To think it’s unhygienic to change bedding every six weeks?

Had this discussion with SiL. She insists we can do it fortnightly because we only have one DC (they have three), and it’s too much effort to do it more often with so many beds to change. Pillowcases do get changed weekly. She’s obsessive about cleanliness in most other domestic areas so it’s quite surprising to me...

That’s rank.
I can understand a 2 fortnight change but every 6 weeks? Yuk.

We change our bedsheets every week on sunday morning and DS’s bedsheet and sleeping bag are washed on a daily basis. He vomits and drools so we have to change often.

Ohpleasefuckofflove · 25/12/2019 06:02

I go two weeks and I have no bloody children HA!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 25/12/2019 06:09

Fortnightly.
Even in summer and we don’t shower every night because it’s a huge waste of water, no one is that dirty (and I can’t use or store so much grey water.)

(I don’t live in the UK)

Lycidas · 25/12/2019 06:09

Actually this all started by SiL asking ME how often I changed my bedding, then sharing her habits and justifying them. This is just for curiosity’s sake and it seems most people do it more frequently. But it’s certainly not a topic I’ll be pondering intellectually over the holidays...

If they’re all still alive and healthy and not stinky then what’s the problem?

Pinkbonbon · 25/12/2019 06:21

In winter if it's just me, then why not! Same for young kids maybe.

If I was sharing the bed with a guy though then I'd probably have to change them every week or so.

And in summer even though it's just me, every 2-3 weeks.

But tbh, matressess are all honkin anyway, no matter how often you change yiur sheets. And nobody fricken dies. Or smells from them.

Ariadnepersephonecloud · 25/12/2019 06:21

Yeah, don't care. Mine are washed more often but one of my children in particular hasn't presented his for washing in about two months. His bed, his issue. He seems healthy enough and doesn't smell any worse than any of his yucky teenage friends Grin.

Pinkbonbon · 25/12/2019 06:23

Did anyone see that show where they wrung out the contents of a woman's mattress infact? Water was pure black! And she was a regular sheet changer!

KatherineJaneway · 25/12/2019 06:24

6 weeks is gross. Changed weekly in Chez Janeway.

lovemenorca · 25/12/2019 06:32

* An acquaintance of mine, who likes to tell people she's "OCD about cleanliness" only changes hers every 6 weeks. Boak. Apparently because they shower every night it doesn't matter.*

Who are these odd people that have discussions with “acquaintances” about often frequently they change their bedding and shower? Confused

PlumsGalore · 25/12/2019 06:40

I do mine every week, not because I’m a mumsnetter but because I love crisp, sweet smelling sheets. I would do them more often if I had time.

I don’t iron them though, life’s too short.

NameChangeNugget · 25/12/2019 06:40

Utterly grim

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/12/2019 06:47

@JamieVardysHavingAParty
My mother had a twin tub then a washing machine when I was little. I can’t imagine without even a mangle sheets your sheets were washed frequently!

maddiemookins16mum · 25/12/2019 06:51

I feel guilty if it goes over 10 days.

Spidey66 · 25/12/2019 06:53

I'm confused, the OP says 6 weeks in her title but 2 weeks in her post.

I prefer weekly but will happily stretch to a fortnight in winter when we're not as sweaty and it's harder to dry them.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 25/12/2019 06:54

I do the sheets and top pillow cases weekly we have a sheet between the duvet and the bed and then duvet and bottom pillow cases get done every 6-8 weeks as they don't really get dirty iyswim.

StoneColdSaidSo · 25/12/2019 07:12

Nope that’s disgusting. I hot wash all bedding once a week and the dc have a bath every night before bed so it doesn’t get massively dirty. There’s 5 of us and dh and I have a super king. Kids all have their own bed. Still wouldn’t leave it more than a week though.

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 25/12/2019 07:17

6 weeks is ridiculous and dirty.

This ^

I would think the sheets would be stiff with sweet and grime. Eeeew!

FalalalalaloreanFortescue · 25/12/2019 07:31

I don't really care about the dirt, I just love clean bed day so that's every Tuesday for us and DC!

Thehop · 25/12/2019 07:35

I sometimes leave ours 2 weeks but it’s smelly by then despite daily showers. I can’t imagine 6 weeks being pleasant to climb into!

GailCindy · 25/12/2019 07:36

This is the closest to official advice:

GailCindy · 25/12/2019 07:36

It says 2 weekly at most

emmetgirl · 25/12/2019 07:40

I don't give a shit about how often other people change their sheets. I'd suggest you do the same.

Hagbeth · 25/12/2019 07:42

Once a month Grin We don’t drink or smoke so no excessive sweating (or puking). We sleep in pyjamas. If it is very warm in summer or if someone is ill I will change as needed. We only use 100% cotton bedding and a wool duvet.

ManiacalLapwing · 25/12/2019 07:42

Children, pre-teen, bathed before bed with pyjamas changed regularly? I wouldn't get upset about it. I have a 13 year old, change the bed every two or three weeks, and its still only the pillowcases that actually need it (not up to deodorant yet).
