(Lighthearted)

Help me settle this debate with my husband!

Okay so, the house has got messy. You've been too busy to keep on top of it and you need to do a big tidy up and clean top to bottom.

Does it make more sense to

A) Go room by room and don't move to the next until one is finished

B) Task by task ie, collect laundry from each room, tidy every room, vacuum every room, mop the floors

A

Waveysnail · 03/01/2020 19:40

A but I'd gather washing first and put a load on as usually end up with 6 plus loads

InsertFunnyUsername · 03/01/2020 19:42

I realise were awkward and do a mixture. Go round collecting any cups, the other collects clothes stick them in sink/start a wash. Then one of us take upstairs the other takes downstairs.

Snowflake9 · 03/01/2020 19:46

Gather all laundry first. Then go room by room. Tidy, out things away. I take a laundry basket to carry things that belong in other rooms. Clean that room. Move to next. Repeat.

MitziK · 03/01/2020 19:46

Definitely method B.

Method A (or the Combined Approach) only leads to my having cleared the countertops, emptied and cleaned the sink, done the washing up, cleaned the hob, scrubbed the countertops, wiped down the appliances, swept and mopped the kitchen floor, cleaned two bathrooms, done three loads of washing and drying whilst DP is still fannying around in the spare room trying to decide which box to put the contents of the box that was already perfectly adequate inside.

And he'll still be in there five weeks later, having not yet finished it to his satisfaction.

ALWAYS B.

PPopsicle · 03/01/2020 19:49

A. But I do always put a load of washing on before I start cleaning as then it’s ready to be hung out once I’ve finished

Soontobe60 · 03/01/2020 19:50

Actually, you're doing exactly what I do, which is to spend half the day on Mumsnet, prevaricating over what room to clean first, having a nap then leaving it til tmorrow

Both! I go through all rooms to get laundry and strip beds. Put a load of washing in.
Then I go through all of the rooms and gather up anything for the dishwasher and put that on.
Then I work my way round upstairs room by room cleaning organizing dusting and windows etc.
Once the upstairs is done I Hoover all of the rooms/landing and the stairs.
Then downstairs clean organize dust and clean windows room by room.
Then I Hoover through downstairs.
Then I mop the bathrooms floors upstairs and down.
Change the mop and mop the kitchen and utility room.

I have a cleaning caddy so just load it with what I will need and it’s easy to cart stuff from room to room.
We took the Christmas decorations down tonight and dh is taking the kids out tomorrow so I can blitz the place top to bottom in peace and I am genuinely thrilled, I love a proper deep clean.

christmasathome · 03/01/2020 22:48

Mostly A bit a bit of both.

BrieAndChilli · 03/01/2020 22:51

I do a mix of both.
So all laundry would be collected and sorted into pile to be washed.
Then go room to room, sorting and cleaning, anything that doesn’t belong in room goes into ikea bag until we get to the room it needs to go in.
At the end all floors are hoovered and mopped in one go.

Newbie1999 · 03/01/2020 22:54

B!

TheJoxter · 03/01/2020 22:56

Bit of both but mostly B

minionsrule · 03/01/2020 22:56

A for me otherwise i miss things!

Chochito · 03/01/2020 22:57

I would do B.

MrsPworkingmummy · 03/01/2020 22:59

A

Iggly · 03/01/2020 23:00

B

I hate A and that’s how DH does things. What he does is tidy up one room really well and then leaves a big pile of shit which needs tidying away into other rooms but as he’s run out of time, it just sits there as i passive aggressively refuse to tidy it.

In fact it gives me mild rage as it just creates more work.

Personally I prefer B. It goes through a stage where it all looks shit then all of a sudden it quickly comes together.

dudsville · 03/01/2020 23:00

Neither.
Get the laundry started first cause it takes so long.
Dust
Vacuum
Bathrooms
Make the beds
kitchen
Rubbish.

Herbalteahippie · 03/01/2020 23:03

B. And don’t worry about above eye level. Fuck it.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 03/01/2020 23:04

Bit of both, get some laundry going and dishwasher, then tidy generally maybe one person upstairs one down, kitchen and bathroom cleaned one at a time, bins emptied and taken out, then general dust, hoover, polish, mop.

ElefanteIntheroom · 03/01/2020 23:07

B makes most sense when it comes to time.

Take all laundry, cutlery/plates etc., out of each room and put them on a wash.

Put things back in the right places, make beds.

Dust, wipe down each room.

Then lastly Hoover and mop.

That way you get every task done in each room at the same time. You won't forget anything

EmmaC78 · 03/01/2020 23:09

B

NearlyGranny · 03/01/2020 23:09

B, definitely, as tidying will always mean moving stuff to the room it belongs in!

Divide and conquer by doing a deal, like "I'll gather all the laundry if you gather all the crockery." Then regroup and deal again. Done in half the time and no confusion about someone thinking you were doing it all and sliding out. 😉
