To think we can move the Labour party back to the centre by registering on 14-16 Jan...

...if enough of us register to vote? The 48 hour window to register to vote in the leadership election has been announced as 14-16 January. I think it's worth £25 to join and have my say.

If enough of us do then perhaps we can actually get the centre left opposition that most people want and those who "reluctantly" voted Conservative can come back?

Why bother? Labour have no right to my vote. If they want to be unreconstructed Marxists, I will vote lib dem.

Buttonmoonb4tea · 06/01/2020 20:02

I'm leaning towards Starner also. I liked Corbyn, but he wasn't electable in hindsight. Starmer is electable. His specialty is human rights. He'll rip Doris to shreds, especially now it looks like the whole Trump/Iran thing has blown up and looks like the UK will be dragged into it.

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 20:02

WarwickLife I like Rayner and intend to vote her as deputy leader (either Starmer or Nandy for leader, thoughts anyone? I think Starmer has the better chance). She should distance herself from RLB any chance she gets, she's so robotic and no one wants a 'continuity candidate'...

clairethewitch70 · 06/01/2020 20:02

@WarwickLife - As a Tory, if I joined RLB would get my vote

Rainallnight · 06/01/2020 20:04

I joined at the weekend. Planning to vote for Jess Phillips. Am a big fan.

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 20:08

@ButterflyRuns I'm with you on those choices. I don't think Nandy has had enough of an opportunity to showcase her leadership skills yet, whereas Starmer is solid. Therefore I'm going to wait with interest and see how the campaign plays out. I suspect Nandy will be knocked out in the earlier rounds leaving Starmer but I think they'll both be on my ballot paper as 1 & 2 preference- just not sure in which order yet.

Polling suggests Momentum's hold is not as strong as you may believe and that within the membership many previous Corbyn voters are looking to the more moderate candidates. If further new supporters join and boost the moderate vote then Corbynism and momentum could be wiped out in theory.

I would like to see this polling, so far it is text book pulling up the ladder like they did in the previous leadership election. Corbyn hasn't stood down and some even want corbyn to stay on, if not then get his next in line like Rebecca Wrong Daily, or failing that Rayner, some are seriously hoping 2 left shoes Abbot stands.

It is a shit show at the minute, the fact this post is needed to promote entryism should highlight that.

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 20:08

Ok well please don't do that and live up to your username @clairethewitch 😉

TheFuckingDogs · 06/01/2020 20:09

Starmer with Raynor as deputy

WarwickLife · 06/01/2020 20:12

@justanotherlurker not sure of the overall point you're making. Abbot has already ruled herself out- she's not that stupid.

There were loads of articles about it in the Sunday papers and it's not looking like a given for Momentum at all.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/01/2020 20:14

Rayner has been a puppet for Corbyn the only reason she was ever a shadow minister is because Corbyn at one time had so few MP’s that supported him. I just don’t think she is ready for such a position she isn't experienced enough. Ive never once heard her interviewed where she hasn’t come across as being out of her depth

It’s a shame Lisa Nandy hasn’t put herself forward for deputy. I like Yvette Cooper if she puts herself forward

Do we want a Blair/Prescott pairing again statesman like leader and man/woman of the people

Justanotherlurker · 06/01/2020 20:15

I joined at the weekend. Planning to vote for Jess Phillips. Am a big fan.

Too much baggage on Jess, they can just show clips with her laughing at the mens day situation, without any context she is on the back foot and not going to win back the working class that has abandoned labour.

I understand the wider context before anyone jumps on me, labour would use relevant clips just the same, it's just an open goal. People are just thinking a midlands voice is just what is needed to bring back the working class, Jess with her IDPOL isn't what is needed at this point, IDPOL is dead at this point, it needs a new angle.

RockinHippy · 06/01/2020 20:17

It never left just left of centre. You've either fallen for the media bull or you are comparing them to tge now fat tight wing Tory party, which by comparison makes them look like out & out commies. They are not

Mockers2020Vision · 06/01/2020 20:19

Save your £25 and sign up for reduced fee membership at £2 a month then cancel.

I'm staying resolutely Doris Day Que Sera Sera about the whole thing: If the Labour Party wants to consign itself to electoral oblivion, the n I will wave it Bye Bye.

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 20:20

Jess Phillips is not going to do anything for Labour - why anyone would vote for her is beyond me.

And I agree @WarwickLife, I suppose at the end of it all preferences aside, the contest is likely going to end up being between RLB (unelectable and pretty scripted) and Starmer (a capable leader and charismatic speaker)

NoWordForFluffy · 06/01/2020 20:20

I've joined to vote for Starmer. He'll absolutely destroy BoZo at PMQs; it'll be an utter delight to watch!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/01/2020 20:21

I think it’s patronising that just because you are normal/working class that will appeal to working class voters

It’s policies that need to change and having a solid leadership regardless of their background - millions of working class voters have just voted for someone who represents the elite

kinsss · 06/01/2020 20:27

@Mockers2020Vision

Completely agree. Electoral oblivion as you so eloquently put it, is for fanatics not realists.

Justanotherlurker · 06/01/2020 20:28

Wanting to nationalise industries at below market value, target the 'rich', pretend the NHS was up for sale, the only people who have fallen for the media are those who like to pretend Corbyn is just following nordic models with extra steps to how uneducated they are to pretend the tories are some far right uprising.

ASimpleLampoon · 06/01/2020 20:29

Just join the fucking lib dems.

Violetparis · 06/01/2020 20:30

Does anyone know if there are likely to be any more candidates coming forward (other than RLB) for the leadership and for the deputy leadership role ? Like others have said, I would have liked Lisa Nandy to have gone for the deputy role.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/01/2020 20:33

Why would I want to join the LibDems

I want to support a centre left party - that is what Labour was set up to be and the only time it has been elected in the last 40 years

Justanotherlurker · 06/01/2020 20:42

It’s policies that need to change and having a solid leadership regardless of their background - millions of working class voters have just voted for someone who represents the elite

Exactly, some are just lurching to a northern voice and conflating someone like Jess into that mold. The fact we have an active thread for open entryism whilst pretending it is infested with tory bots should highlight how out of touch not only this forum is but labour in general.

Someone is needed to rid the labour party of the hard left/momentum types, Labour doesn't want to get rid of FPTP so it's going to be a long 4 years to rid the party of those who unironnically want 2 left shoes abbot as leader or corbyn crone but with a vagina in RLB. The introspection hasn't even started yet

Justanotherlurker · 06/01/2020 20:46

Just join the fucking lib dems.

This polite response to 2 years of 'just fuck of and vote tory' has just led to Labour having the heaviest defeat in living memory.

Trying to be this ideological pure is straight out of momentum, you are just thinking you will automatically win an election at some point, you thought it would happen after 9 years of tory government and you lost the labour heartlands.

ElloBrian · 06/01/2020 20:47

All of these people seem seriously overrated to me.
