To want to throw this Christmas gift away

Fil and his wife have given my 2 year old (just turned 2) a Christmas train set. Its for a 3 year old and checking online it's some mega cheap tatty one with a Chinese name on the side. Its very very cheap and tatty looking. I'm worried about toxins in cheap toys from China.
They aren't short on money.
AIBU to give to a charity shop? It's so cheap looking I think they might be insulated with it though.

Just seen it - it's not so bad!!!

Op if it's the one that has been linked too, I wouldn't give it to a small child to play with when I say small child depending on the child some being rougher than others but I'd avoid it for under 5s.
It looks like its meant to be a Christmas decoration round a tree rather than a toy to be actually played with. While I get what you are saying about toxins, I'd be more worried about bits snapping off it leaving sharp edges behind.

I totally agree with the comment that some toys say 3+ because of the very strict safety standards for under twos. But those are toys that are actually meant to be played with. The train in question looks more like a Christmas decoration.

Is there ANY evidence that it’s got toxins or is otherwise unsafe? Are there any product reviews? Any links to it having toxins? Most toys, even those sole in M&S, or JL, or Argos, are just cheap crap with hefty price tags from China. If you don’t like it, or feel insulted by it in some way, then by all means bin it, but if it looks safe and fun then why shouldn’t your son get a chance to enjoy it either now or next year?

Put it in the Xmas decoration box. My dc have a cheap Xmas train, that they love! It only comes out at Christmas and they play with it about 5 times around Christmas. I don’t leave them unsupervised with it as it’s fairly brittle (and I don’t want to have to buy a replacement) and also the battery compartment is not childproof. But they love it so I’ll keep it and not add to land fill until the have grown out of it.

Take the batteries out before you store it.

Does it have a CE mark? Is it available online from a semi normal uk retailer rather than a really dodgy ebay seller? If it is YABU to dispense with it.
Grandad is probably looking forward to playing with it with your son and will be devastated if you give it away. Explain hes a bit too young ATM but he can play with it once he stops putting in in his mouth, point put the age 3 on the pack if necessary. Personally I dont have problem with my 2 year old playing with 3 year old toys or older as I just supervise.

GlamGiraffe · 27/12/2019 04:57

Ate they online shoppers generally?
What type of shops do they shop in?
Is it a main present or a stocking filler?
If they are generous they probably didnt knowingly buy some tat and you may he mistaken, just get ot out occasionally when the grandparents come.
If it's an additional present they arent being mean.

It might be from a decent independent toy shop

LondonUnited · 27/12/2019 05:07

I’m really surprised OP is being given a rough ride here... I wouldn’t give that to a 2 year old to play with unless under my direct supervision (is that an option? Get it out once and then unfortunately it broke 😉)

Similar issue here with my (very wealthy) PILs who have given my children some printed cake toppers off eBay. Baking items from a high street shop or supermarket to use with DC: lovely idea. Printed ‘edible paper’ bought from eBay with no packaging, ingredients or idea of origin - no way will I be giving these to my children to eat, especially as one has multiple allergies!

AIBUToday - stop pretending this is about parenting because you are going out of your way to look for reasons to be mad at IL

  • its cheap
  • its Chinese (but would be fine from john lewis)
  • its 'toxic'
  • its not age appropriate (the only slightly legit complaint)
  • its unregulated
  • the CE mark must be fake
  • the shop is independent so not trustworthy etc...

you have no proof for anything your moaning about except the 3+ thing so just give it a rest, it takes a shit tonne of effort to be that petty, how do you even have the time at xmas?

simply say 'thank you but im worried about it being 3+ so we are saving it for next year' and wack it in your Xmas decorations box and hang it on your tree next year out of your DS reach - simple and non dramatic.
