To report someone who has a pitbull?

IAmNotLego · 04/01/2020 19:03

They boast about it being a pitbull, in IRL and on Facebook. Told me they weren't going to have it neutered (so it would continue to grow as big as possible), but had registered it. Surely it would need to be neutered? As part of this?

They told me they have it muzzled in public.

Second conversation. They've said it attacked 2 dogs, so has now been neutered.

I've seen the dog out in public without a muzzle and off lead..

I'm sure some will tell me to mind my own business. But I'd feel awful if something happened to another dog/animal or a child and it could have been prevented.

I know someone with a very well trained dog whom could be argued is a pit bull. They’re the most responsible dog owner you could meet.
I’d ask around training and why did it have a scuffle. I’ve been there and seen other dogs start on my friends and if it was about potential hers would hands down win. The collie in this case went for it and hers remained controlled. I’d ask into it. Make your opinion from that.

Nothanks1 · 06/01/2020 22:24

@ScrimshawTheSecond nobody is doubting dog attacks happen and dog attacks can kill. I was questioning a random post about somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody who had a dog that may or may not have been a pitbull who killed their owner and they were an absolute angel up until then... turns out it was a little fabricated based on hearsay and a desperation to perpetuate the pitbull aggression myth...

Fenbob · 06/01/2020 22:32

If this dog has attacked dogs etc why has nobody reported it already ? And people I have seen with dogs off the lead have regulary gone for my dogs and not a "pit bull" in sight, it's old school to say every dog which is bigger and stockier than your own is a dangerous dog, just because you have seen a picture of one somewhere, all dogs can be a potential killer from Yorkis to Great Danes, was this particular incident local?

CustardDream · 06/01/2020 23:57

Arsenic-laced sausage. Put it out of its misery.

(The owner that is).

Angrywife · 07/01/2020 00:08

Having done dangerous dog training with the police, we were told that there is no "pit bull" breed persay, but many pit bull type breeds.
That said, a dangerous dog is a dangerous dog, it doesn't matter if it's a Jack Russell or an American bulldog, it needs reporting.

justilou1 · 07/01/2020 00:13

Absofuckinglutely report them

justilou1 · 07/01/2020 00:26

Sorry - posted too soon. I have a Shiloh Shepherd. She is huge - weighs 46kgs. She was bought and trained to be an assistance dog to help with my child’s anxiety. She was attacked by two HUGE (bigger than her) unleashed pit bulls in the park (signs everywhere stating that dogs must be on-leash at all times, of course!) opposite us (mine was on a lead, with an easy-walker harness so my son could walk her.) I was standing 2m from my then, scrawny 10 year old son who refused to let go of her lead and I couldn’t get to either of them to help. She put herself between him and the other two dogs, but didn’t know how to fight back to defend herself. Now she is relaxed and happy at home, but is petrified of all dogs and I can’t even walk her. (All that training and expense gone to waste!!!) *The very next day, that same dickhead was throwing a ball for his dogs through a mother and baby group having a picnic on blankets. Luckily the police came very quickly as they had had reports about these dogs previously and took them away! BUT it wasn’t the dogs’ fault. They were unregistered, unneutered, untrained, etc. The owner was as feral and as uncaring as you can imagine and had another one within weeks. (Turns out dickhead had bought them to be fighting dogs - also illegal here in Aus, btw)

Rachel709 · 07/01/2020 00:31

They are not illegal but I think it's illegal to breed them anymore. Might be required to wear a muzzle by law.

cuparfull · 07/01/2020 00:43

If the owners are bigging up the dog.... they are irresponsible owners. Why would you do that?
If they are allowing a dog which has purportedly attacked twice to roam unmuzzled .....they are irresponsible owners.
You know the saying...."it only takes good people to turn aside for evil to prevail." Do the right thing and report, let competent people make the judgement for public safety.

Banned dogs

In the UK, it’s against the law to own certain types of dog. These are the:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro

Index of Exempted Dogs (IED)

If your dog is banned but the court thinks it’s not a danger to the public, it may put it on the IED and let you keep it.

You’ll be given a Certificate of Exemption. This is valid for the life of the dog.

Your dog must be:

  • neutered
  • microchipped
  • kept on a lead and muzzled at all times when in public
  • kept in a secure place so it cannot escape

As the owner, you must:

  • take out insurance against your dog injuring other people
  • be aged over 16
  • show the Certificate of Exemption when asked by a police officer or council dog warden, either at the time or within 5 days
  • let the IED know if you change address, or your dog dies

tabulahrasa · 07/01/2020 01:07

“She was attacked by two HUGE (bigger than her) unleashed pit bulls in the park”

See, that’s one of the issues with deciding that breed is an issue over anything else...

APBTs or any breed or crosses commonly regarded as pit bulls are nowhere near that size, most of them are half the size of your dog...

So while those dogs were clearly out of control and should obviously never have been loose attacking your dog, they’re not pit bulls - so legislation covering pit bulls or pitbull types would never cover them. It’s just dangerous dog laws that would deal with them.

