There are so many threads with the New Year resolutions, weight loss discussions, advice and probably lies as well - so many words, so many things.
I have finally reached that point from which there is no turning back. I will do this, no matter what, but - please, help me. Those of you, the heroes who have really done it - please, name 3 main things that finally helped you to get rid of that weight.
Please.

Cutting out shit carbs
Smaller portions
More protein

So:

Eggs and Greek yogurt for breakfast

Lentil and veg soup and cheese for lunch

Chicken casserole and baked potato for dinner

Snacks are usually apples, dried fruit

Treats are small glass wine, dark chocolate

Rafflesway · 30/12/2019 23:21

Hi betternamechangeforthisone Firstly so sorry to hear you have the same problem I had. It is absolutely shit isn't it? (Although I know that sounds incredibly shallow when peop!e are struggling with life limiting illnesses and I used to tell myself this constantly. 😡)

I lost most of the 3 stone gradually over a 7 month period but certainly noticed a difference within the first 3 months. Are you sure you don't need a higher dose of Thyroxine if you aren't seeing any change? I was started on a very low dose but was soon increased to a slightly higher dose which made a massive difference. I also started the 5:2 diet at the same time as I began taking Thyroxine. I am now quite relaxed with the 5:2 days - probably have nearer 800 calories per day than 500 - and find by sticking pretty rigidly to 16:8 for the rest of the week, (trying to keep under 2000 calories per day) keeps me pretty stable.

I am also over 60 so need to be more disciplined than I would have been 20 years ago but find the 5:2 days have really curbed my overeating tendencies.

Hiyuthere68 · 30/12/2019 23:23

I stopped eating breakfast. I don't eat anything until lunch, then have a hummus or different vegan wrap for lunch and then whatever I fancy for dinner.

Snacking in the evening - I swapped chocolate for dried mango and graze protein bars.

I also started walking to work, about 30 mins each way. The weight has dropped off me over the past 3 months.

toomuchconfusion · 30/12/2019 23:27

I've lost 3.5 stone, since being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 months ago, through low carb/keto and some intermittent fasting.

I'm finding it really easy and feel confident I can keep it up, which is good as I still have a lot to lose. Most important bit is my blood glucose is consistently down to non diabetic levels which is what really matters.

BabyLEphant · 30/12/2019 23:30

Hi OP, good luck! So glad you are feeling motivated. So much advice! Much of it conflicting. The reality is they are all right. All these ladies have great advice and the best intentions. The key to weight loss and a healthy lifestyle is to find what WORKS FOR YOU FOR THE LONG TERM. Try some of these ideas out and aim to find a healthy way of eating and exercising that you can do for the rest of your life. There is no quick fix. But small simple changes can make a lifetime of difference. I've lost 1Ib per week over the last 2 years through eating whole foods and walking more. I've never been happier, healthier and not once hungry. Diets don't work. A healthy lifestyle you can enjoy forever is heavenly.

managedmis · 30/12/2019 23:42

The variety in this thread accurately indicates that not every diet works for everyone.

Some people eat porridge for breakfast and it keeps them full till lunch. If I eat porridge I'm climbing the wall with hunger by 10am.

If I eat a bowl of chilli and rice it makes me hungrier than if I just eat a bowl of chilli.

You need to realise what food fills you up and what nourishes you adequately.

If you are stuffing your face with food and are still hungry you are eating the wrong foods. Food should fill you up and satiate you.

@toomuchconfusion

Fantastic!

BarbaraStrozzi · 31/12/2019 00:16

I think that's right @managedmis. It's so dependent on individual physiology.

I've tried intermittent fasting and I cannot function - I get light headed and can't concentrate on anything, can't do my job properly. High fat low carb just made me feel ill (for very good reasons as it turned out).

