The new Mary Poppins is terrible

I’m just watching the new Mary Poppins. I know, knowbody else can be Mary Poppins like Julie Andrews- she is a legend! I didn’t expect Emily blunt to be to her standards, this is absolutely terrible. Sadly, I do not rate Emily blunt In this at all. Has anybody else seen it??

I haven't seen it. If they can't make a trailer that makes it look worth watching, there's little hope for the film imo.

ToffeePennie · 04/01/2020 09:06

I love Julie Andrews and no one can ever even dream of comparing.
I’ve seen the stage show which is incredible.
I’ve watched the new one, and actually it’s not too bad. If you’re able to suspend belief and forget the Julie Andrews one (apart from a few choice moments) it’s all together a different thing in a way and becomes palatable.

DobbyLovesSocks · 04/01/2020 09:12

@adaline sorry I meant nearer as in time wise. If they had made the films in a series like HP or Twilight or star wars it might have been better. So much time has passed between the original and this one.

But I agree that the films are very different to the books

LaurieMarlow · 04/01/2020 09:20

I also thought that every sequence in it was a blatant redo of a sequence from the original, and so if they have the gall to call it a sequel, they may as well acknowledge that they did what the worst sequels do, which is copy the exact plot and make like for like substitutions

Exactly this.

Just a cynical, money making exercise.

loserssaywhat · 04/01/2020 09:34

Watched mary poppins on Christmas Day and then put on the new one.
Turned it off when it got to that strange burlesque performance.
Couldn't get past the accent at all.
I'll probably finish watching it at some point but I just thought the songs were awful! Not remotely catchy or as fun as the original.

Lololololola · 04/01/2020 09:37

Totally agree op. I disliked the faux posh accent, the do-overs of each scene and the supposed Jane romance.
Did like the 2 second cameo by original Jane and the Dick Van Dyke scene. Not even Meryl Streep could save this one for me.

FurryMuzzle · 04/01/2020 09:42

I really liked it and especially enjoyed switching the lessons - is the first children had to learn to be a bit more responsible but these had to learn to have fun again and be less serious.

I thought the songs were catchy too and was humming them for days.

Ski4130 · 04/01/2020 09:43

I liked it, so did 9 yr old dd, who adored the original too. I wasn’t expecting the new version to be identical to the original though, just a nice updated stand alone story, which it was.

Now CATS, that’s a steaming pile of crap .....

southeastdweller · 04/01/2020 09:49

It was mediocre at best. I think the art/set designers did a wonderful job but the story was weak, EB lacked charm, LMM was miscast. Worst of all is that all of the songs were dull.

Stassion · 04/01/2020 10:09

The first time I watched it I wasn’t impressed but I admit that I was a huge fan of the first one. I thought Emily Blunts accent was terrible and I didn’t buy into Michaels character or Jacks. However, having now watched it quite a few times it has grown on me. EB had huge shoes To fill.

ForalltheSaints · 04/01/2020 10:26

Perhaps you need a spoonful of sugar before watching!

adaline · 04/01/2020 10:49

But that's what the books are like. They follow roughly the same plot (a problem happens, Mary Poppins arrives, they go on different adventures, one of the parents realised they were being strict and she leaves again) - they just go on different adventures to different places each time.

All they've done is take stories from the subsequent books and change the main characters to Jane and Michael as opposed to George and Winifred like in the books.

mogtheexcellent · 04/01/2020 11:25

Didn't notice emily blunt too busy watching drooling over lin Manuel.

Loved they had Angela lansbury at the end.

Amortentia · 04/01/2020 11:34

I thought it was dull as ditchwater personally and thought Emily Blunt was fine but given very little to do. The plot was boring and I was bored to tears. Can't complain about the performances but it seems to lack confidence and charm. The Paddington tread similar ground and were so much better and more fun and involving in comparison

Totally agree, I thought it was intensely dull, nearly cried with relief when it was over. By contrast, both Paddington films were a amazingly good.

Flairhead · 04/01/2020 13:41

I really liked it. Wasn't keen on the whole Topsy subplot but really enjoyed the rest of it. Some of the songs are great too, I can't get enough of The Place Where Lost Things Go and Nowhere To Go But Up.

DobbyLovesSocks · 04/01/2020 17:41

@Lololololola when was Jane's cameo? Admittedly I might have closed my eyes for a minute or ten

my2bundles · 04/01/2020 17:51

There should have been some sort of tribute to Mathew Garber.

Elle7rose · 04/01/2020 17:55

I hated it and wouldn't watch it again! I was expecting to enjoy it. Emily Blunt over-acts and puts on a silly accent; the music is so much worse than in the first and the premise is boring.

There was only one Mary Poppins!

PositiveVibez · 04/01/2020 18:00

I absolutely hated it. Whoever said paint by numbers job was correct.

Emily Blunt was so annoying. I didn't realise it was possible to speak posher than the queen, yet she managed it. Her accent was horrible.

Een fyact eet was blood-ee rydic-you-loose

3luckystars · 04/01/2020 19:45

Its absolutely awful. I don't know how it was allowed out.

MirandaWest · 04/01/2020 19:48

I enjoyed it Smile

Mummyshark2019 · 04/01/2020 19:57

Yes! Her accent was ridiculous!! The way she says "Banks" children really grated on me. Awful film.

HorsieLaura · 04/01/2020 19:58

So you 'heard' it was terrible and didn't use your own judgement to find out for yourself? Are.you usually so idiotic about all your life decisions? Use your own mind and make your own decisions! You come across as a brain dead moron but I'd want to actually meet you before before making a proper decision aye?

Emmelina · 04/01/2020 20:01

Emily Blunt’s accent is bloody awful, it put me right off. Managed to make it to the end of the film but only just.

Lololololola · 04/01/2020 20:47

@DobbyLovesSocks it was about half way through. New Jane was chatting to Jack? (Lamp guy) and the lady who asked for directions was the original Jane. It was literally 20 seconds.
