To not get the vegan meat thing.

I just don't get it. Surely if you're vegan/ vegetarian you don't want things to taste of meat which you have foresworn, so why want a fake meat taste. I just don't get the fake steak, fake bacon etc thing. Be vegan/ vegetarian or just eat meat. It's one or the other.

OP posts:
JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 10:05

wow, some non-meat eaters are very prickly aren't they?
It's a reasonable question, since when are people not allowed to wonder about random things on this forum?

I don't get it either, I prefer to buy a lot less and more expensive meat when it means animals are treated better, but I do like meat. And I am omnivore, so meat is not bad for me.

There ARE a lot of research showing that the fake-meat business is not as great as people make it out to be.

AllergicToAMop · 03/01/2020 10:05

@MaggieAndHopey yes. And that's why I said eat locally, seasonally and less of it.
Tbf it is hard to fully compare the complete emissions when companies making the substitutes won't release the info...

Chesneyhawkes1 · 03/01/2020 10:06

If you aren't vegan why does it matter to you?

I love the taste of meat! I don't eat it for other reasons.

CallarMorvern · 03/01/2020 10:07

I don't eat meat and don't like fake meat, with the exception of Linda McC's sausages. I get why others would want to eat the fake meat, but I find it frustrating when perfectly good vegetarian options (ie. things made from vegetables) in restaurants are swapped for fake meat versions and I find there is nothing I can eat.

MaggieAndHopey · 03/01/2020 10:08

@AllergicToAMop - that's interesting. Who doesn't release their carbon emission info?

gamerwidow · 03/01/2020 10:08

Anything that gets people eating less meat is a good thing. If eating meat substitutes makes it easier for people to transition to a plant based diet or reduce their meat consumption then I can’t see why anyone would object. I can’t stand this purity of ideology crap where unless you’re doing something in a prescribed way you shouldn’t bother. People eating meat substitutes doesn’t take anything away from people who don’t eat them. The net result is less meat gets eaten which is a win how ever you got there.

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 10:09

DD eats some meat replacement foods for convenience but on the whole I make her food from scratch eg a vegetarian curry using chick peas for protein or beans in a chilli. We eat less meat as a result as we’ve found we don’t miss meat in those dishes. I do find those that judge vegans and vegetarians very defensive.

pollyputthepastaon · 03/01/2020 10:09

What an ignorant OP. I love meat. But I’m vegetarian for ethical reasons. If you actually researched it you would be too. Meat alternatives are therefore brilliant for anyone who wants to eat something that tastes of meat, and no animals are mistreated to create.

Also bacon, sausage etc are all categorised as cancer causing by cancer research U.K.

To not get the vegan meat thing.
FamilyOfAliens · 03/01/2020 10:10

I have a colleague who has gone vegan due to environmental issues ... so is happy for orangs, elephants and clouded leopards to be killed and have their habitat destroyed

I hope you’ve made your colleague aware of how morally superior you are?

Grumpos · 03/01/2020 10:10

Because I don’t want a burger that tastes of lentils or cauliflower? (Well sometimes I do bc I also love veggies)
But mainly bc when I want a certain type of meal or snack it may serve it better to use a meat substitute, ie - some Quorn “chicken” nuggets or a viva burger (soooo good).

Choosing to eat meat or not is usually based on ethical reasons, so still fancying the odd savoury, meaty flavouring in a burger isn’t weird surely?

You don’t give up loving the taste of a fag when you quit smoking (usually), you still think OMG CIGARETTE SmileSmileSmile but you give it up for your health and health of those around you mainly (amongst other reasons). It’s not that different with meat is it

Cohle · 03/01/2020 10:11

What a stupid goady question. If the OP had given it more than a second's thought the answer would have been perfectly obvious.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 10:11

It's a very common question that vegans are probably tired of hearing and one that would take about ten seconds of thinking to realise that vegans have an objection to the fact that it comes from animals and not to the taste and texture. Of course some vegans will avoid fake meat because it reminds them too much of meat and that it is an animal product but the actual taste and texture are not offensive to most vegans and may be enjoyable. What is objectionable to them an an animal is killed to produce it.

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 10:11

Well said @Grumpos

Grumpos · 03/01/2020 10:14

@JosefKeller
Whilst it’s great that YOU choose to buy more ethically and less often, that does not stop the millions of people who pop into the supermarket and want to pick up a whole chicken for 3 quid.

So whilst it’s a great thing to be more ethically minded, it does not make you any different to other meat consumers in the long run.

Just as long as you know that

MakeLemonade · 03/01/2020 10:16

The outrage and I wouldn’t eat that/feed it to my kids over quorn etc whilst letting them eat meat - a proven carcinogen by the WHO - is a rich irony.

JosefKeller · 03/01/2020 10:17

I am well aware that people buy cheap - and unhealthy! - meat, just as they buy Primark clothes made using near-slave labour.

I just laugh at people who try to shame meat-eaters. I am not. Nothing wrong in liking meat, that's my point.

Gonetoget · 03/01/2020 10:17

Because they like the taste, texture of meat but don’t want animals killed for it.
I’m long time vegetarian, I started off with these products they’re a good way to transition into the diet, but don’t really eat them much nowadays - 30 years later.
That’s common sense surely?i

PhilSwagielka · 03/01/2020 10:18

Because they don't have bits of gristle in them. That was one of the things that put me off meat. I like the texture of Quorn etc. as well.

AllergicToAMop · 03/01/2020 10:19

@MaggieAndHopey afaik McCartney is one of them.
As I said. All food should have total emissions on imo. Like the nutrition label. It would make it so much easier for people! And if it was easier, I am sure more people would make better choices.

strawberrieshortcake · 03/01/2020 10:20

@WellErrr and how many people in the UK only eat local meat and never eat meat at restaurants or fast food places which is full of factory farmed meat?

Angel2702 · 03/01/2020 10:20

People get frustrated by the constant obsession with this question.

No it isn’t always as healthy but generally the types of product are imitating quick convenience food not a cooked from scratch meal. In the same way a meat eater doesn’t expect a McDonald’s to be a healthy treat.

I like the meat replacements but they aren’t the basis of my entire diet.

It’s great to have more choice when eating out.

strawberrieshortcake · 03/01/2020 10:21

@MaggieAndHopey exactly. It’s such a stupid deflection when people talk about local British meat because barely anybody actual eats it.

strawberrieshortcake · 03/01/2020 10:23

And it’s so hilarious when people point out. ‘oh vegans eat palm oil and avocados and soy’ when meat eaters eat all of these things too?

Gonetoget · 03/01/2020 10:29

Why do meat eaters feel the need to say ‘ I luvs meat me’ on these threads and in rl, you get this defence response regardless - I’ve just ordered a veggie lasagne in Wetherspoons ‘ I luvs meat me’ , or stated the simple fact that the industry is cruel ‘ I luvs meat me’ . I don’t go round saying ‘ I luvs broccoli me’ when someone orders a steak in a pub, or challenges my dietary choices, which meat eaters feel entitled to pry into.
I don’t even tell people I am veggie, or comment on other people’s food choices until I am asked and then I’ll just politely explain that I find the industry unethical, but you still get the ‘ but I luvs meat me’ response.
Bizarre.

squeekums · 03/01/2020 10:30

It's so meat eaters will eat less meat

If we wanted to eat less meat we would but we dont
