Friend has just revealed that when she makes a stew/curry/casserole, anything that can be put in the oven for a few hours and cook on low heat, she would do that and go out for a few hours.

I can’t imagine doing that, anything could happen. What if you got caught up, run over/injured honestly anything could happen and nobody would know you have the oven on 😳.

@Mascarponeandwine you turn your fridge and freezer off?

spingly · 04/01/2020 23:10

@Mascarponeandwine and boiler? I think that needs electricity and the hon, which uses electric to ignite?

What caused your fire?

Dearymeop · 04/01/2020 23:10

@Mascarponeandwine sorry to hear all you’ve been through. I haven’t been through it myself but do know a few people who have. People are so naïve and just choose to make fun of the people who have had different experiences or concerns. Flowers

Dearymeop · 04/01/2020 23:12

@spingly I’m sure she doesn’t because you can’t really avoid having those on so I’m sure she meant she just turns everything else off to minimise the risk of a fire. Yes you can’t turn 100% of things off but if you can turn 90% off then that provides reassurance and risk limitation

spingly · 04/01/2020 23:14

@Dearymeop well I've tagged @Mascarponeandwine so shall we wait for her to answer?

Mascarponeandwine · 04/01/2020 23:15

Ah to be fair, not the fridge. No freezer.

Mascarponeandwine · 04/01/2020 23:16

Including the sky box and the router.

spingly · 04/01/2020 23:18

@Mascarponeandwine ok I understand, what caused your fire?

Lillyhatesjaz · 04/01/2020 23:18

I have a gas oven and I wouldn't go out and leave that in fact I check it every now and then if I am in another room. I leave my slow cooker without worrying.

beverlymarsh · 04/01/2020 23:19

Would never leave oven or washing machine on in an empty house. Don’t have a dishwasher or tumble dryer but wouldn’t leave those on either. Randomly switch most stuff off at the wall when we go on holiday.

Mascarponeandwine · 04/01/2020 23:20

Leaving stuff on like appliances or charging equipment is one of those low risk high stakes strategies. The chances of the shit hitting the fan are small but fucking hell, the devastation if you do happen to be that one in a million is the stuff of nightmares.

ClappyFlappy · 04/01/2020 23:20

I would leave the oven or slow cooker on. Not washing machine though. I think I read something from fire brigade that said that was not recommended.

beverlymarsh · 04/01/2020 23:21

I live near a fire station and all the fire engines have adverts on the side warning to switch ovens off if you go out.

Mascarponeandwine · 04/01/2020 23:22

Bit too outing to say, but it’s something that most people keep in their house.

msmith501 · 04/01/2020 23:23

I do it all the time. I also leave the central heating on when I'm out or the freezer or fridge. And sometimes the washing machine. Or the house alarm. Etc. All electrical hinge are slightly susceptible to catching fire. The oven on the other hand is er... heat proof and at the worst will produce badly burnt food.

msmith501 · 04/01/2020 23:25

Hinge = things *

cheezy · 04/01/2020 23:25

I very often do this, even without a timer.

Being “horrified” is a bit of an overreaction.

It’s not something I do often but I would nip out for a while with something in SC/oven. My oven itself has a slow cooker setting and a timer. Like a PP I wouldn’t do it with a gas oven as a gas oven contains a naked flame, whether that’s irrational I don’t know!

Iwant2move · 04/01/2020 23:27

Another Aga owner here. The three ovens and the lamb reviving oven are always on.
Before I had the aga, I would cook stews all day on gas mark 1 or 2 and go out.

Dearymeop · 04/01/2020 23:28

@spingly I didn’t even have a go at you for asking the question, I just answered your question because it’s pretty much common sense that didn’t need an answer just from one person. Bet you thought you were very clever. Jog on

spingly · 04/01/2020 23:30

@Dearymeop yours was a personal attack, name calling......
