To not understand Tracey Barlow's story on Coronation Street

I haven't watched it regularly in years but when I did, Tracey was a convicted and vicious murderer who got out of prison on a technicality. Everyone knew she had cold bloodedly and calculatingly killed her boyfriend for her own means.

I have caught the odd episode over the years when staying with my mum, and she seems to have just picked up her life where she let off, part of the street again, back in the bosom of her family, full custody of her young daughter. Now she's apparently married to Steve and running a local business.

Surely in real life she'd have been run out of Weatherfield, had the Mac Donald's put up every obstacle possible to prevent her seeing Amy, and been shunned by her family.

Why is thís vile woman not living under an assumed name somewhere, with a series of drug pushing boyfriends, crap jobs and a couple of fur kids taken into care?

Even in the crazy world of soaps her story is ridiculous.

Don't do it Deirdre!

@Queenoftheashes I must have stopped watching when she was inside then. That pinpoints when I left the show Grin

TheSquitz · 05/01/2020 10:02

In Friday's episode, when it was suggested that Tracey might be homophobic, Steve replied (something along the lines of) "No way, Tracey's always been live and let live unless you're Charlie Stubbs ". It made me laugh at the time, but thinking about it, it's pretty shocking! Tracey has softened a lot in recent years though and I do love her scenes with Mary!

Corrie is a load of old crap. Eastenders is the superior soap by far.

MsVestibule · 05/01/2020 10:05

@ MooMummy12 I was just referencing the OP's comment (at 9.18) about her being a lovely girl before she went to London!

MooMummy12 · 05/01/2020 10:14

@MsVestibule I didn't see that one so didn't realise she went to London ☺️ Thankyou

StillCoughingandLaughing · 05/01/2020 10:25

Yet a few years living in London and she turns into Cruells de Ville.

London is something of a den of iniquity if you believe the Corrie scriptwriters. Todd Grimshaw also turned evil after living there.

"No way, Tracey's always been live and let live unless you're Charlie Stubbs".

It is quite bizarre really that Tracy’s murderous past is now a punchline! It’s also been largely forgotten that a fire she started killed two other people. (See also Kerry and Amy in Emmerdale, whose horror and guilt at having accidentally killed Frank seems to have disappeared thanks to a couple of nights on the piss.)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/01/2020 10:32

She implicated poor Becky in her lies too.
When Tracey was pregnant with twins ( IIRC Steve's) she claimed Becky pushed her down the stairs causing her to miscarry ..............until someone ( either a taxi driver or might have been Becky's new bloke) remembered taking her to the Hospital at least a few days before the alledged stair push...when she was in fact miscarrying Sad )

Honeyroar · 05/01/2020 10:35

Melj is right. You’re not even allowed to reside on Coronation St unless you’ve got a dead body in the garden.

iklboo · 05/01/2020 10:38

I don't watch soaps anymore. They used to be at least slightly relatable to people. Now it's just ridiculous misery porn pile-ons competing to see who can be the most unbelievable.

SusanneLinder · 05/01/2020 10:42

Haven't watched Corrie in years..😂. Is Rita, Emily, Audrey and Ken still in it?
And what happened to Norris?
I do remember Tracy being in prison, and a fight with Steve over the baby, is she married to him now? Also remember Deirdre being in prison and the whole "Free the Weatherfield one". Was that not discussed in Westminster or something ridiculous?

Poetryinaction · 05/01/2020 10:49

Charlie cheated with Shelley, Emma and Maria (I googled it). He also emotionally abused and manipulated Shelley, Maria and Tracey. But he met his match in Tracey.
She is an interesting character and I am really glad she is back on the street.

Misscromwellrocks · 05/01/2020 10:54

Sally is another character whose personality changed significantly across the years. In classic corrie last year she was an extremely easy going, kind hearted person who just wanted to be married to Kevin and have children of her own.

Then they turned her into a social climbing snob ☹️

I used to have a thing for Traceys dad, Ray Langton. (was that his name?)

Poetryinaction · 05/01/2020 11:02

Sally is still kind.

Equanimitas · 05/01/2020 11:03

Remember, Coronation St is probably the most dangerous street in the entire world when you consider the number of murders, fires, fatal accidents and abusive relationships that have occurred there in the last 30 years.

Well, unless you live in Albert Square or Emmerdale ...

I'd forgotten the kidney transplant storyline. Having checked, I see they don't normally last more than 20 years, so she's a bit of a medical miracle.

SerenDippitty · 05/01/2020 11:07

But he wasn't abusive, that was the point. Tracey set him up, making out he'd been beating her up, abusing her etc and then pleaded s we lf defence. The jury didn't buy her lies and neither did her parents in the end.

I thought Tracey murdered Charlie because she basically wanted his house. She was refusing to move out of it even though he’d finished with her.

Misscromwellrocks · 05/01/2020 11:10

She definitely wasn't some vulnerable young woman who killed in self defence.

I also remember her leaving baby Amy alone in a flat so she could go off out on a date with someone.

@Misscromwellrocks

It's gone the same way as all the other soaps. Unbelievable and stupid storylines. From all the murders and ridiculous shit that happens in one small suburban area, to the fact that everyone who in the street, works, socialises, and dates within the street too (or within 5 minutes walk of it.)

60 years ago (when Corrie started) it WAS a bit like that, (everyone knew each other, lived near each other, dated locally, and people worked closeby,) but in 2020 it's nothing like that anymore.

Also Tracy is into ladies now. Have you not watched it recently?!

roisinagusniamh · 05/01/2020 12:01

Hilarious thread.
I used to love Corrie. Watched it since the 70s with my Granny but, it's just impossible to watch now because no one stays true to character.

keepingbees · 05/01/2020 12:11

Every storyline in it these days is unbelievable and ridiculous.
I watch some of the classic corries and they're a lot more entertaining and watchable without the constant deaths, murders and misery.
I know it's a soap and suspended belief but even so.

SerenDippitty · 05/01/2020 12:22

I used to love it up until the time of the tram crash. It used to be really well written and acted with lots of humour. It’s just rubbish now. Tony Warren would be spinning in his grave.

roisinagusniamh · 05/01/2020 12:32

The sad thing is that it was originally written and produced to represent life in the North of England.....it is so far from life in any part of England now that it has become laughable!

TheSquitz · 05/01/2020 12:52

Tracey also sold baby Amy to Roy & Hayley who wanted to call her Patience.

Dustarr73 · 05/01/2020 13:08

I dont really watch it now.But the thing that surprises me is how the hell did Steve get 6 women to marry him.

I remember the twins storyline, and poor Becky.Who got the last laugh cause she jetted off somewhere with her new fella. While Steve realised Tracy lied and stood there looking like a muppet.

But he still married Tracy years later. Why?

Honeyroar · 05/01/2020 13:28

Steve got six women to marry him because it’s obligatory to marry your neighbour on Coronation st!
