To not understand Tracey Barlow's story on Coronation Street

I haven't watched it regularly in years but when I did, Tracey was a convicted and vicious murderer who got out of prison on a technicality. Everyone knew she had cold bloodedly and calculatingly killed her boyfriend for her own means.

I have caught the odd episode over the years when staying with my mum, and she seems to have just picked up her life where she let off, part of the street again, back in the bosom of her family, full custody of her young daughter. Now she's apparently married to Steve and running a local business.

Surely in real life she'd have been run out of Weatherfield, had the Mac Donald's put up every obstacle possible to prevent her seeing Amy, and been shunned by her family.

Why is thís vile woman not living under an assumed name somewhere, with a series of drug pushing boyfriends, crap jobs and a couple of fur kids taken into care?

Even in the crazy world of soaps her story is ridiculous.

Bobby Ewing’s dream ruined soaps for me

How could I ever take them seriously again

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 05/01/2020 08:36

YANBU but then so many soap stories are ridiculous and the characters have massive personality changes too.

Clawdy · 05/01/2020 08:39

Yes, it is an unlikely, typical soap story, but I think the fact that the boyfriend was abusive and unpleasant meant that people were more ready to forgive and forget. In a soap (and real life, too, to some extent ) everyone likes to see a villain get his comeuppance!

Misscromwellrocks · 05/01/2020 08:42

But he wasn't abusive, that was the point. Tracey set him up, making out he'd been beating her up, abusing her etc and then pleaded s we lf defence. The jury didn't buy her lies and neither did her parents in the end.

He treated his previous partner, Shelley dreadfully though, controlling her every move, cutting her off from friends, telling her she was fat and ugly, till she could barely leave the house. She escaped in the end, but he was portrayed as a horrible man.

Newname1978 · 05/01/2020 08:53

A couple of fur kids Crown Grin

Misscromwellrocks · 05/01/2020 08:56

Yeah further kids I meant.

I remember him being horrible to Shelley. But not to Tracey who was a nasty and unpleasant piece of work herself and well able to stand up for herself.

Charlie Stubbs was a tool and deserved it. I love Tracey.

Rockbird · 05/01/2020 08:58

I also haven't watched it in years but caught an ep at my parents this week and she was in bed with a woman. Since when was she bi?

SerenDippitty · 05/01/2020 08:58

I haven’t watched in years but do recall Tracey had a kidney transplant when she was young, the donor (implausibly) being Samir, her mother’s Tunisian husband that she met on holiday, who was murdered by yobs on his way to the hospital. Tracey seems to have enjoyed excellent health ever since!

melj1213 · 05/01/2020 09:01

Half of the street's residents have been involved with, if not committed, at least one murder so I wouldnt single Tracey out tbf.

I'm surprised they havent installed a police station at the end of the street considering how many crimes happen in such a small vicinity

Misscromwellrocks · 05/01/2020 09:03

She smashed Charlie across the head with a statue because he'd cheated on her, and spent months planning it. When he ended up in a coma instead of dead, she was prepared to sneak into the hospital and finish the job.

I.don't watch corrie anymore as it's just ridiculous imo, I do watch classic corrie which is much better ,incidentally Seren Deirdre has just jetted off to.Morrroco......

PollyPelargonium52 · 05/01/2020 09:08

Tracey Barlow has nice glowing skin however. Slightly off point but I did observe this the other day. She just doesn't seem to age. Unlike Kevin Webster!

dayswithaY · 05/01/2020 09:09

She also tried to trick Roy Cropper into thinking they had slept together and that he was Amy's father. Roy and Hayley actually took the baby from Tracey (probably for money) to raise as their own. They called her Patience and she stayed with them in the flat above the cafe until Tracey changed her mind. I only remember this as I had a baby the same age and would avidly watch while breastfeeding.

Misscromwellrocks · 05/01/2020 09:18

Yes I remember the Roy Cropper storyline.

I watched a few episodes of classic corrie last year and found it very difficult to reconcile young Tracey with the vile person she became.

She was a very ordinary, well looked after and much loved child who showed no sociopathic tendencies. Yet a few years living in London and she turns into Cruells de Ville.

MsVestibule · 05/01/2020 09:25

I think the thing that made me go 'whaaaaaaaaat???' on Corrie was when John (Fizz's teacher boyfriend) jumped from a 6 storey high hospital roof and walked away 🙄. Until then, even if the storylines were implausible, they were possible.

I haven't watched it for a few years now but the merry-go-round of partners (I see them on the TV mags when I'm shopping and my 90yo friend keeps me updated!) is unbelievable.

MsVestibule · 05/01/2020 09:25

That's what that fancy London does to you 🤷‍♀️.

Clawdy · 05/01/2020 09:28

I remember Tracy being born on Corrie, Deirdre was calling her Lynette, but her husband registered her as Tracy!

x2boys · 05/01/2020 09:33

Possibly her personality changed when she changed her head?😂

MatildaTheCat · 05/01/2020 09:34

Tracey never recovered from the time that Deirdre sent her upstairs and she wasn’t allowed back down for several years. Honestly, she even looked different when she finally re-emerged. Grin

Remember, Coronation St is probably the most dangerous street in the entire world when you consider the number of murders, fires, fatal accidents and abusive relationships that have occurred there in the last 30 years. Tracey is probably in the right place and very soon will find her new slot in the criminal world. (Possibly she already has, I gave up a few years ago!)

Chocolatemouse84 · 05/01/2020 09:38

I used to enjoy watching emmerdale and coronation street but in the past year or so the stories have become more and more ridiculous. You used to be able to loosely relate some of the stories to real life but now they are too far fetched.
I saw something about Gary in coronation street the other night (POSSIBLE SPOILER!) and he seems to have gone from a bit of a jack the lad to now being some master criminal murderer?!!

MooMummy12 · 05/01/2020 09:39

@MsVestibule London?

Queenoftheashes · 05/01/2020 09:46

@Rockbird since her stint in prison apparently

maras2 · 05/01/2020 09:46

That Deidre/Samir storyline is about to start on 'Classic Corrie' on ITV3 afternoons.
She's just about to go to Tunisia for a holiday. Grin
