Challenge 25 ID policy.

Hello,

What do you think of the policy that requires shops to ask for ID from anybody who looks like they are under the age of 25 when they buy age-restricted products?

It's stupid because all people have to do to get around it is to just put the money on the counter and walk out with the item they are buying. But the notices are still nonetheless very unpleasant to have to look at.

What do you think?

Challenge 25 ID policy.

@Butchyrestingface "Try buying a can of Coca Cola Energy or Red Bull without ID nowadays. A lot of shops won’t let you buy “high caffeine” drinks without ID."
WTF? That’s insane.

NO, it's really not insane, high caffeine drinks can produce abnormal heart rhythms in adults, making a previously fit and healthy person tachycardic, on a child this can be more severe and may prove to be fatal.

No they don’t.

Why?

bridgetreilly · 05/01/2020 19:21

It's fine, OP, you'll be 18 eventually.

Butchyrestingface · 05/01/2020 19:22

If the threat is so severe, they should be age restricted, not have de facto age restrictions imposed inconsistently from store to store.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2020 19:26

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42567638 Responsible retailing I think.

InAPrettyCabinet · 05/01/2020 22:04

As a parent I'm glad some stores have age restrictions on energy drinks. My teens have never been allowed any and I won't allow them any time soon.
@Fr0g I wonder how much is down to intimidation? Poor cashiers being at risk of fines.
Also I love the idea you tickle those Staffies and American Bulldogs under the chin and call them beautiful 😍

ACautionaryTale · 05/01/2020 22:05

The bit that is really annoying are those stores that won't sell alcohol if your kid is with you.

Which goes against the fact you can give your kid alchohol if they are over 5.

Animum2 · 05/01/2020 22:07

I got asked for id the other day when I was buying lottery tickets and I'm 43!

I was a bit surprised but then one of the other till people recognised me and said I didn't need id

InAPrettyCabinet · 05/01/2020 22:21

What countries and what items? Would you rather there was no law in place? I genuinely don't understand your issue.

Go across to Europe, for example.
@Wayland1 but for what products though? Ffs this is like pulling teeth.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2020 22:28

So in Europe you can buy any alcohol you like by leaving the money in the counter and legging it?
When DS goes travelling this summer I will tell him not to worry then. 🤷‍♀️

ShinyGiratina · 05/01/2020 23:21

I was old enough to buy alcohol before the Millenium, but still intermittently get asked for ID, generally if I'm buying a few odd items rather than a week's shop for the family. I was refused service at 37 because I'd taken my driving license out of my purse a couple of days earlier for a DBS check. I did laugh recently when IDed, and said I hadn't been asked since I was 37 which got an odd look, and proving my early 80s DoB always produces some interesting expressions.

The signs are poorly worded on the "if you look under 25 type signs" as that's very subjective, and I'm being asked to prove that I am 13-20 years over the age range required. I clearly don't consistently look under 25 as I'm not always asked.

I normally keep my driving licence on me; my usual exception is when out on a long run if I use my emergency change to buy an energy drink to get me the last 3 miles up to home. Normally my beetroot, sweaty visage does the trick, but there was one occasion that I was looked at quizzically and recognised as the former Beaver leader of the cashiers child (and known mother of two school age children), and another time when the assistant dodged directly asking by mumuring "16...18..." and I answered 37 Grin She swiped through. As frustrating as it would be to be denied a caffine dose to get me up that infernal hill, I do support age restricting energy drinks after countless attempts to inflict an education upon hyper teenagers who think a bag of crisps and litre of cheapo energy drink counts as a breakfast.

I was a bit bamboozled at 24 when the laws tightened up and I found myself having to produce ID to buy myself lime and soda at the bar which previously hadn't been an issue. I got my provisional licence a few years before learning to drive purely because it was less faff than carting my passport around.

TriciaH87 · 05/01/2020 23:40

Their doing their job to avoid a prison sentence. Oh and the item is held onto until you prove your age.

steff13 · 05/01/2020 23:41

In America, they need your ID to swipe their machine before it lets you pay. No ID, no item.

I've never had that to buy agree restricted items other than certain cold medications.

Maybe the OP objects to the sign because it's red and she prefers blue.

steff13 · 05/01/2020 23:42

Age restricted. 🙄

BaubleWobbler · 06/01/2020 00:44

I was a bit surprised but then one of the other till people recognised me and said I didn't need id

Well that was wrong for a start. It's up to the person serving if they ID or not regardless if another colleague has previous ID as it's the person serving who is liable.

If I ask for ID, even my manager can't over rule me as it's me serving.

Dustarr73 · 06/01/2020 01:34

I think a lot of times cashiers are over zealous and take the sign literally.

I have served people i know who where 18,they looked younger. But i knew them personally.

I asked a 63 year old women for ID.Because she was at the end of my till,in hotpants and a cowboy hat.So i actually didnt see her face till after i asked her.She was delighted,i got a giggle.Everybody happy.

ChocolateCoins19 · 06/01/2020 01:44

My. 42 Yr old friend for ID for vodka.. She looks 42 aswell.. Being honest

She had no ID with her so couldn't purchase it.. Yes she was miffed but the best bit she was so flattered so wasn't bothered that she had to go elsewhere.. We then went into another supermarket and she said.. Don't id me I've already been I'd up the Rd.. All in a jokey way.
The young lad in the till said.. Nah I wouldn't anyway I can see you're was over 25.. And started to guess her age.. He was so sweet and funny how he justbsaid it

MiniGuinness · 06/01/2020 02:06

Are people a bit dim? Because it is a weird way of wording it... if you are lucky enough. Although there were enough responses on this thread saying they love looking young enough to be thought of as under 25. Why? It’s not better, it could mean you have a big old moon face covered in acne, how is that lucky?

Willow2017 · 06/01/2020 03:14

which goes against the fact you can give your kid alchohol if they are over 5.
Only in your own home.
It is illegal to knowingly sell alcohol to someone whom you suspect is buying it for a minor.
But yes not selling it to someone purely because they.have a baby or child with them is ridiculous and they clearly don't understand the concept behind challenge 25.

Are people a bit dim? ....It’s not better, it could mean you have a big old moon face covered in acne, how is that lucky?

Miniguinness
What a weird post what's having a "moon face" got to do with any age group? That's a pretty immature and ignorant post, makes me wonder how old you are?

MiniGuinness · 06/01/2020 03:46

I’m clearly under 25. Why don’t you card me?

ElluesPichulobu · 06/01/2020 04:47

@Miniguinness believe me, once you are in your 30s you will cherish every time you are asked for ID, as it means they haven't noticed the wrinkles, grey hairs and overall sense of being utterly worn out enough to pass as young and fresh and carefree if only for a moment.

youth is wasted on the young. they have no idea how lucky they are until its gone.

duebaby2 · 06/01/2020 04:56

They can't put the money on the counter and walk out if you have to scan that item first. But really you should challenge the age before you even scan the item. It works well were i work, no ID no sale. Especially for school age kids trying to buy energy drinks

steff13 · 06/01/2020 05:16

It’s not better, it could mean you have a big old moon face covered in acne, how is that lucky?

But I don't have a "big old min face covered in acne," so I don't have to worry about that.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 06/01/2020 05:21

okiedokieme · 06/01/2020 06:01

What's the problem ... I got id'd in the USA at 46, they have a no id no drink policy at sports stadiums even if you are in your 60's! As long as they are consistent I don't have an issue
