(Lighthearted)

Help me settle this debate with my husband!

Okay so, the house has got messy. You've been too busy to keep on top of it and you need to do a big tidy up and clean top to bottom.

Does it make more sense to

A) Go room by room and don't move to the next until one is finished

B) Task by task ie, collect laundry from each room, tidy every room, vacuum every room, mop the floors

B for me

Andonandonan · 03/01/2020 23:13

Why is there laundry in every room? First job - train everyone to put it in the laundry basket(s)!

I would do a combo of both. So some time-dependent tasks first eg laundry, dishwasher.

Then tidy a room at a time but working systematically, usually from top to bottom of house putting everything away in correct place as I go.

Then clean bathrooms.

Finally dust / hoover / sweep / mop floors etc throughout.

I go round tidying first, put everything away downstairs and shove anything to go upstairs on the stairs. Then go upstairs and tidy and shove everything to go downstairs in the laundry basket. Then run up and downstairs tidying last bits. Then DH does the hovering while I clean bathrooms. So I'm definitely a B.

Mainly go room by room but I'd hoover all in one go.

I'm with A then B plus teamwork!

chipsandgin · 03/01/2020 23:55

Both!? I’d collect laundry & stuff for the dishwasher from each room, get that on & then do each individual room but save the hoovering to the end..

mullyluo · 04/01/2020 00:19

Definitely A, or things don't get properly tidied, theres just a general improvement.

B

I do a mix of both.

I do an initial sweep of every room to collect any laundry. It is then sorted into piles on the kitchen floor, one load put on and then I rotate it into the dryer/airer and the next load in when a cycle finishes throughout the day.

I then do a sweep for cutlery/crockery, take it out to the kitchen and do the washing up so it can dry while I do the rest of the house.

Then a quick sweep with a bin bag for any big/obvious rubbish to go straight out to the bin.

Once all the big stuff is out I go room to room with my cleaning stuff, a laundry basket and a rubbish bag. As I clean each room, any item that doesnt live there goes into the laundry basket. When I move to the next room I decant any items that live there from the laundry basket and replace it with anything that needs to leave the room. I do this throughout the house till I get through every room. At the end anything that doesn't have a home goes into the bin.

I then go round and do windows and hoover/mop all rooms and remake beds with fresh sheets, return soft furnishings (cushion covers/blankets) to their rooms and then drop on the sofa with a glass of wine and order takeaway because theres no way in hell my sparkling kitchen is being used that day!

Start with A for the tidying then B for the deep clean.
