There are so many threads with the New Year resolutions, weight loss discussions, advice and probably lies as well - so many words, so many things.
I have finally reached that point from which there is no turning back. I will do this, no matter what, but - please, help me. Those of you, the heroes who have really done it - please, name 3 main things that finally helped you to get rid of that weight.
Please.

Dollymixture22 · 29/12/2019 20:16

Namenumber5 - how far/ how long do you run? I have started running but it hasn’t made any difference to weight so I need to pick up the pace.

chillychicken · 29/12/2019 20:17

James Smith Academy - calorie fucking deficit.
Worth checking out. Logging everything into MFP is a chore at first, then it becomes second nature. Then you learn how to maintain. None of it feels like deprivation. I have wine, I have chocolate, I have fun. I just count all the calories.

Ostagazuzulum · 29/12/2019 20:17

Following with desperate interest....

HoneysuckIejasmine · 29/12/2019 20:17

Maintain a calorie deficit.
Eat less.
Move more.

Unfortunately I know all the reasons those second two might be hard, but it really is the only way.

I've lost 7 stone doing it. I regained 1 stone when I was too ill to do the "move more" bit. But I'm better now and ready to get to my final goal of 8 stone loss.

I used I can make you thin app by Paul McKenna. Helped to retrain my brain. That along with the 30 day shred and my fitness Pal for tracking what I ate.

Laiste · 29/12/2019 20:18

3 times i have lost largish amounts of weight.

Face it. Weigh yourself and sob.
Decide what you are going to eat.
Accept it's going to take a while.
Accept there'll be days when you can't do it (birthday meals out ect) but you'll get back on the wagon next day.
Write down what you eat each day and be honest.
Identify your problem times.
Think of a way to avoid food then.

NonUrinatInVentum · 29/12/2019 20:20

Eat less move more people are making my eyes bleed.

Keto - 8 stone in 1 year and kept it off for 3 years now. No calorie counting, no mad exercise, no hunger, no side effects except amazing energy and a slim healthy body for the first time in my life.

There's so much different advice here, I hope that it doesn't overwhelm you. Last year I reached my breaking point and knew I had to lose weight, but I had also failed a couple of different regimes before so this time I made it very simple for myself:

  1. Weigh myself daily for motivation/ to learn what was effective. Each day I would focus on losing one more lb. It made it really manageable in my head. Also the Lose 7lbs in a Month treads on Mumsnet were a great encouragement.
  1. Run for twenty minutes every day I could fit it in. I'd put my trainers on, set a timer on my phone and run around the neighbourhood till the timer went off. At first I had to run a bit, walk a bit but after a month I could run the full twenty minutes. I felt so proud.
  1. Eat fewer treats - wine only on Friday nights, no biscuits at work, takeaways every month instead of every week. I never managed saintly eating habits but all I had to do was do a little bit better than I had been doing and it made a difference.

I lost a stone and a half in three months. I've gained a little bit since it got to dark for me to run and but overall I have managed to maintain.

So my keys were simplicity and small steps. Good luck OP, hope you find what works for you.

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 29/12/2019 20:22

Slimming world. I lost 3.5st through diet alone then introduced HIIT training and running along with it to lose a further stone

leiaskye · 29/12/2019 20:24

Another one for slimming world.

I’ve always run, but I increased that from 2 to 4 times a week.

The SW rules that did it for me I feel were:

Attend the meetings, at least for the weigh in. The thought of getting weighed by someone else made me stuck to it!
Cut down on bread
Increased fruit & veg

Blankiefan · 29/12/2019 20:24
  1. Count calories to achieve a steady and sustainable calorie deficit
  1. Move more. I joined a running group and now do 2 x 5k runs per week.
  1. Lift weights. I see a PT once per week and this has helped my body composition significantly

But whatever you do - stick at it. I'm six months and 5 stone in. 2 more to go. You can only do it a pound at a time.

TrueWierdness · 29/12/2019 20:25

Lost 3 stone in 6 months. My Fitness Pal, Running at least 3 times a week and consistency.

NameChangeNugget · 29/12/2019 20:25

Lots of running, circuit training and spinning classes. Topped up by upping the protein and dropping the carbs.

Nearly 60 and now the same dress size as when I was 18. Love the lifestyle change too. Have so much more energy

fllinn · 29/12/2019 20:27

I lost 6.5 stone. 5 stone of that was November to March 2013. The rest drifted off slowly then I gained it back, and lost it again then gain it, then lost it again. I've always kept the base 5 stone off.

