There are so many threads with the New Year resolutions, weight loss discussions, advice and probably lies as well - so many words, so many things.
I have finally reached that point from which there is no turning back. I will do this, no matter what, but - please, help me. Those of you, the heroes who have really done it - please, name 3 main things that finally helped you to get rid of that weight.
Please.

16:8 intermittent fasting. Has to be a “clean fast” i.e. only water, black coffee or black tea. I lost 10kg baby weight with no trouble at all.

Cut out sugar. Lost over a stone.

MadCattery · 29/12/2019 19:55

Track what I eat into my LoseIt! App, which communicates with my Fitbit to tell me how many calories to eat. Losing about a pound a week.

Disillusioneddaisy · 29/12/2019 19:56

Another vote for slimming world. It does work if you stick to it and you can still have a lot of carbs and filling meals, just with a few tweaks. Add some moderate exercise and/or plenty of walks into the SW plan and you'll see results very quickly.

Spitsandspots · 29/12/2019 19:56

Counting every calorie.

I weigh and log everything I consume on my fitness pal to ensure I don’t over eat after working out my TDEE. To finally realise that the 2000 cals a day advice was way too much has resulted in 21 llb weight loss that has stayed off.

tdeecalculator.net

I drink (far too much) wine, I eat chocolate/cake or whatever I fancy but if I do have a treat I make a cut elsewhere or the next few days.

Qwertyguerty · 29/12/2019 19:56

Noom! I stuck to it religiously for 3 months as well as lifted weights at a gym and I lost 1.5st

reenon · 29/12/2019 19:57

Calorie counting.

Eating a couple of hundred calories less than my total daily expenditure. For me approx 1800 calories per day.

And exercise.

Fatted · 29/12/2019 19:58

Stop putting myself last and start putting my own needs, like feeding myself, first.

OwlinaTree · 29/12/2019 19:58

Another vote for slimming world. I lost just over 3 stone and have kept it off for 2 years now. I'm around 9 st 22 bmi so slimish.

Pinksun12 · 29/12/2019 19:59

Meal plan from a nuitrionist (low carb, high protein), no alcohol, no sugar, clean eating, portion control, breakfast never before 10, workout 6 times a week (HIIT)

Dollymixture22 · 29/12/2019 20:00

calorie counting, planning meals and drinking much less wine

John470322 · 29/12/2019 20:00

I have lost 10kg over a year by cutting out odd snacks. I have also cut down slightly on the amount I cook. I now don't want to eat as much and have to make sure that I don't cook too large a portion as I can't eat as much as I used to.
I am a 72 year old man and my reason to lose weight was when I went to buy new denims I struggled to get into a 34 waist and had to choose to either buy a 36 waist or lose weight. I decided weight loss was the better option.

ageingdisgracefully · 29/12/2019 20:00

Setting myself a target of 1200 calories and sticking to it. For ever. Sad

Bluntness100 · 29/12/2019 20:06

Another keto/low carber here. Easy to follow and uou loose th cravings.

Kit19 · 29/12/2019 20:06
  1. Eating main meal at lunchtime and only soup/salad in the evening
  2. Taking up Couch to 5k - run 3 x a week plus 2 circuit classes
  3. Allowing alcohol/take away at weekend only

I don’t weigh myself but go on clothes size & look. Everyone commented at Christmas how much weight I’d lost which was brilliant 😊

PickledLilly · 29/12/2019 20:07

I did it last year by small sustainable changes like taking the stairs and thinking about whether I really wanted treats or if I was just joining in because other people were having them. That and drinking gallons of Coke Zero which I admit is the less healthy aspect!

I found it much easier to stick with than a faddy diet. Weight loss was slow and steady so it took me eight months to get to where I wanted to be but I've kept it off aside from a few Christmas lbs I’ll shift in January.

Galvantula · 29/12/2019 20:07

My Fitness Pal app. Actually sticking to the suggested calories as much as possible. If I know I'm having a big meal later or going out to a restaurant, I'll have a lighter lunch e.g some kind of salad to compensate as I love to eat. Crown Grin
It helps with overall awareness and I like the fact I'm not restricted with what I eat, just quantity.

Keeping treats smaller (e.g. mini chocolate of some sort), so I'm not missing out but not huge amounts of calories.

Weighing myself often. I used to think it was a bad thing, but it keeps your from sneaking weight back on. I don't obsess about it, but try to weigh at least a few times a week. It helps you to see patterns of feeling bloated at different times in your cycle too.

Ladies

Eating low carb high fat (see low carb bootcamp on here).
Going to bed with DD at 8 so I'm less exhausted.
Doing CBT (following the book Overcoming Low Self Esteem) to help overcome the emotional issues which led me to binge.

QueenietheCutie · 29/12/2019 20:12

Currently following the 121 Cambridge Diet, lost 2 stone 4lbs since beginning of November. On step 1 at mo but it moves through 4 steps till you get to maintenance so is totally doable as long term. Takes a huge amount of will power though! Also gradually increasing exercise as part of the regime.

Carlamity · 29/12/2019 20:12

Go to tdeecalculator.net , which helps you calculate your daily calorie requirement for weight loss. It also allows you to set daily targets for protein, carb and fat intake. I found low carb, higher protein and fat worked well for me. Enter these targets into My Fitness Pal app and stick to it daily, recording everything you eat.

Get a Fitbit or similar and do at least 10,000 steps per day. Combine with exercise several times a week. Sync your Fitbit with My Fitness Pal - you will get additional calories for exercise taken, you can choose whether to eat them or not.

If you stick to this, it will work. What also helps is group weight loss, it's motivating being in a group all trying to lose weight. I'd recommend www.ourpath.co.uk for this - it's an NHS approved app, low carb approach, with a personal dietitian for advice, lots of recipes and info and a group of 12 people you lose weight with for 12 weeks to chat with.

Grumpos · 29/12/2019 20:13

There is only ONE way to lose weight.
You have to consume less calories than you burn.
You have to be in a calorie deficit.
Going to repeat that. CALORIE DEFICIT.

It really doesn’t matter how you do that - high protein / high card / vegan / keto / kitkats!!!! It’s irrelevant.

The best way to stick to it is to count calories eating a balanced diet which includes moderately placed treats, so basically a 80/20 rule.

The rules of thermodynamics apply here. You can’t eat more than you burn. Even if that excess is cucumber and not chocolate.

NameNumber5 · 29/12/2019 20:14

Running

I run 3 times a week in an evening, it suppresses the snacking urge and burns calories so win win! Was never massively overweight but I'm 5'2 and very greedy Grin used to be 10 stone now rarely go over 8 1/2 and no major diet changes

lunar1 · 29/12/2019 20:16

Keto, I can honestly say it's changer my life. It only took me until 40 to try it!
