To report someone who has a pitbull?

They boast about it being a pitbull, in IRL and on Facebook. Told me they weren't going to have it neutered (so it would continue to grow as big as possible), but had registered it. Surely it would need to be neutered? As part of this?

They told me they have it muzzled in public.

Second conversation. They've said it attacked 2 dogs, so has now been neutered.

I've seen the dog out in public without a muzzle and off lead..

I'm sure some will tell me to mind my own business. But I'd feel awful if something happened to another dog/animal or a child and it could have been prevented.

I thought Pit Bulls were off the dangerous list. The owners and not the dogs are to blame. These dogs are totally docile except when they are trained to be aggressive. I would ask your local Vets opinion. If the dog was removed it would most usually be put down. These owners must be totally dusgraceful people. Not the type to be your friend if they are irresponsible dog owners!

FeeLock28 · 06/01/2020 18:39

If they live locally or you're concerned about repercussions, suggest you speak to the RSPCA. I'm sure they'll have a confidential advice line.

Vynalbob · 06/01/2020 18:42

Report it as hearsay.
They have to check it out.
If its rubbish no harm done.

Either
Constant liars
Have a unruly dangerous dog
Have been reported and are trying to find out who did it.

Staffs are beautiful.
This owner sounds like a knob, and if it is a pit needs reporting

Quietlycrazy1 · 06/01/2020 18:56

I had a pitbull for 14 wonderful years. He was the best dog you could imagine. Went everywhere with us. It’s so unfair for these lovely good natured dogs who’ve been exploited by humans to be judged so unfairly. Ever heard the term there are no bad dogs only bad owners? It’s true. A dog is like a child that never grows up. They are like sponges and learn what we teach them. They are illegal and to be fair I didn’t know mine was one when I rescued him. He was just a cute little black and white puppy that needed a home. He was two when one of my neighbours reported him and I had to have him neutered too keep him. How ridiculous to blanket ban any breed of dog. For me it was down to the discretion of the local council. Mine was amazing with children and never attacked anyone in his life and it broke my heart when he passed away but because he was a pitbull someone thought they should report him. I live in a quiet country road. He was never walked off his lead. I am an accountant and my husband is an engineer and we live a very quiet unassuming life. I’m tiny and probably looked ridiculous walking this big beast of a thing but we trotted along merrily. Until someone decided he “might” be dangerous. I jumped through hoops to keep my boy and later heard who reported him while in the queue of the local post office. Ironic really seeing as the gentleman who did it kept two of the most vicious jack Russell’s you’d ever met who bit the postie more than once and who was appalled when fox hunting was banned. Any dog will attack when it’s cornered. It’s the nature of the beast and they are all unpredictable. Any breed is capable of causing a lot of damage. Goodness sake I have a Maltese now and he nipped the Tesco delivery man the week before Christmas. I consider myself a very responsible owner and the delivery man laughed at the cheek of him but if he hadn’t of been so understanding I could have had a very different outcome. Think carefully before doing something that could end in that poor dogs death.

threatmatrix · 06/01/2020 19:04

Leobynature
They are only dangerous if they a brought up wrong just like children. I’ve been around these sort of dogs all my life and never had a bad encounter. People like you really annoy me

thedancingbear · 06/01/2020 19:05

I had a pitbull for 14 wonderful years. He was the best dog you could imagine.

Some neighbours of my parents had a pitbull. He was an absolute delight and fantastic around kids.

Then one day, he flipped out and savaged the owner's grandmother to death.

Jack Russells, even 'vicious' ones, tend not to do this.

Nothanks1 · 06/01/2020 19:09

@thedancingbear that sounds absolutely horrific! Do you mind linking the news story because something so insane would definitely be in the news, surely?

LadyAllegraImelda · 06/01/2020 19:10

definitely report

ScrimshawTheSecond · 06/01/2020 19:22

There's between 2 and 6 human fatalities every year in the UK from dogs, Nothanks.

Technonan · 06/01/2020 19:34

ScrimshawTheSecond that's about the same number who die of water intoxication each year, in a population of around 68 million. Tiny, tiny, vanishingly small risk, and always preventable. Don't get me started on cars.

Dog attacks occur because people don't know how to treat dogs. Don't have a dog if you don't know what you're doing, the same way you shouldn't drive a car if you don't know what you're doing.