The 5 stone I lost by eating low carb - no bread pasta biscuits cake rice fruit and only minimal veg. It is easier to say what I did eat - fish, chicken, occasional red meat, cheese, high fat low carb dairy, high fat low carb nuts. It's boring eating but exciting watching the scale soaring down which made up for it!

I re-lose the weight each August/September through a repeat of the old diet then eat whatever I like in between. If I eat only between 4pm and bedtime I typically maintain my weight but I don't end up sticking to it. This cycle works for me though, I'll never constantly eat well so this keeps me at a sensible weight long term.

I lost an extra half stone recently for a medical requirement and I was given metformin to help (I have PCOS) and it did definitely help. I am still taking it and haven't gained anything back yet despite eating crap over Christmas.

Neverendinglists · 29/12/2019 20:28

Intermittent fasting for me! I read the science on it and it makes sense to me and works but I think you have to find a way that fits you. My husband struggled with not eating anything in between the last meal with the kids at 6 and pushing breakfast back till 10 whereas for me, this bit is a doddle (when I'm not drinking Wink)

Perid0t · 29/12/2019 20:28

I read the book Thinside out by Josie Spinardi and actually followed what she said.

I lost approx 7lbs (slowly - not what you want to hear) but effortlessly - eating whatever I wanted. This included a two week trip to America where I ate burgers and Oreos whenever I fancied.

It was amazing! I will never diet again.

gitehn · 29/12/2019 20:29

Calorie counting!

Forget low carb, low fat or whatever. Limit yourself to 1500 calories a day and you don't have to cut out any foods. I'm not saying eat 1500 calories of chocolate and crisps a day, but you can say save 300 a day for a treat and then have the other 1200 for nutritious meals. That's what I do. I lost a stone in the first month and a steady 5 pounds a month since. All shop-bought food has the calorie count on the label and you can calorie count homecooked food as well by downloading MyFitnessPal and logging each ingredient in by weight, it will work out the calories for you.

Ignore slimming word etc, it's all just calorie counting but with a load of pseudoscience added onto it to make it sound more "real".

twoblackdogs · 29/12/2019 20:31

@Fluffiest
Yes, advice aplenty, but the more the better :)
So much to think about. There are some things which are mentioned by most who have commented, so that's the direction towards which I must start to move. I am rereading everything from the start tonight, and then I shall make a list.
I shall do it.
There was that party this Christmas, and I was the fattest. I don't want to look that anymore. Never.

Slimming world. Sticking to plan stopping to group and starting running.

gitehn · 29/12/2019 20:33

Also, keto is still calorie counting. The people who lose weight on keto are losing that weight because by cutting out carbs, they are no longer eating enough calories to gain/maintain weight. If someone requires 1800 calories to maintain their weight, and their diet consists of 600 calories of carbs per day, they will only be eating 1200 calories if they cut out the carbs. Even if they add in a lot more protein, that is a lot less calorific than carbs.

Kevintherootvegetable · 29/12/2019 20:33

1:Move every day. Walking or running if you aren't in a gym. Look up YouTube for a body weight work out if the weather is bad so there's no excuse not to do it. Download strava or map my walk to track your pace and process. It's very satisfying to see!

2:Cut out the crap from your diet. Batch cook, portion and freeze healthy meals for work lunches and days when you're short on time for dinner prep.

3: For motivation, take pics of yourself and keep them in a progress photo album. You can do it weekly, fortnightly or monthly. I also weigh myself and track it on an app because I love seeing the graph going downwards. Again, the frequency is up to you. I do both of these weekly.

Also, drink water- at least 2lt per day and get a bedtime routine going to help your sleep improve. These 2 things are important in weight loss and general health, energy levels and mood. When you are tired and lethargic, you'll be less inclined to exercise and more inclined to make bad choices food wise.

You've made a decision to change your health for the better and that's fantastic.
Stay the course, it won't happen overnight but think of this time next year, when you will have changed massively. It's the best thing that you can ever do for yourself.

chipsandgin · 29/12/2019 20:34

3 day juice fast (not entirely necessary, just helped me break some habits & shrink my stomach) followed by 16:8 which is basically no breakfast, and smaller portion sizes for the other meals (you get used to it!). Also no drinking in the week - more or less, not always great at that depending on the diary...lost 3 stone in 6 months & have kept it off for a year so far.
