To want to throw this Christmas gift away

Fil and his wife have given my 2 year old (just turned 2) a Christmas train set. Its for a 3 year old and checking online it's some mega cheap tatty one with a Chinese name on the side. Its very very cheap and tatty looking. I'm worried about toxins in cheap toys from China.
They aren't short on money.
AIBU to give to a charity shop? It's so cheap looking I think they might be insulated with it though.

I don't mind the amount spent. You can buy a book or puzzle for 5 pounds or less from argos. That would be perfectly fine.

There are lots of articles about counterfeit toys revealed to contain harmful levels of toxic chemicals

There was a news article the other day about some dolls from china been seized in Nottingham as they had higher than normal levels of toxins that can cause infertility so your right to be wary. I wouldn't even have plastic toys in my house let alone cheap unregulated ones from china

Sirzy · 25/12/2019 19:16

But do you have one to this specific toy?

MikeUniformMike · 25/12/2019 19:18

My house needs insulating.

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:18

It's not the cost of the gift. It's that it's definitely not sold by a reputable shop

My DGS is 16 months old and absolutely loves his sisters' train set.

It's a Thomas the Tank Engine one, has lots of track and trains that run on batteries with tunnels and everything.

I didn't buy it but I'm pretty certain it wasn't a massively expensive one (although I could be wrong).

Why do you think a plastic train set isn't suitable for a 2 year old?

If you sincerely believe it's highly toxic throw it in the bin, for god's sake don't pass it on to some other small child to inhale the fumes, or lick the toxic plastic.

Don't imported toys have to be up to certain safety standards?

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:24

LucaFritz yes something about containing dangerous levels of phthalates that are carcinogenic. I'm very particular about the toys I let in the house. If I'm worried it gets tossed. I definitely don't want my kids playing with unregulated toys from China.

Don't give it to a charity shop if you think it's not up to EU standards. Why should some poor child get poisoned at all??

halcyondays · 25/12/2019 19:25

They do but some sites sell directly from China and may not meet safety standards.

A charity shop can't sell toys without safety markings.

Deelish75 · 25/12/2019 19:25

If you think it has a dangerous level of toxins why the hell would you give it to a charity shop to sell on?

Tetran · 25/12/2019 19:26

Worried about it poisoning your child, happy to donate it to someone else, sounds nice. YANBU to get rid of any toy if you have concerns, but if you think it might be unsafe maybe don't donate it Blush

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:27

Find the article about toxic dolls could be sitting underneath Christmas trees across the UK. It does not stop them being imported and sold in non reputable stores.

I gave ds a book a few years ago. It stated on the back *not for under 36 months due to small parts".
It was about A5 size and 1" thick. I don't know anyone who could have fitted that in their mouth.

Mumpower123 · 25/12/2019 19:30

Chuck it asap! Had a friend but one for my son and we could smell burning within minutes and it had started to melt the battery

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2019 19:32

Can we see a photo then?

Spitsandspots · 25/12/2019 19:35

If I'm worried it gets tossed. I definitely don't want my kids playing with unregulated toys from China

But you want to donate it to a charity shop so another kid can play with it?

Patchworkquilt24 · 25/12/2019 19:37

It's a real shame that they've bought your child a present that they thought would be nice and this is what you're saying about it, on an Internet forum, on Christmas day. Some kids don't have a single present to open today.

Regretsandregrets · 25/12/2019 19:38

You should be grateful for receiving a gift for your child.Whether you like it or not or whether you want to get rid of it is entirely your choice.I cant understand all the fuss!

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:38

I said a charity shop would not want it so I'll be tossing it

2020BetterBeBetter · 25/12/2019 19:38

If I'm worried it gets tossed.

So why the thread if you probably intended to get rid of it anyway?

stupidtabloidheadlines · 25/12/2019 19:39

Put it in the freezer.

Costacoffeeplease · 25/12/2019 19:39
Hmm
Sirzy · 25/12/2019 19:40

The more you post the more you just sound paranoid!

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:41

Regretsandregrets the fuss is that they got my child an unregulated toy most likely from an unregulated store that could be potentially dangerous
