There are so many threads with the New Year resolutions, weight loss discussions, advice and probably lies as well - so many words, so many things.
I have finally reached that point from which there is no turning back. I will do this, no matter what, but - please, help me. Those of you, the heroes who have really done it - please, name 3 main things that finally helped you to get rid of that weight.
Please.

Less carbs, more fat/protein, lots of walking

JaceLancs · 29/12/2019 19:38

Going gluten free
Drinking less alcohol
Writing down or electronically noting what I eat eg my fitness pal or food diaries on SW
I’ve lost 5.5 stone on SW - 2 stone prior to that by going gluten free
Less than 2 stone to go to my personal goal - hoping to get there this year!!!

Karwomannghia · 29/12/2019 19:38

Counting calories and developing a love of salad, fruit and veg. Also include big flavours and some treats. Don’t have any snacks in the house and take healthy snacks do work. Weigh everyday. Repeat your target weight to yourself when exercising. Visualise the weight you want to be and the shape you want and believe it. Remember the first 2/3 weeks are the hardest.

FamilyOfAliens · 29/12/2019 19:38

Calorie counting with MFP.

I’ve lost 3 stone 9lb since April 2018 and have kept it off by sticking to smaller portions and less cheese!

Lippy1234 · 29/12/2019 19:40

Cutting carbs
Not missing meals
Ditching evening chocolate habit.

AgeLikeWine · 29/12/2019 19:40

1, Mindset. Obesity is not a ‘disease’. Obesity is a choice.

2, Eat a lot less carbs, particularly bread & sugar. Stop drinking alcohol. Eat a lot more lean protein and a lot more vegetables.

3, Move more. 10k steps every day as a baseline, then add strength exercises and higher intensity exercises on top of that.

As long as you go below the standard 2000 cals a day for a female ypi will lose weight. The lower you go beyond that threshold the faster you lose weight.

You can lower your daily calorie count by consuming less or exercising or both. However exercise is much harder as a method as you need an hour to burn 500 cals for a energetic treadmill walk. But that's like 2 slices of pizza.

Vegetables and protein are your friend as these foods tend to be lower in calories that carbs or fatty foods.

There is no need to go on any 'named' diet.

What it boils down to a lot in my opinion is will power.

Which do you want more? The taste of the biscuit or eliminating a half ounce?

It is hard esp if like me you comfort eat.

Angel2702 · 29/12/2019 19:41

Only thing that has worked and been doing it for 15 months now and maintains goal weight is calorie counting and exercise. I got an Apple Watch and downloaded Lose it free app. No cutting anything out as long as I plan my day and stick to calories I can eat anything. Not feeling deprived is what worked. I do bare minimum 30 mins exercise a day as it is easy to stick to rather than big Goals it’s easy to miss regularly. My husband was impressed and has lost over 4 stone having tried lots of other diets.

pinkpeoniesplease · 29/12/2019 19:41

Activity teaching watch to track steps and calories burned.

All foods eaten get entered into My Fitness Pal app.

You can't hide from the numbers if you do these two things and you'll see what works for you.

RyvitaBrevis · 29/12/2019 19:42

Giving up alcohol completely. It wasn't instant results but over the course of 6 months I lost at least half a stone.

austenozzy · 29/12/2019 19:43

The only way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit through portion control, food choices and exercise. Find healthy recipes using the foods you like, prep them ahead of time, and find several different types of exercise that you’re happy to commit to doing.

Lippy1234 · 29/12/2019 19:44

ouch321 I have to go quite a bit under 2000 calories to lose weight. I’d put on weight if I eat 2000 calories a day. I need about 1600 to stay the same weight and less than 1400 to lose weight.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 29/12/2019 19:44

Bariatric surgery then clean eating. No processed food and weighing everything. Really need to go back to it as I lost ten stone but put two back on.

Sierra259 · 29/12/2019 19:45

Cutting right back on bread/pasta and sugar tends to work for me best. Regular activity, including 3 20 minutes HIIT sessions a week. But mainly no sugary snacks!

ethelredonagoodday · 29/12/2019 19:46

Blood sugar diet and regular exercise (at home).

RoyalChocolat · 29/12/2019 19:47

Low carbing
Strength training
Reading "brain over binge"

feelingverylazytoday · 29/12/2019 19:47

Bought a smaller plate (portion control)
Ate more fruit and veg, cut out or cut down on all the obvious things that we all know are empty calories (sweets, crisps, biscuits, etc)
Do a lot more exercise. For me it was swimming, walking and stuff like squats and working out with weights indoors (very basic stuff).
I lost 5 stone over a couple of years and have maintained for about a year now.

BatRobin · 29/12/2019 19:48

5 stone loss - I changed my lifestyle, by making healthy eating and exercise priorities. I'd never go back to how I used to be.

sausagepastapot · 29/12/2019 19:48

Calorie deficit- work out what calories you need then don't eat that many calories. Re evaluate your calorie needs every few lbs lost.

My Fitness Pal and meal planning/prepping is essential.

James Smith (google him) is brilliant at explaining how simple it is.

hamstersarse · 29/12/2019 19:49

I do keto so no refined sugar and starches and I’m thin as a post BUT if I were to say one thing that works for everyone Is leaving a gap of at least 4 hours between anything you eat.

You CANNOT burn fat if you have insulin running through your veins

Thyroxine for underactive thyroid - weight increased by 3 stone but no change in diet 😥 after a pre menopausal lifetime of being size 8-10 - which was finally diagnosed. 🙏. Excess weight fell off and now a comfortable size 12.

I keep the weight off by a combination diet of 5:2 and 16:8 on less restrictive days plus formal exercise twice per day along with lots of general movement.

RhiWrites · 29/12/2019 19:50

Track what you eat.
Work out.
Follow a fixed routine.

Good luck!

Bodyposiftw · 29/12/2019 19:51

I can give you loads of advice on how to lose weight. Maintaining the loss is another matter.

Can't believe pp who said obesity is a choice. I see fatphobia is still going strong.
Not that I am obese ( UK size 14 for 5ft8) but bloody hell, some people's attitudes are unhealthier than extra pounds ..

Fcukthisshit · 29/12/2019 19:54

Slimming world and a bit more walking. I know a lot of mumsnetters don’t like it but if you follow it properly and sensibly (ie, lots of lean meat and fresh fruit and veg instead of huge amounts of “free” pasta) it definitely works. I’ve lost 3.5 stone since last February.
