Cyprus is no longer a safe place for (young, single) women to holiday?

The teen went back to her ONS's room for consensual sex. When there, 11 of his mates burst in and filmed while three of them then raped her. She went to the police and reported it. They were detained. They said it was consensual and was "with love" (I kid you not!). She was interviewed at length with no legal representation and the police decided she was lying. She was then charged with the crime of making up a crime and has been unable to come home since the summer. The guys were all allowed to return to Israel where some of them have since said things indicating she wasn't lying at all and I'm pretty sure the video was shared (from memory, which may be wrong). She's had psychological evaluation saying she's suffering badly from PTSD.

It's worth noting that the Cyprus is a very popular destination for young Israelis to let off steam before they start national service and there's a strong political tie between the two.

So, AIBU to say that Cyprus is no longer a safe destination for young woman? If the worst happens to you and you report it and the police think you're not a credible witness, YOU will end up in jail. Knowing how traumatic reporting something like a stolen wallet in a foreign police station can be, the idea that a woman would be interviewed without legal representation in a state of severe distress, however that manifests, and then not believed and charged means that men have been given free rein to rape in Cyprus. Especially if it's in a potential "grey zone".

I trust the DM more than the Bible, wouldn't you?

Do you really think the bible is more factually correct than the DM? that is funny.

ohnomesandwiches · 30/12/2019 22:33

@FairytaleofButlins I'm talking about court cases, not political coverage or gossip columns.

So, I'll ask again. Do you truly believe papers make up content in court coverage?

june2007 · 30/12/2019 22:56

Well someone is making up facts obviously as what we here changes. But is there a miscarriage of justice, Yes i believe so. Is there proof beyond doubt she was raped. I am not so sure but I don,t belief that she was given a fair hearing. (personally yes do think she was raped but if I was on a Jury I could not say beyond doubt based on what I have heard.)

PanicAndRun · 30/12/2019 23:07

She didn't even call the police herself ffs, so how can they claim she got embarrassed by the video and decided to make up a lie and report rape I don't know.

PanicAndRun · 30/12/2019 23:10

Well someone is making up facts obviously as what we here changes.

By the sounds of it it's the police. They failed to gather evidence properly, later for it to be found by other guests given the same(still not cleaned, dirty) room and journalists.

Then they denied it on the stand and said it was the journalists planting the evidence.

BarbaraStrozzi · 30/12/2019 23:16

I believe her.

(The standard of "beyond reasonable doubt" applies to jury members. The rest of us are at liberty to form our personal opinions based on what seems to us to be most likely. And in any case the key word is "reasonable" - not "beyond all doubt whatsoever.")

I believe her and will boycott Cyprus forever, Greek and Turkish sides I'm afraid. I have two daughters and will never allow them to set foot that country whilst I can prevent it.

The behaviour of the Cypriot police, judges, as well as the Israeli youths who were accused is absolutely revolting.

In my younger days I used to go on club 18-30 type holidays, used to get drunk and get off with boys (never personally had a one night stand but don't judge those that did), so this is very much a case of there but for the grace of God go I, this could have happened to me or any of my friends.

I hope that Cyprus sees a permanent dent in tourism from the UK and other European countries as a result of this.

All newspapers put a spin on the stories that they write. It doesn't matter whether its a court case or not, they lie by either omitting information or putting a spin on the story.

If you don't believe that, then why are there so many different versions of this?

What an awful case. I agree that tourists should boycott Cyprus in future. I imagine they are taking this action as they're worried about their tourism.

I believe her.

Sagradafamiliar · 30/12/2019 23:48

God, some misogynists cannot stand to see threads full of support for rape victims and insist on trying to ruin it by spending literally hours arguing, being vile and making it all about poor old men. Very distasteful.

Funnily enough on male forums there's no defender for the 19 yo. No derailing . No whataboutery . No NAWALT. No we weren't there we can't possibly know. And those are truly irrational, disgusting, hateful ,angry and violent comments.

It's ironic how we always get accused of hate.

Polkagirls · 30/12/2019 23:57

I feel naive to be surprised and upset at how there could be such a blatant miscarriage of justice in an almost neighbouring European country. I am sure that there are certain degrees of miscarriage in every country and this country does not always present a shining example of how to prosecute rape cases.
However- to refuse to hear evidence supporting her claim of rape, including that from a pathologist, is sickening. Moreover, this poor young woman has been held in prison for nearly 6 months for very dubious reasons.
My family has visited Cyprus regularly- we will not be visiting again until there has been a fair trial at appeal.
It has been suggested that the Cypriot legal system was trying to protect tourism or certain international relations / trade deals. Well I hope that backfires. UK tourists visit Cyprus far more than any other nations. We should expect better treatment of our citizens. #boycottcyprus

ohnomesandwiches · 31/12/2019 00:01

@BoneybackJefferson Many newspapers use spin but NOT in court coverage. Have you read all coverage from every news source? As I said before I have reported many a court case and know the penalties involved for printing inaccuracies. In a court case of this length, it is not possible to report on all aspects of evidence due to space restraints so some coverage may include different aspects but that is not the same as spin.

Obviously when the verdict comes through that's a different story but I imagine many news outlets will be playing it safe as it seems likely an appeal is on the horizon.

ohnomesandwiches · 31/12/2019 00:05

@BoneyBackJefferson Also re what I believe, I have been the one overseeing editorial decisions for many a year so it's not about believing, it's experience at the coal face.

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether · 31/12/2019 00:06

I believe her. I would never have visited Turkey or any other Middle Eastern country anyway due to their hatred of women but will now be striking Cyprus and Greece off too. But we’re being naive if we don’t think this happens in Britain. The first response from most people to a rape case is that she must be making it up, the second that she must have asked for it. I say she because rape is perpetrated most commonly by men against women, and oddly when male rape does happen the first response would I expect be rather different.

@ohnomesandwiches

Of course I haven't but I have read 7 or 8 variations on this. All contain slightly different versions.

As I said before I have reported many a court case and know the penalties involved for printing inaccuracies. In a court case of this length, it is not possible to report on all aspects of evidence due to space restraints so some coverage may include different aspects but that is not the same as spin.

but it is possible to change how someone is seen by omitting details, This is not printing inaccuracies, it is putting forward the information that you choose should be read.

ohnomesandwiches · 31/12/2019 00:29

OK, I don't have time to stay upp all night arguing. I meant mainstream media have been covering this story for weeks. You would need to read every paper's coverage from the start of the case to the verdict to compare it not just today's.

Picture this, there's an update concerning Donald Trump's impeachment trial. You have to cover it in 500 words. Think that's going to be the same as anyone else's when it's that concise?

Also, does anyone want to state what the spin is supposed to be any by whom? Seems a bit pointless bringing it up otherwise.

Emeraldshamrock · 31/12/2019 00:42

It's appalling to think that if I had gone to the police I could have been prosecuted for being raped I am sorry that happened to you. Flowers
The article I linked on the first page 23 years ago and Dublin girl went yo prison for lying about rape. My sister knew her from holidaying in wexford. She claims she truly believes they touched her but was made to say she was lying, she did wake up with men around her taking photos of her in her underwear. She was sentenced in a Cyprus prison for going to the police.
