The new Mary Poppins is terrible

I’m just watching the new Mary Poppins. I know, knowbody else can be Mary Poppins like Julie Andrews- she is a legend! I didn’t expect Emily blunt to be to her standards, this is absolutely terrible. Sadly, I do not rate Emily blunt In this at all. Has anybody else seen it??

I loved it. As much as I thought the cameo by Angela Lansbury at the end was lovely, I really thought the icing on the cake would have been if Julie Andrews has played the role of the balloon lady...

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 04/01/2020 00:07

As with every single Disney re-make in the last decade, all I kept thinking was "I'd rather be watching the original".

The performances were poor but worse the songs were mediocre. Not one had the depth or emotion of the originals by the Sherman brothers.

TigerOnATrain · 04/01/2020 00:17

Agree with @ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen (about remakes, and especially Disney ones) being a bit flat.

Another prime example is The Lion King from last year. Fucking dire! 2 hours of my life I will never get back.

Boring, flat, dull, lacklustre. Just shite. The 1994 one was sooooo much better.

Why the hell do they keep remaking everything anyway??? Have they run out of ideas or something? Remakes, rehashes, sequels galore. BORRRING! Hmm

Marellaspirit · 04/01/2020 00:18

I didn't like it- I didn't like Emily Blunt at all, she just wasn't right for Mary Poppins, the father irritated me, the children were too well behaved and the songs weren't as catchy as the original. I did love the stage show though, so it's not just that I think you can't better the original.

tattychicken · 04/01/2020 00:30

It's not a remake. It's a film of some of the later books in the Mary Poppins series by PL Travers. With a bit of ad libbing. There were a few, Mary Poppins Comes Back, MP In The Park. I liked it. Though yes, the accent was a tad OTT.

zoobincan · 04/01/2020 01:03

It's not a remake though.

PorpentinaScamander · 04/01/2020 01:08

I liked it but its not a patch on the original.
The little girl has some gorgeous hats though! I really need to try and make some.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 04/01/2020 01:24

The bloody accent was dreadful. Every time she said "Michael" it was just weird.

The music hall cockney dance bit was odd too.

And why were they setting Jane up with Jack. She's far too posh for him.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/01/2020 01:31

I was massively disappointed in it.

Whereas the first one is a perennial timeless classic for all ages, I spent this one thinking :

I'd love this, if I were a child

The only bit I really liked was Trip A Little Light Fantastic

I also thought that every sequence in it was a blatant redo of a sequence from the original, and so if they have the gall to call it a sequel, they may as well acknowledge that they did what the worst sequels do, which is copy the exact plot and make like for like substitutions

So :

Vase vs Chalk Paintings
Meryl vs Tea Party
Bath vs Tidying Up

Etc etc

SunshineAvenue · 04/01/2020 01:52

I loved it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/01/2020 02:15

I've not watched it, but Nothing would beat the original for me. I used to watch it on loop. Drove my mum and dad mad

FixItUpChappie · 04/01/2020 02:23

I was expecting to like it but didn't really. I didn't really like the songs tbh.

poppycity · 04/01/2020 06:12

Agreed @Tinyandpetite - I had hoped to like it and expected it to be different. I think EB is a super person and actress but I hated this film. I wanted a bit more of the old to be thread in too I think - at least a couple songs and maybe a cameo of JA? Not sure but I thought it was boring and disappointing.

Cremebrule · 04/01/2020 08:29

She looked the part but her accent was terrible. I’m not sure how someone with her natural accent mangled it so badly. She sounded like an American trying to be over posh. It was just grating.

NameChangeNugget · 04/01/2020 08:30

I really liked it

Jayneisagirlsname · 04/01/2020 08:36

I loved it! Julie Andrews has always been an absolute favourite of mine so I was a bit unsure of how it would go, but I loved EB (a few accent issues aside), thought the children were fantastic and adored the songs. Emily Mortimer was my standout.

In fact, I think I'll go watch it now!

my2bundles · 04/01/2020 08:40

Loved the origimall, this was ok. One thing that seemed very obvious was the little girl seemed to be constantly looking for cues from someone off set and seemed wooden during the musical numbers. I know she's a child but just didn't seem like a good match to the other kids.

DobbyLovesSocks · 04/01/2020 08:44

We watched it Xmas afternoon and I thought it was ok. Was never going to hold a candle to the original. If they had made it nearer the original then it might have had the same magic but they had to wait until P.L Travers estate released the copyright.
When D-V-D appeared I yelled out and DS thought I had lost the plot. Agree with PP about rehashing old movies. Disney struck lucky I think with Beauty and the Beast re-make and have tried to re-create that with every other live action since and haven't quite hit the mark - except maybe Aladdin? Lady and the Tramp and Mulan are due out soon

adaline · 04/01/2020 08:46

I agree op! I thought it was appalling. She seems harsh, snooty and the accent is dreadful.

Have you ever read the books? They're actually pretty dark and grim and Mary Poppins isn't this nice Disney nanny like she was portrayed in the original film.

PL Travers was not happy with how Disney changed her book to make it all cutesy.

Notso · 04/01/2020 08:48

I couldn't get over Emily Blunt's awful accent, there was a bizarre intonation that made her sound like Lenny Bruce.
The rest of it wasn't too bad.

and maybe a cameo of JA?
@poppycity Julie Andrew was asked but declined to do it, saying she didn't want to take focus from Emily Blunt. I suspect the balloon lady at the end was the role meant for JA.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/01/2020 08:49

I really enjoyed it, it was perfect.

adaline · 04/01/2020 08:51

If they had made it nearer the original then it might have had the same magic but they had to wait until P.L Travers estate released the copyright.

But it's not supposed to be anything like the original. The characters like Topsy are from the later Mary Poppins books - it's the storylines from the later books but rehashed slightly using Jane and Michael as adults as opposed to George and Winifred.

In the original books there were five DC - Jane, Michael, John, Annabel and Barbara. The idea was Mary Poppins came back several times through their childhood and took them on different adventures, like she'd done with George Banks when he was a boy.

The nanny in the books is actually pretty dark and angry - nothing like the way she was portrayed by Julie Andrews - it's one of the reasons PL Travers was unhappy with the original Disney film.

adaline · 04/01/2020 08:53

I suspect the balloon lady at the end was the role meant for JA.

YY I thought that too, though Angela Lansbury was brilliant as always!

tigger1001 · 04/01/2020 08:55

It was ok. But Emily blunts accent really grated on me.

LaurieMarlow · 04/01/2020 08:58

There’s just no point to it (apart from to make money of course). It has nothing new to say, it’s only interested in rehashing the original like it’s a paint by numbers job. They shouldn’t have bothered.

Emily Blunt isn’t terrible as MP though. Except for the singing.
