I am dreading tomorrow because of religion!

StinkyXmasCheese · 24/12/2019 21:01

Dreading tomorrow with my family.
They are all strong in their faith Christians and I know there will be praying and thanking god etc.
I was brought up Christian but am no longer and I'm actually quite angry about religion at the moment. (Working through these issues with my counsellor.)
I know Christmas is a Christian holiday but I know I can't have a drink or I'll say something to cause an argument and I have to bite my tongue.
I've already said to dh that we're going away for Xmas next year cos I just don't want to deal with it.
I don't know how I'm going to get through the day without letting something slip!

It was one article I shared that regardless of who Ray Comfort is he has obviously made mistakes and said things i disagree with ,about doctors for example,. I have shared an article about that upthread. I think that sadly some posters are using this as an excuse to throw me off topic. Once again his comments (expect for about doctors do seem to be scriptural) I reject all forms of hatred against anyone and do not know who Ray Comfort is. @TooManyPaws for memorisation (I have an app called “verses”) I like to use the King James Version (1611). For reading I usually use the new King James Version (fully bible published -1982- according to Wikipedia) and i also sometimes listen to the esv while reading the NKJV or I have done I little reading with the ESV (English standard version- not sure of the year or anything). I hope that answers your question.

It’s not off topic at all, it’s entirely relevant to the philosophy that particular brand of Christianity sprouts. It’s anti women and our rights, anti intellectual, anti science, and anti LGBT. Asking people to ignore that element of it is quite like asking people to only focus on the good parts of nazism.

Personally, The ‘god’ being discussed here I find to be a particularly unpleasant, petty, and tyrannical one, and certainly not one I would ever find allegiance with.

SquareSausages · 27/12/2019 13:06

You don't know who he is, yet you share an article by him and expect people to convert to your religion because of it.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/12/2019 13:08

What is your view on the apocrypha?

scarecrowhead · 27/12/2019 13:13

Do you believe in evolution ?

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 13:15

@SquareSausages the article in my opinion nicely summed up the main reasons to evangelise and showed PPs that I wasn’t simply trying to “annoy” them. You are focusing in on this unnecessarily.

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 13:15

@Takethebuscuitandthesink, you’re the one missing the point. On a thread about the dangerous stupidity, literalism and intolerance of certain stripes of Christianity, you are throwing around as ‘evidence’ for the existence of God the ravings of a televangelist bigot you say you know nothing about, and quotations from the Bible, a set of texts whose history and development you know nothing about.

It doesn’t do anything to improve the image of evangelicals as credulous types with no critical thinking skills.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 13:28

@FeigningHorror I have not put out any evidence for the existence of God which is obvious as creation demands a creator in addition to many other compelling reasons. I know a small amount about the bible and there are many historical discoveries that prove the accuracy of the bible .

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 27/12/2019 13:30

@Takethebuscuitandthesink How do you decide which bits of scripture you think are right and which are wrong?

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 13:33

If it is in the bible then it is true as I believe the bible is the inspired, inerrant word of God. You can’t pick and choose.

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 27/12/2019 13:41

@Takethebuscuitandthesink I have watched your videos. It took ages. Still, I like to hear opinions that make me think. Several other people watched your videos. You have taken up quite a lot of woman-hours. So, how about you do the same? You give us some hours of your life where you read/watch what we suggest.

I think you should watch this:

Try this book too The God Delusion

ChestnutSmoothie · 27/12/2019 13:42

@Takethebiscuitandthesink

So, you’re a fan of slavery and think gay men should be stoned to death, then?

Also - a creation needs a creator, I agree. How do you know the universe is a creation?

scarecrowhead · 27/12/2019 13:44

'If it is in the Bible then it is true' - talking snakes, dust man, rib woman, rivers turning to blood, all the species of the earth on one big boat, man gets eaten by whale...... etc etc ???

Phineyj · 27/12/2019 13:47

This thread has made me massively appreciate my BIL, an evangelical vicar and his evangelical helpmeet DW. DH and I disagree with many of his views (we are not sure if SIL has any of her own) but we don't talk religion over the dinner table and neither do they.

I'm glad Christmas wasn't as bad as you were expecting and maybe 2020 is the year to get driving lessons, so you can escape future occasions when you want, OP.

Phineyj · 27/12/2019 13:49

Yes, and the interesting fact that Matthew, Mark, Luke and John describe the same events from different points of view and with some quite important differences/omissions.

scarecrowhead · 27/12/2019 13:53

You keep posting the same video claiming to prove the bible is true so here's a bit of info on the counter argument

ChestnutSmoothie · 27/12/2019 13:56

“Different points of view”?

No.

Matthew copied Mark & added his own bits. Luke copied Mark & Matthew and added, omitted, rewrote his own bits. John took magic mushrooms.

They were evolving the religion, not attempting a true account of anything.

None of the gospel writers ever met each other or any of the people they talk about - or any person who ever met any of the people they talk about. It’s fiction.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 13:57

@ChestnutSmoothie due to its highly designed nature and also we know that the universe had a beginning. It would break the law of cause and effect to suggest that the universe just spontaneously created itself...

scarecrowhead · 27/12/2019 14:01

But God doesn't need a cause ?

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 14:06

@ChestnutSmoothie the bible is the inspired word of The Lord so it is irrelevant if any of the human writers ever met each other.

NeedAnExpert · 27/12/2019 14:07

Personally, The ‘god’ being discussed here I find to be a particularly unpleasant, petty, and tyrannical one, and certainly not one I would ever find allegiance with.

Or, in the words of the fabulous Tim Minchin:

“a sexist, racist, murderous cunt”

Please scroll upthread I have posted a video about this or I can copy and paste it here?

NeedAnExpert · 27/12/2019 14:08

the bible is the inspired word of The Lord

How do you know that?

NeedAnExpert · 27/12/2019 14:09

It would break the law of cause and effect to suggest that the universe just spontaneously created itself...

It wouldn’t, actually. Get watching someBrian Cox.
