get things back to a more moderate and achievable and electable position; the average person on the high street does not believe that women have penises.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/01/2020 19:41

Why would anyone vote for Rebecca Long Bailey and Angela Rayner - neither are particularly articulate, absolutely terrible in interviews and stick to sound bites they would be made to looks utterly useless leading the party

Even if you are more to the left surely there is someone else to vote for

BaolFan · 06/01/2020 19:42

@WarwickLife Pity as I think they'd be a good combo.

I wonder whether Long-Bailey will launch her campaign this week? Interesting to see what it will be, given that she's been positioned as the chosen one for Corbyn's legacy - which is a hospital pass if ever there was one.

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 19:43

I'm already registered, don't know who I'll vote for yet. Leaning towards Starmer

SpeedofaSloth · 06/01/2020 19:45

I have just joined today, I want to vote for Kier Starmer.

Violetparis · 06/01/2020 19:56

I think Momentum is estimated at around 10% of members so not as widespread as many believe. I joined Labour soon after Corbyn was elected for the second time, I liked him because he was anti austerity and anti nuclear weapons. I have never been bothered about ideology, I like who I like, this time the candidate I like is Keir Starmer. I also know several other Corbyn supporters who will be voting for Starmer. I'd be happy with Angela Raynor as deputy too, though don't know much about the other deputy candidates.

WwfLeopard · 06/01/2020 19:57

I became a member yesterday, 3 quid for the year b’cos I’m a student. I’m thinking nandy. Up to Sunday I thought Phillips, then she starting going on about rejoining to eu :/

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 19:57

@Enthusiasm Of course I agree re RLB but Rayner has slightly distanced herself from her flat mate this week, and of the deputy candidates she is one of the strongest. What deputy candidate would you suggest?

OP posts:
WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 19:59

@wwf yes, that's really going to alienate a lot of people.
