To not get the vegan meat thing.

I just don't get it. Surely if you're vegan/ vegetarian you don't want things to taste of meat which you have foresworn, so why want a fake meat taste. I just don't get the fake steak, fake bacon etc thing. Be vegan/ vegetarian or just eat meat. It's one or the other.

OP posts:

What don't you get? I'm vegan for ethical reasons, I grew up eating meat and like the taste of it so it seems perfectly reasonable to eat plant-based versions.
But I don't expect other vegans to eat exactly like I do, nor do I expect other people to tell me what they think I should enjoy eating. We're all different, everyone prefers different tastes and textures. Faux meat is made from plants - therefore when I eat it I know that it is not an animal, which is all that is required for my ethical stance on food.

TamingToddler · 03/01/2020 10:33

We are huge meat eaters. Going veggie this month for environmental/health reasons. Meat substitutes are a good place to start. Not a fan of processed food anyway but I was eating processed sausages before so a veggie sausage will do me no harm.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 03/01/2020 10:34

Vegan meats in general are rank. I much prefer bean burgers or beetroot ones.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 10:34

If we wanted to eat less meat we would but we dont

Many people do though. A quick Google will demonstrate that is exactly what's happening. It doesn't mean that everyone will go vegan but many people want to eat less meat for various reasons and veganism is becoming increasingly popular so it makes sense for companies to offer more vegan alternatives and that's exactly what the majority of them are doing.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 10:34

Why do meat eaters feel the need to say ‘ I luvs meat me’ on these threads

because they are mocking the patronising and virtue signalling comments they are replying to?

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 10:34

@squeekums Some meat eaters do want to and have reduced their meat intake though. So I don't know why you keep saying 'we'.

Gonetoget · 03/01/2020 10:35

its so meat eaters will eat less meat
It’s not, although I know that some meat eaters will eat it on slimming club plans, because it’s meant to be lower in fat. Or to have a meat free day.

Skyejuly · 03/01/2020 10:35

I use them if no other alt but prefer not too.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 10:36

you are much better off eating chicken or turkey than fake meat if you are on a slimming plan.

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 10:37

@JosefKeller It wasn't 'just a question' though was it. The OP ended their post by saying 'it's one or the other'. So any facade of an innocent question has long faded.

milliefiori · 03/01/2020 10:37

Vegan meat comes in handy if you are cooking for a family where some are meat eaters and some aren't. I can make 'meatballs' in tomato sauce that no one notices are vegan mince if I doctor it with some finely chopped porcini mushrooms, walnuts, fresh herbs. I am so sick of cooking two different dishes every night, so vegan meat helps.

Skyejuly · 03/01/2020 10:38

Why does MN hate vegans?

IncrediblySadToo · 03/01/2020 10:40

Ah the typical non returning goady fucker. Why do we bother responding to them ?!

Pukkatea · 03/01/2020 10:42

If you're vegan and hate the thought of 'dead animal flesh' - would you not prefer, if someone is going to eat something that looks and tastes like meat, that it be an artificial version and not the real thing? If that not an improvement based on your principles?

I hate all or nothing evangelists. Reducing your meat consumption helps animals and the environment even if you don't cut it out completely. You can't make a real difference with a tiny number of people doing things perfectly, only with the majority of people trying.

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 10:42

@IncrediblySadToo Suckered again!

PuppyMonkey · 03/01/2020 10:44

I wouldn’t describe myself as a vegetarian but we haven’t cooked meat in our house since last August mainly due to kids going veggie. The “fake meat” stuff is not all the same, some of it is fab (Linda mcC mozzarella burgers, I’m looking at you Grin).

gamerwidow · 03/01/2020 10:45

It’s not, although I know that some meat eaters will eat it on slimming club plans, because it’s meant to be lower in fat. Or to have a meat free day
If you’re having a meat free day you didn’t have before then surely that’s the very definition of eating less meat?

BoxOfBabyCheeses · 03/01/2020 10:45

I haven't read all posts, but I have been wondering about something that maybe some of you veggie's/vegan's can help answer....

Would you ever eat the veggie burger's that "bleed" or would that be too far for you? I just don't understand who will want to buy them?!

LucaFritz · 03/01/2020 10:46

YANBU its all processed unhealthy crap and when real research is done into it in a few years time i bet it turns out it's even more unhealthy and damaging than real meat ever was. For now its just another fad people try tell themselves is healthy anf better for you Hmm I'll stick with my fresh healthy vegan food that doesnt come from some Frankenstein laboratory thanks

gamerwidow · 03/01/2020 10:48

BoxOfBabyCheeses
This question isn’t for vegans. Fake Meat that bleeds isn’t a product designed for vegans its a product designed to wean meat eaters off of meat.
The question should be if you have a meat substitute that bleeds would meat eaters choose it over real meat.
Meat eating is unsustainable on the scale we eat it now. The challenge is to get people to give it up.

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 10:52

@BoxOfBabyCheeses When I ate meat my burgers didn't bleed and I don't know anyone who eats a bloody burger. So who knows Confused

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 10:53

Many people do like their burger pink though, so it's trying to replicate that.

Gonetoget · 03/01/2020 10:54

Josefkeller.
How long have you been a meat eater (vegetarian) ?
Why did you decide to become a meat eater (vegetarian)?
What’s it like being a meat eater (vegetarian) ?
What do you eat in a typical day?
I like vegetables (meat) me, I’ve got to eat vegetables (meat) everyday?
Don’t the animals (plants) scream whe you kill them ?
Just a sample of some of the fuckwit questions I have been asked, substitute me asking a meat eater the equivalent as illustrated above and you get an idea of how tedious it is.
And I don’t really announce ‘ I AM VEGETARIAN DON CHA KNOW’ these questions usually comes about when I am minding my own business.

I don’t pry into the lives of meat eaters, so I am not sure why they feel the need to challenge/ enquire into mine., but I can pretty much guarantee that ‘ but I luvs me meat ‘ variant will pop up at some point int the conversation. Who gives a fuck if you love the taste of it.
For the record I don’t particularly mind people asking, as long as they are respectful, but meat eaters do get prickly when you get them thinking about their dietary choices and of course the counter argument of but ‘ I luvs meat’ seems to makes it all ok in their head. Bless.

AryaStarkWolf · 03/01/2020 11:03

If we wanted to eat less meat we would but we dont

Are you the self appointed spokesperson for all meat eaters? Grin I know lots of meat eaters who have reduced their meat eating by replacing a meal or two with quorn

FrangipaniBlue · 03/01/2020 11:04

With the exception of 1 person, every single vegetarian and vegan I know doesn't eat meat for ethical/environmental reasons and absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with not liking the taste of meat.

What a bizarre query ?!
