AIBU to think that McDonalds need to up their vegan game

As a vegan the start of veganuary is always really exciting when all the new companies bring out their vegan stuff - this year seems to be particularly great - Greggs have brought the vegan steak bake, kfc have their vegan burger and McDonald’s....well they’ve taken the horrible goujon things they have in their veggie burger, sold them separately and marketed them as a new vegan meal! Grin AIBU to think that they need to seriously up their game?

There's always so much hostility towards vegans. I just don't understand it. No one's forcing anyone to be vegan but just trying to spread awareness and speak up for the animals that have no voice. I remember as a child seeing undercover footage of the meat and dairy industries and as an animal lover I was heart broken. I became vegetarian at 12 but it was difficult back then especially eating out and only ever one thing for a vegetarian to eat and usually not very nice. I started eating meat again at 30 but can't morally justify it and I block out what it is. I would love to try being vegan now and think it's great that high street food chains are trying to introduce vegan choices.

xmastreestar · 02/01/2020 22:25

I am not vegan. Love McDonald's. But not sure I would trust it to take my veggie friends to, or suggest going there.

DrCoconut · 02/01/2020 22:33

The BK bean burger has also been ruined by "improvement" but not to the same extent as McD veg deluxe.

CactusAndCacti · 02/01/2020 22:39

Also, why have KFC brought the vegan burger out when their chips are cooked in the same oil as some chicken products?

KFC chips aren't that great anymore, I tolerate them but prefer the ones from BK.

You want to eat only plants but expect a restaurant which specialises in meat to fully accommodate you?

Just go to a garden centre and eat the plants there, or something.

I think I might find a vegetarian restaurant and start whinging about it not selling meat.

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2020 22:48

McDonald’s sells vegan food @DowntownAbbey. It’s just bad. People want them to improve it, not start something totally new.

elmosducks · 02/01/2020 22:54

@DowntownAbby a fine post for proving the point that you can't reason with stupid.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 02/01/2020 22:56

This is just such a ridiculous thing to say.
Vegetarian restaurants by the very word vegetarian do not sell meat.
Hence the name.
General restaurants though, they don't call themselves meat restaurants, do they?
They're just food restaurants.
Why do some people have such a problem with there being more choices?
Have your steak or burger or whatever, nobody's stopping you.
More choice is a good thing surely.

You want to eat only plants but expect a restaurant which specialises in meat to fully accommodate you?

Where has the OP said that, have I missed an update? Confused
Since when does it specialise in meat anyway?
It's a fast food restaurant. with lots of veggie options too.
It's Mcdonalds, not MeatDonalds.

FaFoutis · 02/01/2020 23:07

This is a new low.

QuestionableMouse · 02/01/2020 23:13

@gingersausage

I've worked at McDonald's for seven years now and even with the old style burger there was very limited demand. Maybe its just where my store is located but the people wanting a veggie option seem to pass us by.

gingersausage · 02/01/2020 23:20

McDonalds already sell a vegan burger ffs!! All we’re asking is for it to taste halfway decent.

I don’t understand why omnis are so fucking threatened by vegans. Or where they get the stupid idea that they should only be allowed to eat plants 🙄.

I cooked lunch for 9 people on Sunday; 2 vegans, 3 veggies and 4 omnis (1 with severe nut allergy) I made 2 different curries, bhajis, pakoras, naan and 3 types of rice dish. Every single thing was vegan and nut free, and guess what? Not one of the omnis wasted away or died from lack of meat.

superfandango · 02/01/2020 23:34

McDonald’s is where people who do things like Veganuary go for a guilty pleasure (looking at you, DSis, who is vegan until she gets a hangover or goes on holiday). They’re the non-ethical vegan equivalent of the post night out dirty kebab. McDonald’s probably know that so don’t see the need to offer much in the way of vegan fare.

UndertheCedartree · 02/01/2020 23:35

@downtown - rtft! Mcdonalds already accomodates vegans and has done for many years. People are just saying they don't find it very nice in comparison to for example the Burger King vegan burger. Why do meat-eaters get so outraged that not everyone wants to eat the same as them?!

UndertheCedartree · 02/01/2020 23:40

@questionable - maybe it is where you are. I remember in the late 90s before they brought out a veggie burger, vegetarians would order a Big Mac with no meat! So many people did it they had a set price for it - so obviously demand even in the 90s where I was. I think the veggie burger came soon after.

EugenesAxe · 02/01/2020 23:46

Probably been said but if you are vegan why on earth would you support the business of a mass meat producer and moreover, environment killer? Just don’t support them! I think world governments should really ban all these kinds of mass meat-based companies for environmental reasons, screw capitalism and free markets.

There’s a stall at Greenwich market that did the most amazing vegan wraps. Get down there if you want tasty vegan food; it was mind blowing. No salt or sugar either I think; I don’t know how they did it. I like salt and I never noticed the lack of it.

Shadowboy · 02/01/2020 23:48

Why would any right minded vegan eat in McDonalds? The point of veganism surely is animal welfare and the impact of eating meat on our planet right? (I’m 100% not vegan by the way!) McDonald’s stands for everything that is wrong with food and animal husbandry and the environment.

Iggii · 02/01/2020 23:49

Greenwich market! Now why didn't I think of going there when I want some vegan food on the go!!! D'oh
(Only 400 miles away)

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 02/01/2020 23:52

There’s a stall at Greenwich market that did the most amazing vegan wraps. Get down there if you want tasty vegan food; it was mind blowing

I'm sure it is mind blowing but not exactly within reach of everybody wanting vegan food, is it Grin

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 00:01

@eugenesaxe - because sometimes my children have parties or meet-ups at McDonalds - never had one at Greenwich market!

I think we all know McDonalds is pretty shit - why is it just vegans or those eating a vegan diet that can't go there?

Hustssleeping · 03/01/2020 00:03

Can they up their gluten free game? When on holiday in Portugal I had ny first McDonalds on 20 years. It was just as I remembered it... Hmm

UndertheCedartree · 03/01/2020 00:03

@shadowboy - you could say that of big supermarkets too and other cafes and restaurants. Vegans have to get food somewhere.

Nuttyfellalovesnutella · 03/01/2020 00:05

I’m not a fan of veganism but I do like the odd veggie burger. I remember when the McDonald’s veggie used to be round and tasty. Now it’s pretty horrible and too spicy.

However McDonalds isn’t the right place for a serious vegan.

Sagradafamiliar · 03/01/2020 00:17

Some people just like a vegan diet, for food preference reasons, not ideological ones. So many meat eaters here telling vegans they aren't veganing right 😂

letsghostdance · 03/01/2020 00:33

Absolutely love "I'm not a fan of veganism". That's a good one.

One reason that it's important to get veggie/vegan stuff in to chains is because at this point in our climate history it's incredibly important to normalise it to try and move as many people away from meat as possible.
