To report someone who has a pitbull?

IAmNotLego · 04/01/2020 19:03

They boast about it being a pitbull, in IRL and on Facebook. Told me they weren't going to have it neutered (so it would continue to grow as big as possible), but had registered it. Surely it would need to be neutered? As part of this?

They told me they have it muzzled in public.

Second conversation. They've said it attacked 2 dogs, so has now been neutered.

I've seen the dog out in public without a muzzle and off lead..

I'm sure some will tell me to mind my own business. But I'd feel awful if something happened to another dog/animal or a child and it could have been prevented.

These posts aren’t even advice for op just generic dog arguments. It’s really simple, you can’t report something you have no facts about. Who’s dogs did it attack? Are the dogs alive? Why didn’t the other dogs owners report it? Is it actually a pitbull or is the owner just a show off? Where does the dog reside? Have you physically seen this dog? Police and courts go by facts (or they should) this hear say shouldn’t even get a look in. There’s bigger things for police to deal with than a dog that can’t possibly be that dangerous as people get very defensive of their dogs if their dog was injured or died they would’ve kicked up a fuss. Unless they too were irresponsible owners.

It's this negative attitude that goes around all these type of breed the Pitbull, staffie and bullies people think that the only thing that's on their minds is attack. I have a staffie and a doberman mix plus 4 cats ( which some folk think you can't have with these dogs ) and let off the lead the staffie stays at my side while the mix runs about daft but when they see another dog/dogs when told to stay they stay.
There is a reason why the Kennel club says that the staffies are one of the best dogs to have if have kids these breeds where bred to when the handler went into the pit to collect their dog after fighting it wouldn't turn on them. If we would be able to determine how many dog bites or attacks happened per year then the amount by these type dogs it might shock some people, the breed that I call devil dogs are the Lhasa apso as pups they're happy wee things but after that they're aggressive snappy wee things speaking to vets and they will probably say yes we have a lot of problems with that breed (the vets I have spoken to have said this).
If the dog is brought up and trained right all should be well loved family members but don't tar and feather these breeds I bet if you found one not in a household who want a status symbol but in a loving home you would see the real happy loving dog

Mommy2tdkd · 05/01/2020 13:25

Its the owners not the breed guys i got a 6 week old pit bull puppy when my daughter was barely 2 that dog is more protective of my child than i am they are best friends now my daughter is 12 and our pit just turned 10 best dog we have ever owned just goes to show its all in how you treat them and train them they really are very intelligent

Thatagain · 05/01/2020 13:46

Why are so many people saying that they have seen, own a pit bull. Don't you know how rare they are? I have told people that the dog they own is a mungrul and they still claim it to be a pit bull WTF. If you can find an American dogs home and adopt a pit bull they will come with a certificate authentication of their dna. I have a dna certificate for mine before the ban became law. Ok so maybe a staffy is our new pit bull in this country.

And you, are the reason there's the ridiculous stigma about pit bulls.
Now yes, there are bulls out there that are vicious and dangerous. But that can be said about ANY breed.
It's all about how the dog. Is raised.
I have a almost 2 year old Blue Nose Put Bull. And I'll tell ya right now. She is the sweetest dog I've ever owned. Ive owned her since she was 6 weeks old. There is absolutely NOTHING scary, or vicious about her, besides the fact that she's a pit bull, and people's stupidity.

Ccl99 · 05/01/2020 15:24

Their not illegal and who ever said yea they are obviously dumb and dont know how to read laws😂, don’t report unless the dog harms u just keep minding yourself tbh

OverByYer · 05/01/2020 15:30

It is illegal to own or breed Pitbulls in the UK

If it was friendly and under control I would say no.

But as it's attacked other dogs I would report.

The child argument is ridiculous though, there is no correlation between dog aggression and human whatsoever.
They are two entirely separate problem behaviours.

Bull breeds overall are known for often being dog intolerant so no surprises really that is maturing to be dog intolerant.

They are also famous for their exceptional friendliness and tolerance towards people.

There is no link between human aggression and dog aggression.

Also, the neutering argument is also nonsense.
Neutering before maturity actually often results in taller, leggier dogs.
I suspect he is being kept entire for breeding.

pinkstripeycat · 05/01/2020 15:41

Pitbulls definitely NOT legal in the UK. Both the ownership and breeding of pit bulls is banned in the UK due to the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991.

Republic of Ireland
Under Irish law American pit bull terriers must be lead by someone at least 16 years of age, kept on a short strong lead, be muzzled and wear a collar bearing the name and address of their owner in public at all times

travellover · 05/01/2020 15:49

"If you can prove a dog's safe, despite it being a banned breed, then you can get a certificate of exemption.
This means you can keep it, but you have to get special insurance.
You've also got to be over 16, and keep the dog muzzled in public."

Just found that via research on the bbc - apparently there's a loophole for banned dogs. So this person may not actually be doing anything wrong Smile

Ferretyone · 05/01/2020 16:11

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes – and the squat, muscular pit bull terrier, with its sharp row of teeth, is more than a little controversial. Both the ownership and breeding of pit bulls is banned in the UK due to the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991.

If its owner has the animal legally then - paradoxically - a court must have decided it's not a pit bull!

If you can do so safely and confidentially I would report so that "someone" checks and - if needed - removes

Any dog can turn, it's not just about the owner and how it's raised. It's the damage they cause of they do turn. I had a shih tzu that was soft as anything until his personality changed overnight and he snapped at our daughter. The vets established he had a brain tumour. I would much rather save a child from an attacking shih tzu than a pitbull.

powpowp50 · 05/01/2020 16:17

Wow...I've read over these messages and the people who would report a person's pet without knowing its temperment just because of breed is crazy to me. I've had pits my whole life since 3yrs old and I'm 45 now and they are the most caring and loyal breeds. True forgivers! The breed should not be condemned, however, irresponsible owners should be.

adaline · 05/01/2020 16:17

@OverByYer @pinkstripeycat it's actually perfectly legal to own a pitbull in the UK so long as you follow certain criteria. The same goes for the other three "banned" dogs on the list.

Dogs must be neutered, muzzled in public and kept on a short lead. You must also be able to prove that your dog has a good temperament. If your dog is seized and found to be dangerous then it will be PTS. Likewise if you don't follow the required criteria, the dog will be PTS.

Both the ownership and breeding of pit bulls is banned in the UK due to the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991.

This is only the case if a court of law has deemed your dog to be truly dangerous. Otherwise, it's perfectly legal to keep them so long as the criteria set out by the courts are followed.

Lovely private message received from yourkidsnotimportant in response to my entirely serious (not) message about shooting said dog:

This message is in regards to you advocating in favor of shooting a dog without provocation. You are a piece of shit person. I hope you watch your shit kids die a slow painful death after being violently raped. Never forget how awful of a person you are. I'd love to piss on your grave. Kill yourself.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 05/01/2020 16:31

Oh my god that's horrific, what an awful thing to say 😳

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 05/01/2020 16:32

I hope you report that Custard, jesus the more I read it the more upsetting it is.