Like @just5morepeas I've developed gall stones and am now on a very low fat diet. Despite making myself low fat vegan cakes (which have lots of sugar in) the weight is dropping off me. I'm the lightest I've been in over a decade and also feeling healthier and more alert than I've felt in years.

ferntwist · 31/12/2019 00:24

Cutting out all sugar (plus any sugary substitutes like honey, syrup, agave).
Eating as much fruit and veg as I want.
Making a big pot of vegetable soup every couple of days and filling up on it.

Notthebloodygym · 31/12/2019 00:31

Plenty of veg

Some protein but following Nhs/health advice on portion size.

Low-ish fat.

Wholemeal carbs, including bread.

1400 calories daily.

Peacocking · 31/12/2019 06:02

Eating a wonderful vegan diet, trying new fruit and veg all the time and avoiding too much vegan junk food. I'm a million times better in so many ways, I wouldn't ever want to go back. Lost plenty of weight, look healthier and seem to have regained the thinking skills and memory I genuinely thought I was losing!

Peacocking · 31/12/2019 06:03

Oh, and using MyFitness Pal app - best app ever!

NoSauce · 31/12/2019 06:25

Drinking only water
Eating of a small plate
No snacking
Walking for one hour at least

BrowncoatWaffles · 31/12/2019 06:52

Calorie counting with the Lose It app. Put in my weight (then 17 stone) and let it calculate how many calories I needed to lose two pounds a week. Noted down everything I ate and drank and never went over its recommendation. Lots of water, minimal snacking, 10,000 steps a day on a Fitbit and then the DDP Yoga app (six quid a month) to do 30-40 minutes three times a week in the living room while my son napped.

Six and a half stone down so far in eighteen months. About 10lbs to go I think (although less focused on the scales than I was).

Millie2013 · 31/12/2019 07:01

16:8ish, I’m fairly flexible, sometimes eat within a slightly narrower or wider window
I’ve relaxed over the hols, will tighten it up again after tomorrow
Will also cut down on the wine, which will help

spingly · 31/12/2019 07:08

Wow @BrowncoatWaffles well done!

surlecoup · 31/12/2019 07:56

No stories of noom success?

Majorcollywobble · 31/12/2019 08:04

Lost 30lbs 6 years ago and kept it off.
Weight loss which is gradual is the key - that’s the way it goes on in the first place .
Walking every day ( with the dog ) .
Breaking my obsession with food .
There’s no magic bullet for weight loss that’s either sustainable or affordable .

ChequerBoard · 31/12/2019 08:20

I have lost 7 stone 4 lbs this year by:

  • Tracking everything I eat, every day using the NutraCheck app
  • Setting myself a strict carb limit of 22g per day and calorie limit of 1200 per day
  • Eating healthily. Lots of salad and raw veg, no sweets or starchy carbs and very little fruit.
  • Gradually increasing my activity levels, walking more, using the stairs more.
MsTSwift · 31/12/2019 08:34

You need a shift in mindset
Amazing to lose 7 stone!
I’ve lost 1.5 stone in 3 months. Now normal bmi writing this on my turbo Grin

CavaNotProsecco · 31/12/2019 09:51

I lost 2.5 stones in six months on the 5:2 diet.

I loved that it didn't feel like a diet, as five days a week I could eat most things that I like, in moderation. No food was banned.

It also made me less hungry after a fast day, so I tended to eat less on days off too.

To ask how EXACTLY you have lost weight?
Cinders11 · 31/12/2019 09:53

Intermittent fasting using the 16:8 method
This means 16 hours fasting with an 8 hour eating window. After a week or two the fasting gets easier and you can eat whatever you like during the eating window.

pumpandthump · 31/12/2019 09:56
  1. Slimming world (which has caused 2 and 3)
  2. Planning meals around veg, where low carb veg is the largest component of everything I eat (including snacks) by far.
  3. Eating less flour, whether in cake, pastry or pasta.
AgentCooper · 31/12/2019 10:01

I’ve only lost about a stone over a few months but it feels like I’m doing it in a sustainable way (for me). I’m at work 3 days (2 year old DS the other days) and every day at work I do a spin class at lunch and eat low cal but healthy.
