Jolyon Maugham QC stating on twitter that he has clubbed to death a fox rather than calling for help to free it from netting in his garden.

Jolyon Maugham should be prosecuted for killing a fox

You don't. You call the RSPCA or a wildlife rescue which will have experts come and help

Working on the basis your branch is a decent one. I called several years ago and they declined to assist.

TheAlmightyFinch · 26/12/2019 17:59

From the Sunday Sport Twitter:

“Twatting a fox and then boasting about it on social media is perhaps evidence of an unsound mind. And that’s from the people who bring you stories of sex dwarfs shitting on carpets.”

OldCrone · 26/12/2019 17:59

whats the correct way to kill it then??

It should be shot with a rifle or shotgun or humanely killed by a vet.

koshkat · 26/12/2019 18:00

Then you get your gauntlets on and free the fox yourself. What you do not do is beat the bloody thing to death.

That’s a fair point. I’m not excusing the incident in the OP.

However sometimes situations arise which are less than ideal and the kindest thing is to do what you can to end the suffering.

Funnily enough several years later there are any number of wildlife places I could call which of course is brilliant!

Binterested · 26/12/2019 18:05

‘Then you get your gauntlets on....’

Sorry but Grin.

I am no fan of his. I find him obnoxious in the extreme. But I would have no idea how to free a trapped fox safely and if it was injured would think a quick death for the animal better than leaving it to suffer. Maybe he made a wrong call.

VivaLeBeaver · 26/12/2019 18:06

If he’s got Twitter and lots of followers he could have asked for advice, etc, contacts for local wildlife rescues. Believe me they don’t shut for Xmas.

LoveNote · 26/12/2019 18:06

@koshkat are you serious? you'd leave an animal to suffer? the RSPCA would not come out .......and if they didn't would likely be days later not hours!!

people weirdly think the RSPCA will attend everything!!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 26/12/2019 18:07

How do people kill fish when fishing?

LoveNote · 26/12/2019 18:09

maybe the fox was too injured? prob been struggling overnight and injured unlikely to survive.....

he maybe only hit it once.....he didnt say he beat it or clubbed it to death, mumsnet have decided thats what happened, not heard him say that

koshkat · 26/12/2019 18:09

He does not say that the fox was suffering. Merely that he felt the need to bash its brains in dressed in a fucking kimono. He thought it was funny. He boasted on twitter. He has always been a fucking wanker but this is a whole other step.

Don't know why you find the idea of gauntlets funny? We are very rural and they are very handy for dealing with wildlife. The last animal I handled was an injured badger and they were an invaluable piece of kit so not sure what is so amusing.

koshkat · 26/12/2019 18:11

No sorry, not true. The last animal I helped was an injured rabbit and no gauntlets required on that occasion. The badger though was distressed and very aggressive and I would have lost a finger or two had I not been protected.

Squigglypig2 · 26/12/2019 18:11

He probably was in a bit of shock and was over sharing. I can't imagine he killed the fox for fun. I've had to kill a mouse that had been badly injured by my cat before which I did by hitting it with a brick which was nearby and it was awful but given it was going to die a painful slow death I thought better of two evils. I cried when I got to work (luckily my boss is a country dweller so understood).

OneForMeToo · 26/12/2019 18:12

The rspca only care because it’s going to be high profile. Try getting them out for neglected pets in your neighbours gardens or tied up to trees left to rot and they don’t care. They require a tv crew or someone well known.

koshkat · 26/12/2019 18:13

I disagree Squiggly. He is a well known bastard.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 26/12/2019 18:14

We are very rural

Not all people are. Most aren't. Why on earth would they have gauntlets?

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 26/12/2019 18:17

The only person who knows what actually happened and in what circumstances is Jolyon Maugham himself. I don't even have any idea who he is.

Provincialbelle · 26/12/2019 18:18

He is a loathsome women hater with appalling views on subjects like sexual harassment and the reasons for women only spaces, but I doubt he’s stupid enough to have drawn attention to an animal cruelty crime. He will be trying to provoke a reaction but will have his defence prepared.

Binterested · 26/12/2019 18:19

All the foxes I have ever seen are in London - they are a real pest here and I can promise you no one in London has gauntlets. It’s just a funny concept that this is a normal household accessory.

Granted this may have happened at his country house - it may equally have been in London. We don’t know. But even in the country I’d imagine gauntlets are somewhat niche.

KareyHunt · 26/12/2019 18:22

My recollection is that the legislation just specifies "humanely". I'd say that would include whacking the thing across the head with a baseball bat. The only way to settle the argument to the contrary would be to find someone being convicted of the offence for that reason. I doubt you'd even find a prosecution to be honest, but I'm happy to be corrected.

VeryLittleOwl · 26/12/2019 18:22

Yup, RSPCA (or their Scottish equivalent) are pretty useless. Took a friend of mine a month and about a dozen dead sheep to get them to even come and have a look at a field near her.

SmileEachDay · 26/12/2019 18:26

I’m sorry but the irony of the situation is nearly as painful as the death inflicted on the fox.

He protected his hens, then killed a predator who tried to get into the henhouse.

He’s been bleating all day about how upset and anxious his chicken were because of the proximity of said predator,

And yet he can’t see the issue for actual human women who would prefer not to leave the door open to actual human Male predators.

beautifulstranger101 · 26/12/2019 18:27

He's a disgusting POS

tenredthings · 26/12/2019 18:30

why would anyone would post such a self damaging twitter post, especially on this famous fox hunting day. It's certainly got him a huge amount of bad press, I can't help wondering if there's something more sinister, coercive going on here. ( tin hat emoji)

SmileEachDay · 26/12/2019 18:31

And look! He’s been after doing it since November
