The new Mary Poppins is terrible

I’m just watching the new Mary Poppins. I know, knowbody else can be Mary Poppins like Julie Andrews- she is a legend! I didn’t expect Emily blunt to be to her standards, this is absolutely terrible. Sadly, I do not rate Emily blunt In this at all. Has anybody else seen it??

I loved it! Emily was a little tough to warm to but the songs and kids were great. Lots of clever touches. We still listen to the soundtrack.

WeArnottamused · 03/01/2020 22:58

I switched it off

BelfastNonBlonde · 03/01/2020 22:59

Agreed. Couldnt watch it.

MyHairNeedsASnip · 03/01/2020 23:00

Loved it! I cried when Dick van Dyke appeared, wasn't expecting it at all

WeeCheekyBird · 03/01/2020 23:01

I loved the first one and really wanted to like the new one but I just couldn't take to it.

I thought Emily Blunt was too stern and lost all of the warmth that Julie Andrews put into the part. I just found her unlikable and although Mary Poppins was very snobby and almost stuck up, she had a twinkle in her eye and a real charm behind the posh exterior that Emily Blunt just missed.

I've tried to watch it twice now and just can't take to it. :(

DianaT1969 · 03/01/2020 23:04

I really disliked the film.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 03/01/2020 23:10

Loved it but then I love anything and everything involving Lin Manuel Miranda.

IndigoApple · 03/01/2020 23:11

I saw it at the cinema last Christmas and hated it! I'd had a couple of drinks beforehand which probably didn't help, I kept nearly falling asleep.

I didn't rate Emily Blunt, though I've liked her in other things. I also found Lin Manuel Miranda really irritating, was shocked when someone told me he's behind Hamilton!

lakeswimmer · 03/01/2020 23:13

Our family loved it (kids are Mary Poppins aficionados) and bought the DVD.

The general consensus was that Emily Blunt was very good and it captured the feel of the first film. The original Jane (Karen Dotrice) makes an appearance as well as Dick Van Dyke.

FirenzeArno · 03/01/2020 23:14

It was never going to be like the first one but I thought it was a nice film with some great musical numbers. And Chris O Dowd.

Mummyshark2019 · 03/01/2020 23:14

Saw it when it came out in the cinema. Absolutely awful! Emily Blunt plays a terrible Mary Poppins. Major let down of a film.

LemonadePockets · 03/01/2020 23:17

Absolutely loved it

Greenwingmemories · 03/01/2020 23:19

I hated it. EB lacked charm and her accent was ridiculous. I also thought Lin Manuel Miranda was terrible. Why pick another actor who can't do a cockney accent. He also lacked the sense of fun and joyousness that the character needed.

Completely lacks the warmth and humour of the Paddington films. Very disappointing as I was hoping to love it.

candycane22 · 03/01/2020 23:21

YANBU it is desperate drivel

ChequerBoard · 03/01/2020 23:25

YANBU I love the original am but just couldn't watch this. I just can't understand why Emily Blunt made such a terrible hash of the voice?!?

MintyMabel · 03/01/2020 23:32

eg the tuppence paying off the loan

Which was complete bollocks. Even in the unlikely event that it made anything more than a pound, it would have all been lost in the crash of the 30s.

I wasn’t a fan of the film. It was trying too hard to be like the original. I did like Emily Blunt though, she made a good job of a pretty poor script.

The stage Mary poppins on currently, however, is outstanding and worth every penny

Saw this when it toured a couple of years ago. It was ok, but worth mentioning it goes really bloody dark in the middle, not the MP we all know and love.

KellyHall · 03/01/2020 23:33

I hated it, I didn't even get halg way through before I switched it off.

Nothing will ever come close to the original for me.

MsJuniper · 03/01/2020 23:36

I enjoyed it but not a patch on the original. Agree EB's speaking voice is terrible. I don't know if they'll make another sequel but I felt like she might settle into the role more if they did (once she'd heard herself back) and if they had a really fantastic new storyline a la Paddington 2.

MsJuniper · 03/01/2020 23:38

But I saw the stage show and really didn't like it - felt like someone had found the songbook and costumes all jumbled up and tried to work out their own story from it. None of the charm of the film and none of the magic of theatre.

GabsAlot · 03/01/2020 23:40

i also agree about the accent emily put it on way too much-i coldnt tell you what any of the songs are now either

GabsAlot · 03/01/2020 23:42

oh the best thing about it is DVD-legend

OddshoesOddsocks · 03/01/2020 23:43

I thought it was perfect and dd2 adores it. I don’t think they could’ve done a better job and the songs are fabulous! YABVVU Grin

GabsAlot · 03/01/2020 23:45

Far from perfect thats the orginal

TigerOnATrain · 03/01/2020 23:55

YANBU!

TigerOnATrain · 03/01/2020 23:56

@Tinyandpetite

YANBU it was shit.

The songs were naff and it felt so amateurish and crap. And BORING!

Also, on the royal variety show, there was about 20 minutes of the Mary Poppins Stage Show, and that was boring as fuck too.

The Julie Andrews one is really good! And I love Dick Van Dyke (even if his cockney accent is a bit questionable!)
