To ask where you buy decent quality bedding these days

I feel like I'm forever searching for decent quality (doesn't feel like scratchy cardboard) duvet cover sets! I've tried Wilco, Asda and Argos. They're either hideous patterns or feel really hard / scratchy.

I look in dunelm yesterday and it was all frilly or cosy over £80!!!

King of Cotton used to be great but had a horrific set come from them this year. It was very expensive (Egyptian Cotton) and had bobbles/flaws in the fabric. I got a refund but wouldn't purchase from them again.

M&S has been great for our replacement set - Egyptian Cotton 230 thread count. If there is nothing suitable in the sale, hold on if you can, they often do 20% off home promotions.

I see that some posters have recommended Dunelm but I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole for bedding. It doesn’t last. My student children will testify. Higher end Ikea is better but it really is a case of pay more , get more.

We still have duvet covers and fitted sheets from our wedding nearly thirty years ago which feel wonderful and came from John Lewis. We have bedding from Next, M&S, Dunelm and House of Fraser which we aren’t really comfortable with.
Next bedding , in particular, seems very stiff and unyielding.
As for duvets... M&S have been the best for us as well as high end Ikea. Have thrown out Dunelm and Next pillows and cushions.. mainly due to the ‘crackle’ and the fact that feathers keep poking out .
I get so fed up with pillows ‘balling’ where they go lumpy. Still trying to find non-balling pillows.

Homescapes and Mitre here. The worst bedding and experience I've had was from Soak and Sleep. They sent a bedding set with a sticky grey stain across a pillow case, and then sold out of the design so I ended up with a king size set with only one matching pillow case. All they offered was a discount off another purchase. The duvet cover washed badly and looked like a rag within a couple of washes.

Some good buys from TKMaxx, as others have said.

AveEldon · 28/12/2019 20:30

JL, M&S, H&M
Ikea too thin
Dunelm too much polycotton

CorporeSarnie · 28/12/2019 20:46

We're near an M&S outlet and they sometimes have good quality Egyptian cotton sets in for very low prices (£15 for a super king duvet cover and pillowcases a recent find). Soak and sleep good for deep fitted sheets, and we like the Argos brushed cotton in winter, so snuggly.

White Company

La Redoute do some really lovely 100% cotton bedding. They always have good sales or offers on too.

QuestionableMouse · 28/12/2019 22:16

@koshkat I bought a set of the Dorma and hated it. It feels almost crunchy/scratchy even after multiple washes.

cadburyegg · 28/12/2019 22:16

We got our latest set from M&S a few months ago, king size, in a 20% off sale. I can’t remember how much it was exactly but it was less than £60. 100% cotton

QuestionableMouse · 28/12/2019 22:16

Ikea Gaspa was my go to but they've stopped selling it.

Thistle23 · 28/12/2019 22:19

I only ever buy it out Next .

DreamingofSunshine · 28/12/2019 22:26

Tk Maxx

woodhill · 28/12/2019 22:28

I like Laura Ashley or John Lewis

MarchBorn · 28/12/2019 22:36

I’ve never understood why people buy cheap bedding when on a per hour of use basis it will probably cost you less than almost any piece of clothing you’ve ever owned.

Say you spend 8h a night in bed and change your sheets once a week. That’s 56h week x 26 weeks a year (assuming you have two sets) = 1,456h a year. Assuming you buy new bedding every 4 years that’s 5,824h use you’d get out of it. On a set of super nice bedding at £300 that’s about 5p per hour it costs you to use it. Half that if you’re willing to wash, dry and replace in the same day.

Save up and yourself OP, you won’t regret it.

MarchBorn · 28/12/2019 22:37

*treat yourself

NemophilistRebel · 28/12/2019 22:45

Very much agree with pp

PrimalLass · 28/12/2019 22:50

TK Maxx. I got a lovely cotton king size set for under £40.

gingerbiscuits · 28/12/2019 22:53

Just bought some new sets from Bedeck online - they've got a great sale on! Top brands like Joules, etc - lovely quality & washes really well.

Wilmalovescake · 28/12/2019 22:56

I think Next bedding quality has gone downhill; it’s scratchiest than it used to be. I mostly go for Joules here.

Thatnovembernight · 28/12/2019 23:01

I bought two identical sets from Laura Ashley around 7 years ago. They are heavenly to sleep in and still in fantastic condition. I’d buy from them again if I needed to!

Tink88 · 28/12/2019 23:03

Thanks op you've just made me order bedding.
From next btw 😂

Likethebattle · 28/12/2019 23:06

I have Next and they are great. I bought one from Asda and it felt like paper and was so scratchy.

WonderWomanBra · 28/12/2019 23:08

Try Dunelm when they have a sale on.

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/12/2019 23:09

I never buy poly cotton.
I always buy in sales.
High thread count is worth paying for.
Having said the above , I don't pay the earth. I have John Lewis/ Laura Ashley/ bedeck and M&S mainly as well as a few bits of more high end. I expect things to last. I have mainly given up on elasticated under sheets and buy flat sheets to go over the mattress. They last longer than the ones with elastic in.

BlueJava · 28/12/2019 23:10

All of ours is plain white and from M&S or John Lewis. Egyptian cotton with a high thread count feels the best.
