To want to throw this Christmas gift away

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 18:53

Fil and his wife have given my 2 year old (just turned 2) a Christmas train set. Its for a 3 year old and checking online it's some mega cheap tatty one with a Chinese name on the side. Its very very cheap and tatty looking. I'm worried about toxins in cheap toys from China.
They aren't short on money.
AIBU to give to a charity shop? It's so cheap looking I think they might be insulated with it though.

You sound like an ungrateful snob.

CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind · 25/12/2019 19:45

Oh Christ are you related to the MNer who wanted to put a teddy bear in her freezer to de-lurgy it because it came from China?

(best reply on that thread was from the MNer who said her BIL came from China and she was going to get her freezer ready Xmas Grin)

Ah, Christmas on MN. I love it.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/12/2019 19:47

I said a charity shop would not want it so I'll be tossing it
No, you asked if ywbu to donate a dangerous toy to charity

AIBU to give to a charity shop? It's so cheap looking I think they might be insulated with it though.

Your concern was they might be insulted not that you are passing on harmful toys

reallychristmasaaagain · 25/12/2019 19:47

I can’t tell if you have an anxiety problem over toys a little bit - but if it’s really a toy that doesn’t conform to UK safety standards then obviously bin it, I can’t see the aibu there.

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:50

CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind was the teddy from an unregulated store? Because I would bin it.
It's not that it's from China its that it's an unregulated product from China. I would be fine with something from China sold by marks and Spencer, John Lewis, or argos for example

You may be right to worry about toxins but the fact it has Chinese writing on doesn’t necessarily mean it’s dangerous. The device your typing from was probably made in China as are the clothes your wearing and likely the chair your sitting on.

AIBUToday · 25/12/2019 19:55

Goawayquickly I know. I'm perfectly fine with Chinese products sold by proper stores.

Chuck it out with no guilt
It really aggravates me when people buy totally unregulated unsafe crap off eBay or wherever. It’s better to buy nothing at all than fakes made with dangerous chemicals.

Schuyler · 25/12/2019 19:57

You can pretend you don’t care that it’s cheap but you mentioned cheap multiple times throughout your short post. Grin merry Christmas!

Elbeagle · 25/12/2019 20:01

Why on earth are you sitting googling gifts on Christmas Day?

Elbeagle · 25/12/2019 20:02

Considering you don’t care how much it cost, you used the word ‘cheap’ 4 times in your post.

Thoughtlessinengland · 25/12/2019 20:02

AIBU to give to a charity shop?

Hi. If you’ve concluded it’s toxin-laden and likely not confirming to safety standards can you please explain why you think a charity shop should be its recipient and why another family should be exposed to it instead? Or did you not mean to write “charity shop”? Did you mean “bin” really?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/12/2019 20:03

You keep referring to "proper stores" or "unregulated stores". Where exactly do you think this toy has been sourced?

Thoughtlessinengland · 25/12/2019 20:03

It's not the cost of the gift.

I see. Why did you mention “cheap” so many times in your OP then?

Vilanelle · 25/12/2019 20:04

Toxins?

You have issues

bobstersmum · 25/12/2019 20:05

Photo or it didn't happen.

Horehound · 25/12/2019 20:06

I think some people on this thread are really uneducated in this area.
It is a concern if toys do bit meet and pass certain tests. So toxic paints etc are a hazard and should be avoided. Unfortunately places like Amazon marketplace is rife with this kind of crap.
The op has every right to be concerned and if I were you op, I'd Chuck it out.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

MySonThePotato · 25/12/2019 20:07

Meh. I wouldn't stress about it. We have a couple of imported Chinese child's toys from Amazon, mostly bought by other people. At least one says "age 3 and up" and he's nowhere near 3 yet. I just supervise my child when he's playing with them. If I'm leaving him alone in a room, I make sure he's not able to reach anything I'm not 100% confident is safe. Why not supervise your child playing with it a few times, take photos to show your in-laws so they think you're grateful for their gift, then quietly chuck it if you're still worried?

Do you have problems with anxiety generally?

It comes across as if there's a backstory here. Either you don't like FIL and his wife, or you're struggling with anxiety.

Horehound · 25/12/2019 20:07

@Vilanelle no she doesn't. She has concerns. If you think you can just use any old paint for children's toys then more fool you.

Pinkyyy · 25/12/2019 20:17

Can you show us the product of your research please. Or better still, the actual product.

littlepaddypaws · 25/12/2019 20:18

why did you feel the need to ask randoms on here when you've already decided what to do about it ?

bookmum08 · 25/12/2019 20:18

The safety aspects of some toys sold on market stalls/independent discount shops is a well known issue and trading standards release warnings every year. I would say to the gift giver that you have read some warnings about some toys this year and you want to check where was bought. Just be honest that you are concerned.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/12/2019 20:19

Age 3+ - yabu. You can supervise or save for later, or even just review it to check for small parts etc.
Concerned it's cheap looking - yabu. Your 2 year old won't be snobby about it. Some of my toddlers favourite things are very basic bits of plastic tat eg toys from crackers/party bags and what have you.

  • concerned about safety: yanbu if it's very obviously counterfeit/dubious origin (e.g. foreign non EU language packaging or none at all, broken or parts break easily, lacking safety marks eg CE, kitemarks)
Apparent concern that people with more money have bought some thing cheap: YABU. Obviously.
lisag1969 · 25/12/2019 20:20

Don't give it to anyone, as you said could be dangerous. Throw it away x

Shoxfordian · 25/12/2019 20:22

Yes it'll definitely give your child cancer
Burn it
Hmm
