To want to throw this Christmas gift away

Fil and his wife have given my 2 year old (just turned 2) a Christmas train set. Its for a 3 year old and checking online it's some mega cheap tatty one with a Chinese name on the side. Its very very cheap and tatty looking. I'm worried about toxins in cheap toys from China.
They aren't short on money.
AIBU to give to a charity shop? It's so cheap looking I think they might be insulated with it though.

I would give it away based on the age suitability alone. My two year old still puts all sorts in his mouth and a train set for a 3 year old will likely have small parts.

Havaina · 25/12/2019 18:55

I'm not sure you mentioned in your post whether the toy is cheap or not? Can you clarify?

GruciusMalfoy · 25/12/2019 18:55

Set it aside for when he's three.

Twickerhun · 25/12/2019 18:56

Is it cheap do you think? Would it be embarrassing to give away??

misspiggy19 · 25/12/2019 18:56

I would give it away based on whether it has the relevant safety standards for kids toys.

EssentialHummus · 25/12/2019 18:56

Your kid your choice, but you seem slightly out to get them. I have a two year old - playing with 3+ toys / putting them aside until interesting for the child is the norm here. Toxins in cheap toys? Where are the rest of your toys from, exactly? Does it matter that it looks “cheap and tatty” if your little one would enjoy it? And what the hell does their income have to do with anything?

MotherOfLittlePeople · 25/12/2019 18:57

Is it the fact it's cheap when they aren't short on money or really because it's from China?

If it has lots off small parts YANBU but it sounds like the main point of this post is because it's cheap and then YABU. Be grateful they get your child something.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/12/2019 18:59

Everything comes from China these days.

You sound very, um, entitled.

TheNameGames · 25/12/2019 19:00

You seem very quick to dismiss it as cheap and even quicker to go online and do some “research” on it, on Christmas Day Confused

HoneysuckIejasmine · 25/12/2019 19:01

If you're worried about toxins then recycle it, don't give it to a charity shop!

joffreyscoffees · 25/12/2019 19:02

DD has received 3+ gifts and she's 17 months. They're fine, as long as they don't have small parts.

Sounds like it's not naice enough for you.

Sirzy · 25/12/2019 19:02

You researched the present?

You sound like the type who will never be happy

halocompanach · 25/12/2019 19:02

Keep it until he's three.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 25/12/2019 19:03

I'm guessing there is more going on here?

Bin it if it's full of toxins, don't give it to another kid!

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2019 19:04

Cheap is fine so long as it's not tatty, oh wait...

NobJobWinker · 25/12/2019 19:04

In my experience most 2 year oles can't distinguish between a cheap Chinese train set and one that was hand crafted by Swiss cuckoo clock makers

Cuddling57 · 25/12/2019 19:04

Do with it what you want but be grateful they got a present!

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:05

It's definitely not sold by a legit proper store. So probably won't conform to EU safety standards.

GlitterMagicPompom · 25/12/2019 19:06

If you are worried about toxins why give it away where it will affect another child??? Bin it is my advice.

Moominfan · 25/12/2019 19:06

Currently watching my 3 year old play happily with a hot wheels 5-10 set. Can you not supervise play? Be a shame to throw it

SleepingStandingUp · 25/12/2019 19:06

So op is it

"I think this toy is dangerous and full of toxins, Aibu to donate it to charity so a poor family can get the toxins instead?"

Or

"Aibu that if you're family are rich, they should icky buy you and your kids expensive presents and if they don't I'm entitled to give them away?"

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2019 19:07

Which safety standard do you think it might be breaking?
Can we see a photo?

ShiveringCoyote · 25/12/2019 19:07

Toxins are bad for your kid but fine for someone else's ?

Sirzy · 25/12/2019 19:08

Do you have a link to what your research came up with?

Babybel90 · 25/12/2019 19:09

If it doesn’t have the CE mark on then chuck it, the charity shop want want it either.

This year about 40% of MILs gifts have gone in the charity shop bag, that is an improvement from previous years when it’s been nearer 80%.