MarrymeTomHardy · 06/01/2020 19:55

Quietlycrazy1 I like you! Deed not Breed Smile

Jogonandshutup · 06/01/2020 20:05

It won’t be a pitbull. Hate those idiots that go around saying they have a pitbull. I would not report it on those grounds as the owner just sounds like a complete to**er - if it really has attacked 2 other dogs then it should be reported though as I wouldn’t want that to happen if I was out with my dogs. Thick idiots that go around with these ‘dangerous’ dogs - the owners need putting down, not the dogs!

Jogonandshutup · 06/01/2020 20:06

threatmatrix agree 100% 👏

Jogonandshutup · 06/01/2020 20:07

Quietlycrazy1 agree too 👏

Piwi1625 · 06/01/2020 20:20

Depends if it's a full pit. Nowadays the pitbulls are mixed with another breed to stop them from being illegal.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 06/01/2020 20:33

Maybe so - it still happens. I was answering the poster who seemed incredulous that anybody would be killed by a dog. It happens.

Ravenesque · 06/01/2020 20:38

It's probably not a pitbull as many others have said. It sounds like either the dog itself is dangerous or the owners are absolute fuckwits, actually, the second seems to be an absolute definite.

I've fallen in love with Pitties after seeing loads of videos of them from the US. They really are a lovely dog when treated properly and not horribly bred for fighting.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/01/2020 20:47

Good lord yet again theres some total twaddle on this thread.

There is no DNA testing for pitbulls.

Reporting it MAY result in the dog being siezed if suspected as being a pitbull or pitbull 'type' dog.

As far as UK law is concerned, if it looks like what DEFRA define as a pitbull, according to measurements, appearance, proportions etc.

Then it is a pitbull type, and it is illegal.

Doesn't matter if its a pedigree lab x pedigree staffie, or an alien from outer space, if it LOOKS like a pitbull, it IS a pitbull.

IF the dog is seized and IF the dog is then determined by measurements to be a pitbull THEN the question is, is the dog dangerous.

If its not, it may go back to the owner IF they are a suitable person (no criminal record, suitable housing etc etc).

All of this may take months or years, during which time the dog sits in a kennels, deprived of most of the basic things a dog needs (exercise, interaction with people, play, training, toys, etc)... which can and will have an effect on behaviour and temperament, to the point where some dogs having been deemed not dangerous by the courts, have then been euthanised as their behaviour has deteriorated so much due to the neglect in kennels.

If you want them to behave better and be more careful with their dog, speak to your local dog warden.

cherish123 · 06/01/2020 21:02

Yes. They are dangerous. If it's not a pitbull, no harm done.

thedancingbear · 06/01/2020 21:14

@nothanks1 , here you go, my pleasure:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/cardiff-dog-attack-grandmother-killed-5388195

The extra-frightening thing was that I saw various people I knew from school etc. commenting on the story on FB, saying he was a lovely, calm dog, great with the kids etc. and that, as I described, just lost his shit one day. In a way that Jack Russells tend not to.

But I don't imagine you'll believe me about that either.

tabulahrasa · 06/01/2020 21:33

@thedancingbear have you linked to the wrong case?

That’s the bulldog owned by a man previously banned from keeping dogs because of a previous aggressive dog he’d owned - and the dog had injured the woman on at least 4 separate occasions before that attack...

CuppaTeaPlz · 06/01/2020 21:36

DEED NOT BREED!!!

Unless you have physically seen a dog attack someone, you should NEVER report them!!! I’ve known SO many people “big” up how nasty their dog is so people are less likely to break in or attack them, thinking they have a violent dog. 99% of the time the dogs are so lovely and loveable, and they get put down bcoz they are seen as a nasty breed - I rescued a dog, after being told she was a Staffy x Boxer, only to find out that she was actually part American Blue Pitbull, which are illegal in the UK.
We had to hide her from people bcoz the rest of her entire litter was put down after someone reported their breed to the authorities. That dog was the softest, most loving dog I’ve EVER had. I would of trusted her with a newborn baby.

It’s never about the breed, it’s about the person raising them!

Nothanks1 · 06/01/2020 21:54

I stand corrected! I think it’s understandable that people are wary of such claims because 9/10 times they’re fake or missing crucial details that I think another poster has just pointed out below...

Branleuse · 06/01/2020 22:17

Thats not even a pitbull for a start. That case is horrific but its completely irrelevent