Mummyandpsycho · 07/01/2020 02:13

God my sister's ex used to lie about their pits being vicious all the time. Softest most loving dogs I have ever met. People bullshit to make them look big. I mean they don't look hard or big but they like to think they are. I mean unless you have hard proof mind your own business. Sick of seeing people saying ooh that's a banned dog, those dogs are evil. Nah it's the owners that should be put down not the poor dog.

JKScot4 · 07/01/2020 02:18

A lot of misinformation here regards BSL, there is no such breed as pitbull it’s a generic term to cover bull breeds of a size and appearance. This law is a very unjust and unfair law that a dog is judged on its appearance rather than anything it’s done.
@adaline they are classed as illegal breed and ownership is only allowed if taken through the exemption process.
Please do not report the dog based on boasting and gossip, a dog being seized is an horrendous thing for dog and owner and exemption is very expensive.

JKScot4 · 07/01/2020 02:23

If pp could possibly not post ‘oh I think’ , Breed Specific Legislation is a hideous law, outdated and not fit for purpose. If you are going to comment at least be informed regards the law and the process of exemption.
There are wonderful organisation who are campaigning to have BSL repealed and support owners of seized dogs.
Whatever your opinion on a breed of dog, just pause and think how you’d feel if your family dog was seized by the police purely because a ndn reported them because of how they looked.

justilou1 · 07/01/2020 03:00

Totally agree about the owners being neutered, muzzled and/or PTS, but they apparently have rights....Usually these idiots go on to get another dog and create the same problems again and again. (And dare I say it, breed problematic children too...) it’s the small children and elderly who are injured, scarred and killed, and the animals themselves that suffer.

That was done by a Jack Russell.
Looks pretty savage to me.

EaglesDen · 07/01/2020 05:50

Sounds like these people have no business with a dog of any breed. All dogs can and will bite given specific circumstances.

Quietlycrazy1 · 07/01/2020 08:04

I’ll tell you what gets to me. Not only are these idiot owners allowed to ruin fantastic dogs with their antics. They get to have children too and they tend to be absolute terrors (sorry I’m generalising here) but we don’t “put down” the child of these nightmare owners. Hell no, we pat them on the back, make excuses for them, maybe the good tax payer pays for a holiday or two and we spend thousands either on fixing the damage they’ve caused or to rehabilitate them because of their start in life. Give me half a dozen so called Pitbulls to rehabilitate any day of the week, given half a chance they can be trained.

Oh no, I’ve just realised. I’m starting to sound like my mother. I’m shutting up right now 🙊🙊🙊🙊🙊

Buccanarab · 07/01/2020 08:16

I have a Shiloh Shepherd. She is huge - weighs 46kgs. She was attacked by two HUGE (bigger than her) unleashed pit bulls.

Real Pitbull Terriers weigh around 15-30kg, whatever attacked your poor dog most likely wasn't a Pitbull if it was bigger than your 46kg dog.

whostoletheeyeoutyourteddybear · 07/01/2020 08:18

@Instagrump pitbulls are illegal in the UK whether they are nice or not!

Happyandsingle I so agree with you too many dogs are PTS in the UK as it is

proseccacaca · 07/01/2020 11:38

Adaline is correct, the Police will only get involved if a dog attacks a human, dog on dog attack is not a Police matter.

ExhaustedFlamingo · 07/01/2020 11:55

This is such a frustrating thread to read.

On one hand you've got all the owners of pit breeds declaring that their dog is the softest, most lickiest, waggiest dog in the world who would never hurt a fly. The same people keep going on about "DEED NOT BREED!".....

On the other hand, there are actual dog experts on here. People who work with dangerous dogs for a living. People who have faced dogs of all breeds which are out of control - and have said repeatedly that pits are the ones that are the most dangerous, with the potential to do the greatest harm.

Your pit breed pet may well be lovely. I don't disbelieve you. But why is it so difficult to comprehend that when a pit breed dog attacks, the consequences tend to be far worse than when another breed bites? The potential damage that a pit breed can do is so much worse than other breeds - and that's the issue. It doesn't matter if 100 owners lined up with lovely, soft pit bulls - the issue is that some pit bulls have poor genetics, are nervous and even when brought up properly, could still be more inclined to attack, and the result could be fatal. That's the problem. No-one is saying your Fluffy is a killer. It's the potential that pit breeds have when it goes wrong, and like it or not, statistics suggest that things go wrong very often - which is partly genetics and partly poor owner behaviour.

Attacks from pit breeds are far worse than from other dogs, with far worse injuries sustained. Throw in the fact that there are some pits that have dodgy genetics, add in the high prey drive of a pit breed, and there's a recipe for disaster - even when the owner has done everything right. This is the issue. The fact your dog is lovely is totally bloody irrelevant. FFS.

CJsGoldfish · 07/01/2020 12:23

I'm guess that the people who pass judgement so fast are also the kind of people who would also report someone who appeared to be a Muslim for looking at a book of chemistry after all he may be a terrorist looking up how to make a bomb or a black person who listens to gangster rap after all he may well be in a drive by shooting next week cos if he listens to that kind of music then he Must be in a gang!
Racism is the Pits, be it towards humans or animals!

Some of these pitbull lovers are NUTS!

Not doing the 'cause' any good, I assure you Confused
