To be so embarrassed

soembarrassing19 · 29/12/2019 15:22

DP and myself were having a small argument on Xmas eve day about how much we had spent on the kids. I accidentally rang the police from my pocket and they came round due to hearing us arguing. They said it was due to them having no response on the phone and believed it to be a DV call.
They came round and took us into seperate room and asked us questions. We all laughed about it in the end but they did say it would have to go to social care as kids involved but the most we would probably get was a phone call. So embarrassed that this has happened.
Worse still, we knew the police officers through work.

Ex partner obviously

LagunaBubbles · 29/12/2019 15:38

Of course you didnt "accidentally" call the Police. Either you phoned them or someone else did.

It is definitely what happened 100%! My phone is playing up, sometimes the lock screen is black. I was messing with it trying to get it on and must have done it then. Didn't even realise I had done it until they showed up and I looked at my call log.
We even asked the neighbours if they had heard us so we could apologise but none of them had.

Oh ofcourse this can happen. Some people!

My 2 year old called the police once, I was in the kitchen on the phone to my sister. I went back into the room and saw him by the phone, I took it off him and could hear a voice so I spoke to them and they said he had dialled 999, I explained it was an accident but according to her she could hear arguing!! Not true at all, I certainly wasn’t arguing with my sister and it was just a normal phone conversation. I explained that to her yet 10 minutes later still had the police knocking my door down about an apparent argument.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 29/12/2019 15:43

@SimonJT Sounds like that requires quite a lot of fairly vigorous activity to do that though. Accidental "butt dial" while you're having words in the kitchen? No.

cheesewitheverything · 29/12/2019 15:43

I'm impressed by the police here - excellent response.

soembarrassing19 · 29/12/2019 15:44

The police were lovely and it is so reassuring that they respond so efficiently.

It is normal protocol for social services to be informed if these is a call out to a domestic. There probably won't even be a call from them.

OP posts:
soembarrassing19 · 29/12/2019 15:45

@cheesewitheverything I was thinking the exact same. I guess the point of my thread was to show people they will respond if you use this tactic.

Schmoozer · 29/12/2019 15:46

Does not add up
Good follow up from coppers though

DisorganisedOrganiser · 29/12/2019 15:46

My phone seems to dial 999 at the drop of a
hat. Get the passcode wrong a few times, or just try to press to unlock button a few times and it goes to emergency call. Could easily happen in my pocket. It is ridiculous and so frustrating.

soembarrassing19 · 29/12/2019 15:48

@DisorganisedOrganiser that's the phone I have an iPhone and because the screen is playing up you can't see what you are doing all the time. I'm definitely getting it fixed now.

OP posts:
happycamper11 · 29/12/2019 15:48

You said in your OP you'd get a call and now that you won't get a call. As I said I had police out loads of times from me calling and once when my ex called them and said I was kidnapping them and taking them abroad so they had to come and do a welfare check. SS weren't notified about any of this - it isn't standard! They were very clear about notifying me that the HV and school would get a report so it's not that I didn't realised and just didn't hear from them.

AHintOfStyle · 29/12/2019 15:49

Absolutely can people. This is my phone locked and I can make any call.

Typical MN response 🙄

To be so embarrassed
DisorganisedOrganiser · 29/12/2019 15:50

Ah yes if the screen wasn’t working you wouldn’t even know you were calling 999. I really wonder how many accidental calls they get because of it.

NoSauce · 29/12/2019 15:50

Right but that is different to what happened here. The OPs phone was in her pocket. Unless she’d already phoned the police earlier it’s quite bizarre that it would randomly them again.

SimonJT · 29/12/2019 15:51

@Blackberrybunnet I didn’t know that some phones vibrate when you make calls.

HoopDeDoop · 29/12/2019 15:51

How do the police know which address to attend if you pocket dial them from a mobile?

IAmLEA · 29/12/2019 15:52

I have accidentally called the police before however my phone sets off a really loud (optional I think) alarm saying it's about to call the emergency services so I have been able to hang up before connecting!

soembarrassing19 · 29/12/2019 15:52

@happycamper11 they definitely notify social care in my locality. I know that 100% through work.

I said in my original post that the most wed probably get was a phone call. 🙄 not that we'd definitely get one. He even said he'd be surprised if we did.

We weren't even arguing with raised voices. The police actually said they had come out as they could here arguing in the background and they had no response from the caller.

My phone never vibrates when I call people. Would have had no idea I had called from
My pocket.

OP posts:
IAmLEA · 29/12/2019 15:53

@HoopDeDoop Phones can VERY easily be tracked.

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/12/2019 15:54

My new iPhone has almost called the police a few times - it gives you a countdown if you accidentally knock the emergency call button on the lock screen. I’ve nearly called a few times so I do believe the OP.

TheNameGames · 29/12/2019 15:54

If you’re so embarrassed, why have you posted this?

What part of the story are you asking people what you’re potentially being unreasonable about?

Groovinpeanut · 29/12/2019 15:55

Hmmmm, so at the exact time you were having an argument with your partner your phone just happened to bum dial the Police?
What a stroke of luck!
